As an effective means of multi-agent problem solving, autonomous individual programming and interaction that are essential need, are limited in their ability to accommodate the interests of others, and therefore, may unnecessarily constrain the solving ability and negotiability of an agent, particularly in a distributed cooperative environments founded on private and uncertain information. In this paper, a multi-agent group programming model is presented, where each agent executes local programming by evolutionary search. Based on co-evolution idea, agents resolve conflicts and revise their own search direction to optimize local and social objectives in an interactive process by means of clustering and group choice. Finally, the paper presents simulation results that illustrate the operational effectiveness of our agent group programming model.

This paper focuses on a supporting strategy for enhancing distributed and computer-mediated group programming learning. Based on a real-world research setting that started two decades ago, we have exploited a particular context characterized by: (i) a close analysis of artifacts produced by learners;(ii) a collaborative approach to learning, combined with (iii) a team-based approach to programming;and (iv) the use of a Progressive Learning Scheme for group programming learning. These elements are discussed as rationale for the analysis and representation of forum-based discussion logs generated within a case study carried out with first year undergraduate computing students. This analysis allowed us to develop a means of coordinating group programming on a distributed, agent-based platform using group programming stereotypes from conversation analysis. These stereotypes were defined using interaction patterns within a process calculus.

The technical literature in cognitive science informs that working in groups reaps more benefits than working alone. We are seeing a variety of innovative group programming methodologies like the agile methods. This work examines the findings of a pilot study carried out during the first academic semester of 2007. The subjects were 110 freshmen computing and engineering students taking their first programming course at the Federal University of Amazonas. Based on these findings, it is proposed a programming progression learning scheme, from individual (current practice) to group programming (the desired practice based on the literature review). Such transition is necessary for students are not used to programming in groups. In order to evaluate such progression learning scheme a case study is outlined.

Over the last decade, there has been a steady stream of pair programming studies. However, one significant area of pair programming that has not received its due attention is gender. Considering the fact that pair programming is one of the major human-centric software development paradigms, this is a gap that needs to be addressed. This empirical study conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of different gender pair combinations within pair programming context. Using a pool of university programming course students as the experiment participants, the study examined three gender pair types: female-female, female-male, and male-male. The result revealed that there was no significant gender difference in the pair programming coding output. But there were significant differences in the levels of pair compatibility and communication between the same gender pair type: female-female and male-male, and the mixed gender pair type, female-male. The post-experiment comments provide additional insights and details about gender in pair interactions.

We investigated the impact of assigning specific roles in Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) activities versus giving the same group activities without pre-assigned roles. We hoped to show that the group with additional structure would receive tangible benefits: more engagement with partners, greater comprehension of material, heightened content interest, and increased retention. Preliminary results suggest that the proportion of minimally participating students was not statistically significantly different, and neither were the individual assessments. The roled section did have higher scores overall in the course, both in the group activities and also in the final exam;however, the difference was small and not clearly statistically significant. Unexpectedly, disciplinary actions and post course surveys indicate a greater rate of plagiarism on both shared lab reports and individual homework assignments in the free-form group and this may be a factor for instructors to bear in mind when utilizing group activities.

Joint Visual Attention (JVA) has long been considered a critical component of successful collaborations, enabling coordination and construction of a shared knowledge space. However, recent studies challenge the notion that JVA alone ensures effective collaboration. To gain deeper insights into JVA's influence, we examine nonlinear gaze coupling and gaze regularity in the collaborators' visual attention. Specifically, we analyze gaze data from 19 dyadic and triadic teams engaged in a co-located programming task using Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA). Our results emphasize the significance of team-level gaze regularity for improving task performance - highlighting the importance of maintaining stable or sustained episodes of joint or individual attention, than disjointed patterns. Additionally, through regression analyses, we examine the predictive capacity of recurrence metrics for subjective traits such as social cohesion and social loafing, revealing unique interpersonal and team dynamics behind productive collaborations. We elaborate on our findings via qualitative anecdotes and discuss their implications in shaping real-time interventions for optimizing collaborative success.

Project Girls Owning Their Lives and Dreams (GOLD) is a comprehensive group counseling program providing psychoeducational, growth, support, and counseling groups to adolescent victims of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE). groups were facilitated by staff and community volunteers. Online surveys were administered to participants to gain their perceptions of the groups. Participants were generally satisfied with the groups and reported themes of bonding with peers, learning new skills, empowerment, and stress relief. Considerations for group work with this population are provided.

This study reports findings of the gender differences within a pair programming context. A large pool of university computer programming course undergraduate and graduate students was paired into three distinct pair categories: male-male, male-female, and female-female. All pairs performed pair programming tasks under a controlled lab environment. The pairs' final outputs in the categories of code productivity and code design were quantitatively measured, and the post-experiment questionnaire was also measured. The results revealed that the male-male pairs had the highest scores and female-female pairs had the lowest scores in both code categories, but not significantly. In the post-experiment questionnaire, the communication and compatibility levels showed significant differences between the three different pair categories. The male-male, female-female pairs or same gender pairs had significantly higher levels than the male-female or mixed gender pairs. Additionally, the female participants particularly voiced gender-biased concerns about collaborating with male partners in doing the pair programming task.
