A long-term-based handover decision algorithm for dense macro-femto coexistence networks

For the dense macro-femto coexistence networks scenario, a long-term-based handover（LTBH） algorithm is proposed. The handover decision algorithm is jointly determined by the angle of handover（AHO） and the time-tostay（TTS） to reduce the unnecessary handover ***, the proposed AHO parameter is used to decrease the computation complexity in multiple candidate base stations（CBSs） scenario. Then, two types of TTS parameters are given for the fixed base stations and mobile base stations to make handover decisions among multiple CBSs. The simulation results show that the proposed LTBH algorithm can not only maintain the required transmission rate of users, but also effectively reduce the unnecessary numbers of handover in the dense macro-femto networks with the coexisting mobile BSs.

A CQI and Hysteretic-Based decision algorithm to Prevent handover Failures for Pedestrian Mobility in Mobile Communication HetNet

In current mobile communication networks, handover substantially influences the performance of heterogeneous networks (HetNet). The decision process and trigger timing of the handover decision algorithm (HDA) are integral aspects of handover and are indispensable for mobile user equipment (UE). However, the major A3RSRP (reference signal received power) HDA with the parameter of handover margin (HOM) used in co-frequency environments has poor performance with low-speed pedestrian scenarios in HetNet, including high handover failure (HoF) ratio, frequent handover (FHO), and high number of HoFs. In this paper, we focus on reducing the HoF ratio and propose a novel CQI and hysteretic (CH)-based HDA using downlink channel quality indicator (CQI) and hysteretic control (HC). This novel HDA enables the cell to check the downlink CQI of the UE during HDA, thereby correctly determining the trigger timing of the handover. Moreover, the cell can use the HC to dynamically adjust the HOM based on the CQI of the UE to adapt the handover to the HetNet environment. We evaluate and compare the performance of the CH and A3RSRP HDAs in three scenarios with different speeds, each with multiple HOM settings. The ns-3 simulation results indicate that the CH HDA shows a maximum improvement of 100% in HoF ratio and 5% and 100% in the number of handovers and HoFs, respectively, in the small-scale environment with a speed of 0.5 m/s and an initial HOM of 2.0 dB, while the CH HDA shows a minimum improvement of -4% in HoF ratio and 58% and 44% improvement in the number of handover and HoFs, respectively, in the large-scale environment with a speed of 0.5 m/s and an initial HOM of 3.0 dB, compared with the A3RSRP HDA.

As wireless communications evolve towards heterogeneous networks, mobile terminals have been enabled to handover seamlessly from one network to another. At the same time, the continuous increase in the terminal power consumption has resulted in an ever-decreasing battery lifetime. To that end, the network selection is expected to play a key role on how to minimize the energy consumption, and thus to extend the terminal lifetime. Hitherto, terminals select the network that provides the highest received power. However, it has been proved that this solution does not provide the highest energy efficiency. Thus, this paper proposes an energy efficient vertical handover algorithm that selects the most energy efficient network that minimizes the uplink power consumption. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through extensive simulations and it is shown to achieve high energy efficiency gains compared to the conventional approach.

This paper studies the handover decision problem in multi-cell networks and proposes a handover decision algorithm, which jointly uses location information and the network load to decrease handover numbers and maintain user's quality of service (QoS). With the help of GPS, it is feasible to obtain location records of each user in recent times. The user's next movement direction angle can be calculated and used to assist the handover decision. However, because of the limited resources in one cell, the QoS of users in this cell cannot be satisfied if more and more users move to a cell, the load balancing problem should also be considered in order to guarantee QoS requirements of each user. In this paper, two parameters, in terms of angle of handover (AHO) index and load balance index, are jointly taken into account for decreasing handover numbers with the network load balancing. System simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the numbers of handover and increase the load balance index simultaneously.

Hierarchical macro/femto-cell networks are considered a promising technology to increase overall network coverage and bandwidth at a relatively low cost. In these emerging networks, a large number of femtocells are deployed within a macrocell. When a macrocell includes many femtocells, the number of handovers greatly increases because handover from the macrocell to the femtocell is executed frequently. However, frequent handovers increase overhead due to handover management as well as latency due to handover interruption. In this paper, we propose an efficient handover decision algorithm based on available data volume to reduce the unnecessary handovers and increase the throughput. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively reduces the number of unnecessary handovers while improving the throughput compared to a conventional RSS based algorithm.

Drones have attracted extensive attention for their environmental, civil, and military applications. Because of their low cost and flexibility in deployment, drones with communication capabilities are expected to play key important roles in Fifth Generation (5G), Sixth Generation (6G) mobile networks, and beyond. 6G and 5G are intended to be a full-coverage network capable of providing ubiquitous connections for space, air, ground, and underwater applications. Drones can provide airborne communication in a variety of cases, including as Aerial Base Stations (ABSs) for ground users, relays to link isolated nodes, and mobile users in wireless networks. However, variables such as the drone's free-space propagation behavior at high altitudes and its exposure to antenna sidelobes can contribute to radio environment alterations. These differences may render existing mobility models and techniques as inefficient for connected drone applications. Therefore, drone connections may experience significant issues due to limited power, packet loss, high network congestion, and/or high movement speeds. More issues, such as frequent handovers, may emerge due to erroneous transmissions from limited coverage areas in drone networks. Therefore, the deployments of drones in future mobile networks, including 5G and 6G networks, will face a critical technical issue related to mobility and handover processes due to the main differences in drones' characterizations. Therefore, drone networks require more efficient mobility and handover techniques to continuously maintain stable and reliable connection. More advanced mobility techniques and system reconfiguration are essential, in addition to an alternative framework to handle data transmission. The increasing demand for mobile communication calls for improvements to network operating services in terms of capacity, coverage, and Quality of Services (QoS). Ensuring QoS is one of the challenges faced by wireless network operators, which include the provision of high mobility speeds, thus the implementation of a seamless and fast handover between network cells is a prominent issue that must be addressed, especially when fulfilling QoS prerequisites. Long Term Evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advance has met these demands of QoS through the use of a new Radio Access Network and distribution of Radio Resource Management including the handover decision technique to evolve NodeB instead of relying on centralized control. In this paper, we review the control plane structure of LTE/LTE-A and present a comprehensive discussion of handover procedures such as the phases, techniques, requirements, features, and challenges involved. According to the overview of the handover decision phase, we surveyed and classified the present handover decision algorithms for a LTE-A system-based technology in regard to the primary handover decision technique. For each class, we describe in detail the fundamental operations and decision parameters using representative algorithms. A summary of input parameters, techniques, and performance evaluation of the handover decision algorithms concludes this work.

This paper presents a novel energy efficient and delay aware handover decision policy based on Markov decision process (MDP) for a two-tier (macro-femto) wireless network. We propose a novel reward function and formulate a novel transition probability matrix to be used in MDP in order to take optimal handover decision. Simulation results reveal that, compared to other competitive handover policies, the proposed policy can significantly reduce the power consumption as well as handover delay at the mobile terminals.

To reduce the number of unnecessary handover in hierarchical macro/femto-cell networks, it is necessary to avoid macro -> femto cell handovers of temporary femtocell visitors who stay in the femtocell for a relatively short time. In this paper, we propose a smart handover decision algorithm exploiting future mobility pattern prediction scheme to prevent macro. femto cell handovers of such temporary femtocell visitors. Our simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm effectively reduces the number of unnecessary handovers.

Mobility Management for Femtocells in LTE-Advanced: Key Aspects and Survey of handover decision algorithms

Support of femtocells is an integral part of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) system and a key enabler for its wide adoption in a broad scale. Femtocells are short-range, low-power and low-cost cellular stations which are installed by the consumers in an unplanned manner. Even though current literature includes various studies towards understanding the main challenges of interference management in the presence of femtocells, little light has been shed on the open issues of mobility management (MM) in the two-tier macrocell-femtocell network. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive discussion on the key aspects and research challenges of MM support in the presence of femtocells, with the emphasis given on the phases of a) cell identification, b) access control, c) cell search, d) cell selection/reselection, e) handover (HO) decision, and f) HO execution. A detailed overview of the respective MM procedures in the LTE-A system is also provided to better comprehend the solutions and open issues posed in real-life systems. Based on the discussion for the HO decision phase, we subsequently survey and classify existing HO decision algorithms for the two-tier macrocell-femtocell network, depending on the primary HO decision criterion used. For each class, we overview up to three representative algorithms and provide detailed flowcharts to describe their fundamental operation. A comparative summary of the main decision parameters and key features of selected HO decision algorithms concludes this work, providing insights for future algorithmic design and standardization activities.
