Recently, with issues such as global warming, melting of glaciers and climate change, the need for sus-tainable methods of living has seen a drastic increase. Combustion cars that run on petrol and diesel are slowly being replaced with electrical vehicles (EVs). Currently, EVs face challenges in terms of range of kilometers offered, availability of charging systems, infrastructure for their development, etc. As the need for electrical vehicles increase, the usages of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) too have seen a growing trend. Motor control in an electrical vehicle is extremely crucial as a vehicle on road is subject to different terrains and hence, different loads. Throughout all these different scenarios, it is essential that the motor operates at its optimum efficiency in order to provide optimum vehicle perfor-mance for the driver and passengers. Currently, several methods are available for the control of electrical vehicles, nevertheless the field-oriented control (FOC) method for permanent magnet motors is widely used due to its efficient nature. This paper discusses with the design of modified FOC control algorithm for control the PMSM motor eliminates an initial jerk seen during the starting condition of a motor thereby providing a smoother start. As the entire simulation is done using hardware in the loop model, the values obtained have real life constraints taken into account, as opposed to a software only simula-tion. Moreover, the transient time taken to reach a steady state value in speed and to also change direc-tion of rotation have been improved as well. This study focuses on an integrated software and hardware platform that is capable of performing (real-time/nonreal- time) hardware-in-the-loop simulation of dynamic systems, including electrical machinery, CNC machine tools. In this approach, once the dynamics of the plant to be controlled is defined via C++ language, the resulting code is cross-compiled automatically on a PC. Executable files along with the necessary drivers are downloaded onto the composite hardware platform that consists of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) along with a powerful DSP board. The paper elaborates the overall performance of this novel hybrid HILS platform on a CNC machine tool application.

In this paper the operation and control of battery-less hybrid systems for off-grid power supply is investigated. The load demand of the system is covered by a diesel-driven generator (DDG) and photovoltaic (PV) arrays. First, an overview of the features and operation of such systems is provided. Primary control of the system is investigated where the PV inverter curtails its active power in order to respect the minimum load ratio of the DDG and contribute to frequency control. Secondary control of the system is applied using the hardware in the loop (HIL) technique, where parts of the real-time simulation are replaced with actual physical components. hardware controllable loads are activated by a hardware controller in order to respect the minimum load ratio of the DDG. An alternative method is applied where instead of controllable loads a hardware PV inverter curtails its active power production. The HIL simulation results show that both methods are effective to reduce the frequency deviation of the system and maintain the power output of the DDG above the predefined minimum requirement. The tests were performed with a combination of Controller HIL and Power HIL simulation leading to more realistic testing than Controller HIL simulation or pure digital simulation.

hardware in the loop simulation(HILS) plays an increasingly important role in the development and test system of missile. This paper describes the structure and function of a typical HILS Platform for missile testing. The platform has a double computers structure, which consists of the control computer and the simulation computer. The paper analyses the hardware and software requirements and gives the simulation workflow chart. Accuracy of the timer is one of the key techniques in the hardware in the loop simulation. Because of the poor real-time performance of Windows system, RTX HAL extension Subsystem is introduced to meet the real-time requirement of the system. This paper also studies the realization of accurate clock in the RTX, introduces the general process of driver development. The results of simulation experiments indicate that the platform has good real-time performance and runs stably and reliably. The flight data do not miss or mismatch in the whole simulation process. The platform fully satisfies the real-time requirements of hardware in the loop simulation for missile guidance and control system.

As the application of UAVs is expanded to various industrial fields such as agriculture, leisure, and military, the demand for the development of intelligent UAVs that carry out complex missions is expected to increase continuously. However, the following challenges exist for intelligent UAV software development. First, mechanical engineering tasks are essential before developing advanced cognitive algorithms of intelligent UAVs. Second, intelligent UAVs require reliable verification methods. Third, the real world is affected by the weather, making it difficult to test them. In this paper, we propose an XR twin based intelligent UAV software development environment to mitigate these problems. The development environment allows SW engineers to build the advanced cognitive algorithms without mechanical engineering knowledges. In addition, we provide SW/HW conformance verification by integrating real UAVS with the virtual development environment. It supports immersive methods with the advanced cognitive algorithms by utilizing a kind of XR interaction devices as well.

Hypersonic vehicles are maturing, and are now considered for air-breathing access to space, high speed transport, and gliding planetary entry. Model predictive control (MPC) can allow these vehicles to accurately track precomputed flight trajectories while respecting aero-thermal loading, structural loading, and actuation constraints. However, hypersonic aerodynamics are fundamentally complex, resulting in unavoidable discrepancies between the models used for control and real flight aerodynamics. simulation studies indicate that MPC shows promise despite these modelling challenges, but few experimental studies have been performed. This paper proposes an MPC scheme for a hypersonic wing-flap system (representative of a hypersonic vehicle's inner control loop) that is used in experimental campaigns. Control is implemented via online relinearization of an analytical low-order aerodynamics model. The performance of the controller is analyzed via hardware in the loop simulations using a truth model which is calibrated to computational fluid dynamics results. Results indicate good closed-loop performance even in the presence of model error, highlighting the applicability of MPC for inner-loop control of hypersonic vehicles, and demonstrating the readiness of the proposed controller for experimental testing.

We developed a characteristic identification system for devices of railway vehicles which is an essential component in a system of 'Virtual Running Test Environment' based on hardware in the loop simulation (HILS) technology, as developed by Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) to replace running tests with bench tests. This report describes the outline and the effect of the characteristic identification system for oil dampers using a Neural Network (NN), which estimates input-output relation of the target in 6 degree-of-freedom using multi-axis damper test equipment.

As Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) become more integrated into everyday life, the security of these systems must also be considered during their development due to their ever increasing importance. With the increase of physical components in the system, more autonomous control requirements, and increased dependence on proper functionality, verifying system safety and correct operation becomes increasingly difficult. CPS have become more complex through the combination of additional hardware and more interconnected software resulting in many different layers, each one requiring individual security solutions. One example of such a safety-critical CPS embedded system is the Flight Control System (FCS) of an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). An FCS consists of many complex sensors that provide aircraft state information to a central processor, the autopilot, which executes the programmed flight control firmware. Developers of an FCS are dependent on a varying supply chain for the sensors and processors in use, and the trusted delivery of their verified firmware updates to the end user cannot always be guaranteed. Over time, sensor data can become less reliable as sensors can deteriorate resulting in eventual failure. These factors lead to system vulnerabilities from various types of cyber-attacks and physical faults of the sensors on a UAS. Statistical techniques are analyzed for their effectiveness in detecting when specified sensor values begin to exhibit a variance from other trusted sources. A real-time functional run-time assurance architecture and associated detection techniques has been developed to detect such cyber-attacks and sensor data faults in a UAS FCS. The results are demonstrated using an FPGA-based hardware-in-the-loop simulation testbed for simulating attacks and the attack detection algorithms to provide the user with information regarding these sensor attacks.

Vacuum altitude simulator (VAS) is the key component of the hardware in the loop simulation (HMS) of the aircraft control system. Due to the compressibility of the air and the nonlinearity of the exhaust capacity of the vacuum pump, it is difficult to get a good performance with normal linear controller. In this paper, the nonlinear mathematical model of the system is established. A feedback linearization controller is developed based on the model. To handle the uncertain nonlinear dynamics, the integral control is introduced. Experiments indicate that the proposed controller can effectively improve the stability and the dynamic response of the system.

This paper focuses on developing a universal hardware-in-the-loop simulation workplace which is used in education and research in the field of mechatronic systems modelling and control. The workplace concept is based on generally available and employed hardware (Programmable Logic Controller) and software means (MATLAB), configured to enable work on practically any type of both continuous and discrete system. The technological equipment of the workplace can be further expanded for work on larger MIMO systems found in real technological practice. The workplace is mainly being used for solving tasks related to electric drives, mechatronics, robotics and technological plant control. A case study involving a DC motor drive control is included in the paper.
