Double anti-roll bar hardware-in-loop experiment for active anti-roll control system

Active anti-roll bar (AARB) is a cheaper alternative for a fully active suspension system, which can be adapted into passenger cars, made possible by today's technology. AARB minimizes body roll and improve ride comfort. In this paper, the design of a hardware-in-loop (HIL) test bench is presented. The HIL test bench is able to test dual AARB system, each for front and rear of a car respectively. HIL testing will allow designer to analyze and validate the performance of the proposed AARB system before it could be implemented in a real car. This paper focuses on the practicality and adaptability of implementing Fuzzy based PID controllers into the AARB system. HIL experiment compares the performance of proposed Self-Tuning Fuzzy PI-PD (STF PI-PD) controller against the PI-PD Type Fuzzy Logic Controller (PI-PD Type FLC) and Self-Tuning Fuzzy PID (STF PID) controllers. STF PID controller was proposed by previous researchers for an AARB system. Experimental results suggest that the proposed AARB system, which incorporates STF PI-PD controller is able to reduce 87.68 % of roll angle and 50.04 % in roll rate in average, thus improving the vehicle dynamics. STF PI-PD controller significantly outperforms both STF PID and PI-PD Type FLC controllers in various handling tests.

In the past five years, the importance of peer-to-peer (P2P) trading for promoting the use of renewable energy has been demonstrated in many scientific literature and pilot projects. However, a large-scale demonstration of P2P trading in today's electricity market is yet to be implemented. The reason for this can be partially attributed to two factors. First, most existing pilot projects focus on the aspects of communications between different participants and settlements of energy trading parameters between them without giving considerable attention to the impact of such trading on the distribution network. Second, scientific studies that have rigorously investigated the impact on distribution networks mostly validated their frameworks using numerical simulations without substantiating the findings through hardware implementation. In this paper, this gap is addressed by proposing a ready-to-implement canonical coalition game-based P2P energy trading scheme for electricity customers within a local distribution network. It is shown that the proposed scheme not only guarantees stable and fair outcomes for all participants, but also satisfies all mandatory power network constraints during the trading process. Importantly, the proposed framework is implemented in an RSCAD-RTDS (real-time digital simulator) platform and the readiness of the scheme for a real-field trial is demonstrated through validation in software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop setups. The usefulness and suitability of the proposed scheme to be implemented in today's electricity network are established via both software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop case studies.

hardware-in-loop (HiL) methodology is well established in the automotive industry. One typical application is the development and validation of control algorithms for drive systems by simulating the vehicle plus the vehicle environment in combination with specific control hardware as the HiL component. This paper introduces the use of a fuel cell HiL methodology for fuel cell and fuel cell system design and evaluation-where the fuel cell (or stack) is the unique HiL component that requires evaluation and development within the context of a fuel cell system designed for a specific application (e.g., a fuel cell vehicle) in a typical use pattern (e.g., a standard drive cycle). Initial experimental results are presented for the example of a fuel cell within a fuel cell vehicle simulation under a dynamic drive cycle. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Online Estimation of Peak Power Capability of Li-Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles by a hardware-in-loop Approach

Battery peak power capability estimations play an important theoretical role for the proper use of the battery in electric vehicles. To address the failures in relaxation effects and real-time ability performance, neglecting the battery's design limits and other issues of the traditional peak power capability calculation methods, a new approach based on the dynamic electrochemical-polarization (EP) battery model, taking into consideration constraints of current, voltage, state of charge (SoC) and power is proposed. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system is built for validating the online model-based peak power capability estimation approach of batteries used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and a HIL test based on the Federal Urban Driving Schedules (FUDS) is used to verify and evaluate its real-time computation performance, reliability and robustness. The results show the proposed approach gives a more accurate estimate compared with the hybrid pulse power characterization (HPPC) method, avoiding over-charging or over-discharging and providing a powerful guarantee for the optimization of HEVs power systems. Furthermore, the HIL test provides valuable data and critical guidance to evaluate the accuracy of the developed battery algorithms.

Due to rapid growth in distributed energy production maintaining grid stability and reliability is ever more challenging. International connection standards and national grid codes continue to become increasingly demanding, especially regarding grid support functionalities. Hence, the need for testing increases and as a result, the cost of product development increases. Use of simulation technologies both in product development and certification provides means to lower these costs. hardware-in-loop (HIL) is a simulation method where a part of the physical system is simulated, and a part is the actual system. This work introduces a HIL simulation setup built for a utility scale solar inverter and provides a look at some of the most important grid interconnection regulations with the aim of justifying the use of simulations in the certification processes. Tests suitable for HIL testing were selected and test results from the HIL simulator were compared with laboratory test results. The attained simulator test results correspond well with laboratory results verifying the HIL sim- ulator functionality and validating the created simulation models. The results show, that in many cases using a HIL simulator is a viable alternative for full power labo- ratory testing and that a validated HIL simulator could be used for certification testing.

A rapid R&D Process is produced in eddy current detection using hardware-in-loop simulation. Inspired by software and hardware concurrent exploitation method in software engineering, we explore a new top-down design method in Proteus environments. Data acquisition and data-out devices which can work in Proteus environments are designed, including the digital filter and coherent detection procedures for eddy current detection. By putting the spiral development of software engineering into the design process of the hardware projects, which uses Proteus as a system prototype development platform, unifies the gap between field experiment and the software simulation by using hardware-in- loop method and accelerates design schedule. In this way, rapid eddy current detection prototyping can be designed very soon, and it is useful for system-level devices design in eddy current detection. The practice proves that this method can greatly shorten the product development cycle and reduce development cost for system-level devices design in eddy current detection.

This paper deals with a photovoltaic (PV) array fed three-phase seven-level converter grid-tied configuration. The proposed system integrates PV array side to AC grid using minimum DC sources and single-phase transformers. The decoupled controller of the system exhibits active and reactive current controllers with coupling compensation network. A low-frequency switching is implemented using carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. The system inherits the advantages of simple controller, single DC source and galvanic isolation. A model of the system is developed and its behavior is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and validated in real-time using hardware in loop (HIL) platform using OPAL-RT.

Simulation systems with hardware-in-loop are composed by three-Axis virtual flight motion simulator, simulation computer, load torque simulator, and visual simulation systems. Three-Axis Virtual Flight Motion Simulator are used to simulate the attitude of missile in simulation system with hardware-in-loop, so its performance influenced the result of simulation directly. This paper mainly analyzed the factors which influenced the performance of a three-Axis virtual flight motion simulator which we are used now in the lab, then analyzed the entire simulation system's error caused by these factors through numerical simulation method. By analysis we can see that bandwidth is the main factor influenced the precision of simulation systems with hardware-in-loop, mechanical device installation error and measurement error may also cause some errors of the systems at the same time.

Control model of THIPWM for five and seven level inverter incorporating Phase shifted and level shifted carrier signals are generated using Xilinx system generator(XSG) platform in Matlab/*** time hardware co-simulation is performed by modelling CHBMLI system in Matlab/simulink and hardware co-simulation is performed using Zedboard Zynq development and evaluation FPGA kit.

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) as a new topology has been widely used in the field of the high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) and flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS). This paper established a MMC hardware-in-loop (MMC-HIL) Platform based on RT-LAB. This platform contains a monitor computer, the OP5600 object machine, a modular multilevel converter, digital and analog interfaces and the protection system. Design principles and implementation schemes for the proposed platform are all introduced. And the control strategy for MMC is also analyzed in this paper, including stratified balance control strategy of sub-module capacitor voltage and circulating current suppressing control strategy based on proportional resonant (PR) regulator. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. They show that this MMC-HIL platform based on RT-LAB provides a convenient way for control strategy developing.
