Modular multilevel converters (MMC) are used in the applications such as medium voltage multi-megawatt drives and in HVDC power transmission. The converter has several sub-modules connected in series that are switched appropriately to regulate the pole voltage. Besides regulation of output voltage, it is also essential to regulate the individual sub-module capacitor voltages. In this paper, a novel modulation scheme for an MMC converter based on carrier phase shifted PWM is proposed. The proposed modulation scheme balances the sub-module capacitor voltages without distortions in output voltage. The scheme combines the best features of the two well-known modulation approaches, namely, carrier-based modulation approach and sub-module insertion approach. Real-time simulation results modeling a single leg MMC converter using a Typhoon HIL system are presented to validate the performance of the proposed modulation scheme.

The nano-positioning system with long stroke is the key component of the micrometer and nanometer manufacturing and measurement devices, such as atomic force microscope (AFM), laser direct writing, nano-machining, lithography etc. In this paper a novel linear magnet-driven actuator is proposed. The Halbach magnetic array with air bearings is adopted as the mover. The winding of stator is ironless structure. The actuator has a nanometer scale positioning resolution. The designed stroke is 50 millimeter. The high-accuracy optical incremental encoder and subdividing system are employed to measure the motion of the mover, facilitating real-time feedback control. The hardware-in-loop simulation system of the actuator is set up based on XPC-target module in Matlab/Simulink toolbox. The parameter identification and Simulink control model of the actuator are implemented. Finally, the trial test and analysis are carried out. The results show the presented actuator could be operated with the positioning resolution of 9.5 nm root mean square (RMS).

The system of connected vehicles can be considered as a complicated cyber-physical system, which will be fully provided with the ability of cooperative awareness, adaptive communication and collaborative control in future intelligent transportation systems. It is now imminent to consider how to construct a set of comprehensive evaluation system so that the key technology of connected vehicles can be effectively tested and verified. In this contribution a lightweight testbed framework for connected vehicles was proposed based on the cyber-physical fusion and hardware-in-loop simulation technology. Miniature vehicles were developed as the physical prototype equipped with Arduino microprocessor, ZigBee radio module and other sensing elements. Some typical cooperative scenarios can be evaluated using the miniature vehicles under indoor laboratory environments. Through collaborative information interaction between physical layer and top layer, the synchronized simulation measurement can be realized in a virtual scenario of connected vehicles. Owing to the coordination between physical nodes and simulated ones, the testbed will be possessed of flexibility, scalability and practicability. Some experimental results presented in this contribution indicate the proposed testbed is feasible and reasonable. This research is beneficial to develop more intelligent connected vehicles in the near future.

This paper develops a hardware-in-loop simulation test bench to simulate an actual battery embedded in a type 1 wind generation system. This provides an opportunity for studying batteries under realistic charge/discharge profiles as they undergo such stress cycles in a wind application. A Shepherd battery model is developed for two battery chemistries and is compared to real batteries in the loop of the real-time simulation. The outcome of this study is to show the difference in the final value of the state of charge of the batteries in a purely mathematical simulation using a battery model and in the real-time battery-in-loop simulation.

The linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control law is designed for the stabilization of the three Euler angles of a helicopter. The digital closed-loop simulation is conducted with the helicopter model, the actuator models and the designed controller in loop. The robust controller is programmed into a real-time software which is downloaded into the Flight Control Computer. The hardware-in-loop simulation is performed to show the effectiveness of the controller.

Aiming at the development of ESP system, hardware-in-loop simulation (HILS) method based on virtual integrated technology, which combines virtual model by ADAMS/Car, virtual controller by Simulink, and LabVIEW platform, is introduced. The principle of the HILS method is explained. The structure and relation among parts of the HILS system based on virtual integrated technology are discussed, and the HILS system for ESP is developed. Experiments on this system are performed and the results are analyzed and compared.

It has been shown that high seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) air conditioner compressor motors will stall during a voltage sag of 30 % or greater such as during a sub-transmission fault. When these motors stall, they draw two to three times their rated current and reactive power. The motor stall affects the entire power system beyond the duration of voltage drop of the fault resulting in a system-wide impact. This phenomenon is known as fault induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) or slow voltage recovery (SVR). The FIDVR or SVR event is not only influenced by the air conditioner motor penetration but also by the voltage sensitivity of the load composition in the distribution system. In this study, the single-phase induction machine model that is available in the real time digital simulator (RTDS) is used to simulate the stall nature of these high SEER machines. This paper also addresses the effect of distribution system loads on FIDVR and analyzes the effect using RTDS. A group of the machine models are installed in a test power system along with constant impedance (Z), constant current (I), and constant power (P) load models to study the effect of these loads on the stall nature of the single phase induction machines.

Now most of the hybrid vehicle control strategies are aiming at the optimal fuel economy and driving cycle must be pre-known. Changing driving condition will influence the optimal results greatly. Therefore, a neural network controller (NNC) is proposed, which can improve fuel efficiency and the battery's SOC of a dual-mode hybrid vehicle in most driving conditions. The controller is trained through genetic algorithm to optimize the weights of the network. By using different driving cycle in the NNC training, this controller can be well functioned in variety conditions. The proposed NNC is testified through the hardware-in-loop simulation.

According to the blank of construction machine controller and its development platform for variety applications in Chinese construction machine industry,this paper presents a novel, open source,low cost hardware-in-loop simulation platform for the application development of the general construction machine controller(GCMC) implemented by author's *** platform consists of three *** is the construction machine controller with complete intellectual properties, the second part is the signal converter which transfers the status signals from the numeric controlled model(NCM) running on the PC to the GCMC,and transfers the control signals from GCMC to NCM,makes the whole system close *** third part is the software platform programmed by Matlab,which runs the NCM by calling dynamic linked library method and provides the post processing by using virtual reality toolbox of Matlab,this software is open *** the end of this paper,a virtual reality demonstration of the controller development for the crawler dozer hydraulic drive system is presented.
