In recent years, cyber-physical system (CPS) applications have been extensively utilised in the electric power grid to enable wide-area protection, control, and monitoring of power systems. Many of these applications in a smart grid CPS depend on reliable time synchronisation. For example, synchrophasor data from geographically distributed phasor measurement units (PMU) utilise global positioning system (GPS) for precise timing. However, these units are exposed to GPS time spoofing attacks that can lead to inaccurate monitoring and trigger unnecessary, and possibly destabilising, remedial control actions. The authors develop an end-to-end case study demonstrating the effect of GPS spoofing attacks on the phase angle monitoring and control functions of a PMU-based load shedding scheme. The evaluation of authors attack strategy is performed in a hardware-in-the-loop real-time digital simulator-enabled power system testbed.

The dual active full bridge (DAFB) is one of the promising isolated DC/DC converter topologies that will play a significant role in the future of electric vehicle (EV) integration in smart grids (SGs). This is due to its inherent soft switching and control simplicity. Therefore, this study presents first the latest developments related to the design of DAFB converter in EV charging technology. It provides a brief discussion of the crucial recommendations regarding the reliability, efficiency, system configuration, EV charger control scheme, battery lifetime, and system materials. Then, it presents a step-by-step modelling approach for a non-ideal DAFB for the purpose of designing its controller. In addition, the model provided by this study includes all non-idealities due to the high-frequency (HF) transformer, semiconductor switches, passive components, and digital system delays. Eventually, the proposed system design and analysis was validated by implementing a 6.1 kW prototype on Simulink and Typhoon-HIL real-time simulator.

Micro-grid is sub-unit of a smart grid consisting of a complex power electronics, energy storage systems and several generating sources distributed throughout the network. Real-time based simulations of Micro-grid (MG) demands large computational resources. This research presents MG system that utilizes a field programmable gate array (FPGA, NI PXIe-7976R) module where real-time simulations, communication, and analysis is performed to determine the behavior of the MG system. Also, the data acquisition using NI CompactDAQ cards with the integration of the LabView program is used to determine MG output signals as a power quality analyzer. The three-phase output signals are then modified to emulate real-time MG scenario using Regatron (TC ACS). Further, the AC variable loads such as resistive, capacitive and inductive loads are incorporated to investigate the behavior of MG outputs. Overall, the MG system design and hardware implementation, the transmission line model and the algorithms in software environment as LabView and OPAL-RT, the results and its verification are discussed.

Real Time (RT) simulation of Power Electronics (PE) allows engineers to interface real-time controls for controller hardware-in-the-loop CHiL. CHiL verification moves a design from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 to TRL 4. For RT CHiL simulation of DC protection systems, the RT simulation platform must be able to simulate common mode behavior, various grounding schemes, and fault transients at sufficiently high resolution so as not to interfere with the protection system design. This paper demonstrates this capability using a Latency Based Linear Multistep Compount (LB-LMC) simulation method implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), in order to achieve 50ns resolution of common mode behaviors, including Line-to-Ground (LG) overvoltages resulting from LG faults and fault recovery in ungrounded DC systems. This resolution in RT cannot be achieved with today's commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) RT CHiL platforms. Furthermore, this capability can be expanded to other grounding schemes and larger PE networks, enabling RT CHiL validation of protection schemes for networks of power electronic converters at TRL 4.

In this paper, design and analysis of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicle bus propulsion is performed based on Finite Element Method. As the increase of the advanced application which requires precise control, the inverter is regarded as requisite for controlling electric machines. In addition multi-domain co-simulation is important to consider the inter-linking effect of the system as well as the conventional sinusoidal input analysis to investigate the characteristics of electric machines, specifically. Therefore, Multi-domain co-simulation is performed to consider the effect of inverter current, containing time harmonics, to the characteristics of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor in system circumstance. Simulated result is validated by comparing it with experimental result. Lastly, virtual driving test using hardware-in-the-loop simulation is performed with co-simulated data to verify the reliability of multi-domain co-simulation model in virtual driving system.

According to the attitude update request of micro-inertial measurement system in some Aircraft, a new method Rodrigues parameters attitude update algorithm was put forward attitude update. And then attitude differential equations and attitude matrix were proposed based on Rodrigues parameters. Under angle velocity as the input with low-accuracy micro-mechanical velocity gyro, attitude errors were analyzed respectively using quaternion algorithm, sample rotation vector algorithm and Rodrigues parameters algorithm, the error of Rodrigues parameters algorithm is mostly the same as quaternion algorithm error, higher precision than ample rotation vector algorithm;In the calculation, Rodrigues parameters algorithm is Significantly small than quaternion algorithm and sample rotation vector algorithm. Finally, through hardware-in-the loop simulation experiment, the experiment show Rodrigues parameters attitude update algorithm is feasible, and it has some actual engineering applicable value.

The Flight Control Switching Mechanism System (FCSWMS) can give a pilot-selectable research control law capability due to the Research Flight Control Computer (RFCC) and the basis triplex Primary Flight Control Computer (PFCC), therefore this system provides a flexible platform for control law algorithm research. The Research Flight Control System (RFCS) supports a design capability for relatively fast control law modifications and development, while retaining safety of flight through the PFCC. The RFCS processor was designed by more improved performance than primary FCC processor for the implementation of switching algorithm on the FCSWMS. The application software based on VxWorks operating system was developed on the tornado development environment. The verification and validation of research flight control computer system and software was performed in the hardware-in-the loop simulation environment including the primary Right control computer, cockpit and etc.. The RFCS verified through the software and system test will be useful for a variety of advanced control law research and future flight control system development.

The ongoing transition of low voltage (LV) power grids towards active systems requires novel evaluation and testing concepts, in particular for realistic testing of devices. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) evaluations are a promising approach for this purpose. This paper presents preliminary investigations addressing the systematic design of PHIL applications and their applicable stability mechanisms and gives a detailed review of the related work. A requirement analysis for emulation of grid situations demanding system services is given and the realization of a PHIL setup is demonstrated in a residential scenario, comprising a hybrid electrical energy storage system (HESS).

With increasing of the complexity and size of today's embedded systems, verification of the hardware and embedded software has become the critical challenge in the development process. Safety related systems, such as automotive, railways and medical, require even more detailed and documented process for quality assessment, and thus massive tests spanning billions of cycles. Meeting this challenge requires multilateral, advanced verification technologies delivering the highest performance possible to accelerate the verification process. A step towards system test automation and acceleration is real time hardware emulation. There are numerous approaches, related to it, generally called hardware in the loop (HIL). Some of them aim to emulate the target microcontrollers, others-the attached peripherals. In this paper we present multi-microcontroller system that emulates different peripheral types. Using an example use-case from the automotive industry (automotive seat heater) are discussed the possible emulation speeds, synchronization, and the difference between the emulation and the real system setup.

The short-circuit response of a voltage source converter (VSC) can vary from each other significantly with different control strategies. This study investigates the performance of distance protection under unbalanced faults considering two control strategies during fault-ride-through using hardware-in-the-loop tests. Variations on fault type, converter current limit, fault resistance and pre-fault power flow conditions are also examined. The tests reveal that the error in measured impedance caused by fault resistance will be enlarged in a converter-dominated power system. The first control strategy tends to cause overreach problem while the second can raise both overreach and underreach problems. The indeterminacy associated with the second strategy is jointly affected by control parameters, converter current limit, fault resistance and pre-fault power flow conditions. The findings of this study can help to stipulate grid requirements under unbalanced faults.
