A hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS) platform for a hybrid power system is designed and researched. Based on CAN network and xPC-Target real-time simulation, a distributed real-time HIL simulation platform is established. More details about the platform including the scheme design, the data acquisition system, the interface, the simulation software, the electronic load, the CAN communication protocol are presented. With a Ultracapacitor in the loop, a backward simulation on the hybrid power system are carried out respectively on this platform. It is verified that the hybrid power system design has great advantages on the optimization of battery's working conditions which would be useful to extend the battery's lifespan. Also, the platform designed in this paper meets the real-time simulation requirements effectively and provides a method for more complicated simulation on electric vehicles. © 2011 IEEE.

The integration of smart grid concepts has been a good strategy for increasing power systems automation, where the activities of all consumers and producers are intelligently and efficiently combined to distribute sustainable, cost-effective, and se-cure electricity sources. Installing small computational units in distribution feeders and active loads provides the technological resources to automate the network in collaboration with conventional protection systems present in substations. Developing these computational units with communication protocol standards and data models ensures system security and interoperability. Their technological innovation presents a challenge that must be addressed. As a result, such computational units should employ hardware-in-the-loop simulation as a mechanism to study typical and critical operating scenarios. This study introduces a hybrid technique for simulating transients in distribution systems. This approach offers a powerful combination by merging the fast sampling rate of time-domain models used for voltage and current monitoring with the processing efficiency of algorithms designed for quasi-stationary or steady-state. Tests in a real distribution network under short-circuit conditions demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. © 2023 IEEE.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF AN ACTIVE HEAVE COMPENSATION SYSTEM ON AN OFFSHORE SUPPLY VESSEL USING THE hardware-in-the-loop simulation

The active heave compensation (AHC) system on an offshore supply vessel (OSV) plays a pivotal role in offshore installation operations by minimizing the heave motion of suspended subsea equipment, regardless of the OSV motion. In order to successfully perform its function, the AHC system should have a suitable control algorithm, and its performance must be evaluated in advance of operation. Performance analysis of the AHC system requires complicated testing procedures, and a great deal of associated equipment. In particular, such analysis is often very costly and time-consuming, and realistic conditions are typically impossible to establish in a testing environment. To solve this problem, the hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) concept can be used as an effective method to test an AHC system prior to its final installation. In this study, we have constructed the HILS environment for an AHC system for an OSV, and conducted a performance analysis of the AHC system. To do so, a virtual model of the OSV was first created from a multi body system that can represent realistic motion in waves. Then, a controller of the AHC system with a control algorithm for heave compensation was implemented on real hardware. Next, an integrated simulation interface was implemented to efficiently connect the virtual model and the controller, and a visualization model was developed to verify simulation results by immersive and realistic views. Finally, a performance analysis of the AHC system was conducted within the proposed HILS environment. A numerical example is a deadweight 3,500 ton OSV to install a subsea manifold in regular and irregular waves. A comparative study between uncontrolled and controlled results of the AHC system was further performed. As a result, the performance of the AHC system could be evaluated effectively within the HILS environment.

Hybrid analytical model of switched reluctance machine for real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation

Applications of switched reluctance machine (SRM) are increasing in the industry due to their many desirable features. This study proposes a hybrid analytical model (HAM) of the SRM for the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. To obtain satisfactory accuracy, the phase flux linkage is solved by the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method when the stator and rotor poles overlap, and by the space harmonic method (SHM) when the poles do not overlap. The backward Euler and Newton-Raphson methods are used to calculate the exciting current, while the Gaussian quadrature is used to compute the electromagnetic torque in the HIL simulation. The digital hardware implementation of computation components are developed on the field-programmable gate array by exploiting the parallel hardware architecture and fully pipelined arithmetic processing. To highlight the performance of the HAM, the captured real-time results are compared with the off-line transient solution obtained through the co-simulation of Ansys Maxwell((R)), Ansys Simplorer((R)), and Simulink((R)), which model the SRM, drive circuit, and control system, respectively.

An adaptive control approach for semi-active suspension systems under unknown road disturbance input using hardware-in-the-loop simulation

This article presents an application of the adaptive control method to semi-active suspension systems in the presence of unknown disturbance and parametric uncertainty. Due to the technical difficulties such as time delay and sensor noise, the road disturbance is assumed to be unmeasured. To overcome this problem, an observer is designed to estimate the disturbance. It is considered that the road profile consists of a finite number of the sum of sinusoidal signals with unknown amplitudes, phases and frequencies. After the parametrization of the observer, the adaptive control approach is employed to attenuate the effect of the road-induced vibrations using a magnetorheological damper. It is proved that the closed-loop system is stable, despite the adverse road conditions. Finally, the performance of the controller is illustrated with a hardware-in-the-loop simulation in which the system is subjected to sinusoidal and random profile road excitations. To demonstrate the benefits of the adaptive controller, the results are presented in comparison with a conventional proportional integral derivative (PID) controller.

Soft Landing of a Hybrid Rocket Thruster Powered Platform: hardware-in-the-loop simulation

Soft landing, defined as a controlled and gentle touchdown which prevents any damage, is a crucial phase of planetary landing modules and vertical take-off and landing aircraft. This paper discusses the soft landing of a hybrid rocket-thruster-powered platform using a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) framework. The concept of a hybrid rocket thruster-powered platform was conceived as part of a system development study aimed at bringing out an effective propulsion unit for achieving VTOL in aircraft and UAVs. To simplify the scope of the preliminary investigation, the platform's movement was restricted to vertical translation. The hardware-in-the-loop simulation setup integrates a lab-scale hybrid rocket thruster in the hardware module with the simulated platform dynamics model. A control algorithm was implemented to regulate/tweak the real-time hardware-the thruster-to enable the simulated model of the platform to track a predefined descent velocity profile. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller regulated the oxidiser valve opening, controlling the oxidiser flow rate to the hybrid rocket motor and, consequently, the thrust to maintain the desired velocity profile of the platform during the descent. The hardware-in-the-loop simulation setup demonstrated a successful soft landing of the platform with a touchdown velocity of less than 1 m/s.

Extended Discrete-State Event-Driven hardware-in-the-loop simulation for Power Electronic Systems Based on Virtual-Time-Ratio Regulation

This article proposes an extended discrete-state event-driven (EDSED) controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) method for power electronic systems, employing virtual-time-ratio (VTR) regulation to achieve CHIL function. Specifically, the proposed VTR in CHIL simulation is introduced to define the time ratio at which the mathematical model of the power circuit runs in the simulator. In addition, by adjusting different VTRs, the data interaction between the simulator and the controller is modified and employed as an event to trigger both simulation and control calculations, ensuring a precise correlation between simulation data and control information. The proposed EDSED CHIL simulation method is validated through CHIL and full hardware experiments involving a power electronic transformer (PET) and a multiport power router (MPR). This article offers an effective CHIL solution for testing control strategies and codes in power electronic systems characterized by complex coupling and high frequency.

Real-Time Nonlinear Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Model of Induction Machine on FPGA for hardware-in-the-loop simulation

Real-time simulation of induction machine plays a crucial role in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) scenarios. Due to the key advantages offered by magnetic equivalent circuits (MEC) for modeling induction machines compared with finite element analysis and electric equivalent circuits in terms of computational expense and achieved accuracy, this paper proposes a real-time nonlinearMECof the induction machine. Themodel is emulated in real time on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) by exploiting the parallel hardware architecture and fully pipelined arithmetic processing. The performance of the FPGA-based real-time emulated induction machine model is investigated and compared with the behavior of an experimental setup of induction machine and finite element results to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of proposed approach for HIL applications.

A holistic concurrent design approach to robotics using hardware-in-the-loop simulation

This paper discusses a practical approach to the concurrent design of robot manipulators, which is based on an alternative design methodology, namely Holistic Concurrent Design (HCD), as well as the utilization of a modular hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Holistic concurrent design is a systematic design methodology for mechatronic systems that formalizes subjective notions of design, resulting in the simplification of the multi-objective constrained optimization process. Its premise is to enhance the communication between designers with various backgrounds and customers, and to consider numerous design variables with different natures concurrently. The methodology redefines the ultimate goal of design based on the qualitative notion of satisfaction, and formalizes the effect of designer's subjective attitude in the process. The hardware-in-the-loop platform involves physical joint modules and the control unit of a manipulator in addition to the software simulation to reduce modeling complexities and to take into account physical phenomena that are hard to be captured mathematically. This platform is implemented in the HCD design architecture to reliably evaluate the design attributes and performance supercriterion during the design process. The resulting architecture is applied to redesigning kinematic, dynamic and control parameters of an industrial manipulator. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Research on discontinuous guidance and hardware-in-the-loop simulation for unmanned underwater vehicle

Based on the application of important water area blockade, a new discontinuous guidance approach of an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) perpendicularly towards side of surface ship is proposed, and a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system is established to demonstrate this guidance approach. This approach can be described as follows: a near-surface straight trajectory which is perpendicular to the predicted ship trajectory is figured out by detection device of UUV which is hidden underwater after the ship target is located. When the horizontal distance between UUV and the ship target meets start-up condition, UUV climbs to a certain depth near the sea surface and then runs along the horizontal straight trajectory. During its motion, UUV periodically measures the sight line between the UUV and ship target. In order to restrain the horizontal rotation of the sight line, a discontinuous guidance approach is proposed by using the deviation of the two adjacent sight lines and the distance between the UUV and the ship target to adjust the UUV's velocity. After certain times of adjustment of the UUV's velocity, UUV impacts the side of ship target perpendicularly with required accuracy. This near-surface discontinuous guidance approach makes it possible for UUV to be guided through optical or radar detection. Further discussions are made including miss distance caused by this proposed guidance approach, cycle of sight line detection, UUV's non-attack zone and UUV start-up condition. Finally, a set of HILS is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the discontinuous guidance approach on an experimentally validated UUV model.
