In the process of developing guided munitions, ground test can only verify the performance of integrated navigation system in low dynamic condition, and it's costly and risky to use means of authentication such as flight test and throw experiment. This paper proposes a kind of hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HMS) scheme with tri-axial turntable for verifying the performance of navigation system in high dynamic condition. It respectively uses quaternion method and four-sample rotation vector algorithm as attitude updating algorithms for comparison. On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of some tactical missile and the HILS system, the error sources of integrated navigation system in the simulation with turntable and that without turntable are discussed in detail. The results of HILS show that integrated navigation system is of good performance under high dynamic environment;moreover, for the fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) inertial measurement unit (IMU) which outputs angular rate, quaternion method is better than four-sample rotation vector algorithm.

Geomagnetic navigation leverages the ubiquitous Earth's magnetic signals to navigate missions, without dependence on GPS services or pre-stored geographic maps. It has drawn increasing attention and is promising particularly for long-range navigation into unexplored areas. Current geomagnetic navigation studies are still in the early stages with simulations and computational validations, without concrete efforts to develop cost-friendly test platforms that can empower deployment and experimental analysis of the developed approaches. This paper presents a hardware-in-the-loop simulation testbed to support geomagnetic navigation experimentation. Our testbed is dedicated to synthesizing geomagnetic field environment for the navigation. We develop the software in the testbed to simulate the dynamics of the navigation environment, and we build the hardware to generate the physical magnetic field, which follows and aligns with the simulated environment. The testbed aims to provide controllable magnetic field that can be used to experiment with geomagnetic navigation in labs, thus avoiding real and expensive navigation experiments, e.g., in the ocean, for validating navigation prototypes. We build the testbed with off-the-shelf hardware in an unshielded environment to reduce cost. We also develop the field generation control and hardware parameter optimization for quality magnetic field generation. We conduct a detailed performance analysis to show the quality of the field generation by the testbed, and we report the experimental results on performance indicators, including accuracy, uniformity, stability, and convergence of the generated field towards the target geomagnetic environment. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

One of the most challenging and risky missions for spacecraft is to perform Rendezvous and Docking (RvD) autonomously in space. To ensure a safe and reliable operation, such a mission must be carefully designed and thoroughly verified before a real space mission can be launched. This paper describes the impact-contact dynamics simulation capability of a new, robotics-based, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) RvD simulation facility which uses two industrial robots to simulate 6-DOF dynamic maneuvering of two docking satellites. The facility is capable of physically simulating the final approaching within 25-meter range and the entire docking/capturing process in a satellite on-orbit servicing mission. The paper briefly discusses the difficulties of using industrial robots for HIL contact dynamics simulation and how these problems are solved. Admittance control strategy is proposed to control the robotic system to make the robot dynamically behave like the spacecraft during a physical interception. The control strategy works as an outer loop on the top of the existing control system of the industrial robot and hence, it does not require altering the joint control hardware and software which are inaccessible for an industrial robot. A simulation study has shown that the methodology can accurately simulate the impact-contact dynamics behavior of the spacecraft in a docking operation.

This paper describes the design of model predictive control (MPC) for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used to track objects of interest identified by a real-time camera vision (CV) module in a search and track (SAT) autonomous system. A fully functional UAV payload is introduced, which includes an infra-red (IR) camera installed in a two-axis gimbal system. hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulations are performed to test the MPC's performance in the SAT system, where the gimbal attitude and the UAV's flight trajectory are optimized to place the object to be tracked in the center of the IR camera's image.

We propose a Convertible Static Transmission Controller (CSTC) concept that enables coordinated power flow control with emphasis on large penetration of renewable energy resources based transmission in a meshed network. CSTS can be connected across the substation power transformer and reconfigured for different modes of operation to perform as a versatile transmission controller with several functions including: power flow control for transmission of renewable resources, and as a transformer back-up for disaster management and/or life extension purposes. Different connecting configuration options, i.e. shunt-shunt, series-shunt, and series-series can be obtained. In this paper, we demonstrated the viability of the proposed concept using Typhoon HIL400 ultra-high fidelity hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system in three different modes of operation. HIL simulations are used to verify the validity of the proposed control architecture for CSTC operation during both normal and unbalanced power system conditions for different connecting configurations.

This paper presents an approach to realize an equivalent hardware representation of PM synchronous machines through a physics-based machine model for hardware-in-the-loop simulation of PWM drives. The equivalent hardware representation of the machine is achieved using a controllable load. The load current is controlled to be the same as the currents obtained over the physics-based model of the machine. The physics-based model of the machine is built using parameters obtained from the solutions of the transient FE computation covering a complete ac cycle. The modeling of the machine in such a way includes the details of machine design and their impacts on the machine performance during its operation. The presented work introduces a new method to perform the HIL-based machine control experiment studies before the actual fabrication of the machine or under the circumstances where the direct use of the actual machine is unavailable.

This paper presents the first application of the Robotic hardware-in-the-loop simulation (RHILS) platform developed to allow the analysis and synthesis of robot manipulators and their controllers. The RHILS platform was applied to the CRS CataLyst-5 manipulator from Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., and then evaluated on its performance and usefulness as a simulation and design tool. Some conclusions are reached about the potential of the platform for use in research and industry, and plans for further development are outlined.

The hardware-in-the-loop simulation system, which provides a precise, controllable and repeatable test conditions, is an important part of the development of the semi-active laser (SAL) guided weapons. In this paper, laser energy chain characteristics were studied, which provides a theoretical foundation for the SAL guidance technology and the hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. Firstly, a simplified equation was proposed to adjust the radar equation according to the principles of the hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. Secondly, a theoretical model and calculation method were given about the energy chain characteristics based on the hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. We then studied the reflection characteristics of target and the distance between the missile and target with major factors such as the weather factors. Finally, the accuracy of modeling was verified by experiment as the values measured experimentally generally follow the theoretical results from the model. And experimental results revealed that ratio of attenuation of the laser energy exhibited a non-linear change vs. pulse number, which were in accord with the actual condition.

This paper presents the real-time hardware-in-theloop simulation (HILS) of DC microgrids containing multiple distributed resources (DRs) such as a battery energy storage system, a small distributed generator and a smart DC load. The power grid and the DRs are developed in the real-time simulation software, specifically Opal-RT RT-LAB software. The controllers of the DRs are developed as hardware devices using AVR microcontroller named as ATMega-128. The simulation model and hardware devices are integrated in the HILS framework. Each controller of the DRs acts as an intelligent agent that can communicate and cooperate with the coordinator and other agents. Emergency demand response problems are applied to the HILS setup for the performance verification.
