This paper presents an evaluation method for accessing a RoboGuide virtual robot cell and establishing control over a PLC-integrated robot system, with the primary objective of enhancing industrial automation capabilities. The experimental setup encompasses the simulation of a virtual robot cell featuring four Fanucs robots and two part conveyor belts, all controlled through Allen-Bradley PLC-based systems and a Human Machine Interface (HMI). This technological framework enables the testing and validation of control code on simulated industrial systems, ultimately contributing to increased operational efficiency and productivity. The study not only outlines the essential components involved in various industrial sectors but also assesses their efficacy, offering valuable insights into practical applications. Emphasizing the critical role of quality control and assurance in the automation sector for ensuring product standards and safety, the paper describes a simulation created within RoboGuide. In this simulation, the robot and PLC establish full-duplex communication over an Ethernet TCP/IP protocol. A custom control panel is developed, connecting the HMI to the PLC, thereby enabling the execution of robot actions or teaching pendant programs within the simulation environment. The core objective of this research is to assess the functionality of an assembly line using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation prior to the implementation of Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) in a real-world industrial setting.

With the evolution of autonomous vehicle (AV), especially its ability to cope with harsh conditions, which is attracting intense attention from both academia and industry practitioners. Due to the high risk, high cost, and great difficulties of real road testing for AV, the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform is considered as a safe, economical, and effective testing method. In this paper, we developed a novel indoor virtual-reality combined HIL simulation platform for AV testing. This platform consists of a series of subsystems including math models, physical hardware and software components, on which all parts of an AV can be tested separately and jointly. To validate the functionality and performance of the platform, we adopt Udwadia-Kalaba(U-K) approach to build autonomous emergency braking (AEB) control algorithm as a case study due to explicitness and simplicity of U-K approach. Further, a group of comparison experiments on both real road environment and the proposed indoor HIL platform is conducted. The experimental results show that the testing data obtained from the proposed HIL platform have a high similarity to those of the real road tests. Simultaneously, the testing time and repeatability of the former perform better, which confirms its feasibility and effectiveness on the vehicle AEB testing.

The unified power flow controller (UPFC) is one of the most advanced devices in the flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) family. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has recently become popular in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission and FACTS systems. The application of the MMC in a UPFC is an innovative idea, but its controller features a complex and hierarchical structure that requires testing and coordinating on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform. This paper illustrates the architecture of the control and protection (C&P) system for the UPFC, and then presents the implementation of the HIL test of a complete C&P system for the MMC-based UPFC, using a commercial-off-the-shelf real-time simulator. Two different decoupling tools, namely the State-space Nodal (SSN) interface and decoupling transformer model, are used to decouple the model of the UPFC substation and its adjacent electric power grids into several partitions for parallel computation. simulation results from the HIL test under various normal operation modes, as well as contingencies, are presented for in this paper.

An AUV simulation platform is an essential and indispensable tool for the development of AUV control systems. This paper presents a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform, mainly consisting of an AUV host computer and a simulation server, to facilitate the design of control algorithms for a new AUV developed by the Institute of Undersea Technology (IUT). The thruster commands, generated from the AUV host computer, and the simulated sensor data, generated from the simulation server, have the same formats as those of the real thrusters and sensors to be installed on the new IUT-AUV II. simulations for two types of hybrid control, i.e. the depth-heading control and the altitude-heading control, were carried out to validate the functionality of the HIL simulation platform. Based on the observations at runtime, once the HIL simulation platform is activated, thruster commands and sensor data will migrate between the AUV host computer and the simulation server. The AUV motion data can be displayed and saved through the GUI at runtime. The saved AUV motion data can be used to modify the AUV control algorithms under development. simulation results and runtime observations imply that the presented HIL simulation platform could be an effective platform for the development of AUV control systems.

hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulation system is the one that puts the critical hardware in the mathematical simulation loop. FlightSim is a mathematical simulation platform developed by Beihang University, which has excellent performance and can develop large amounts of mathematical simulation programs. RTX (Real-Time eXtension) is the real-time expansion module that upgrades the Windows operation system to a strong real-time operation system. Therefore, with the aid of RTX, FlightSim can be used to develop HIL real-time simulation programs. In other words, FlightSim is used for building the mathematical simulation model, and RTX is utilized for creating the real-time simulation environment. In this paper, the real-time simulation of the mathematical engagement model under the RTX is performed, which indicates the correctness of the real-time simulation results compared with non-real-time simulation based on MATLAB. Secondly, the PID motor driver and controller arc designed and tested. Finally, several types of encoder velocity estimation methods are compared. The simulation results show that FlightSim can perform HIL simulation with the extension of RTX.

An improved distributed control is proposed for enhancing a flexibility of changing the control strategy depending on the dc microgrid situation. The conventional distributed control has the limitation of changing control strategy because of its control method. In the proposed control method, a local controller of conventional distributed control divided into two layers. First, the local layer performs inner voltage and current loops. Second, the flexible layer performs the primary and secondary control. Since the flexible layer performs most of the control for operating dc microgrid, the control strategy can be changed easily by changing the primary and secondary control in this layer. Moreover, the burden of data processing at the local controller is reduced through the flexible layer of the proposed method. Therefore, it becomes easy to manufacture converters in multi-vendor without control platform standardization. The experimental results based on Typhoon HIL 402 are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach.

This paper discusses a Dual Mode hardware-in-the-loop simulation facility developed for the dynamic evaluation of IR/RF dual mode seekers. A unique concept combines the collimated target images from an Infrared Scene Simulator and an RF Target Projector using an IR/RF "dichroic" and reflects/transmits to the seeker under test. The combined IR/RF target scene generator is mounted on a two axis target motion simulator. The dual mode seeker is mounted in a three axis flight simulator, allowing the missile-to-target scenario to be simulated across wide dynamic conditions. The paper will discuss the Infrared Scene Simulator including the design constraints due to the physical/dynamic operating environment, the target characteristics, and the properties of the IR/RF target combining dichroic. The RF Target Projector will be described including the design goals for range performance, and the RF feed horn system. System performance characteristics will be described including computer simulations of the RF Target Projector performance and laboratory tests of the Infrared Scene simulation. © 1990 SPIE. Electromagnetic environment is the main war field environment in the future EW. The capability of controlling it affects the progress of the war and decides which side will win. The level of researching it influences and restricts the development of EW equipment. The Gulf-war and the Kousow-war are two good examples. By using VR technology, Virtual Electromagnetic environment provides a necessary environment for the manufacture and development of EW equipment, and at the same time a required platform for establishing and validating tactics use principles of EW equipment. This paper discusses four important characteristics about VR technology. It presents a typical architecture of EW equipment hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. It expatiates the main composition of a virtual electromagnetic environment, and presents the methods and relative technology that can be used when building such modules. Lastly it discusses the application of VR technology in the EW hardware-in-the-loop simulation test system.

In this study, we develop a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform for the investigation of Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) at campus-level distribution network. The VGI HIL simulation is performed with a real-time simulator, OPAL-RT. The VGI HIL model can communicate with a Smart Energy Plaza at Argonne National Laboratory through Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) communication protocol. A hierarchical energy management system is also developed, which manages VGI operation at both campus-level and node-level. At the distribution network level, it distributes available power to individual nodes. At the nodelevel, it coordinates PEV charging load and non-PEV load to track the assigned power reference, meanwhile, fairly dispatches the limited power to PEVs within the node. To validate the developed VGI model and evaluate the effectiveness of the hierarchical energy management algorithms, HIL simulations are performed with different power limits. The generated simulation results are further analyzed and compared.

In order to capture the target more quickly, some seekers of air-to-ground missile were intentionally installed with an angle between the optical axis and the body axis in vertical plane, which is defined as the pitching angle of optical axis. Aiming at solving the problem that the strapdown seeker cannot measure the line-of-sight (LOS) rate directly, a LOS rate estimate method based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) has been presented and a hardware-in-the-loop simulation experiment using a real strapdown laser seeker with a pitching angle of optical axis was made to evaluate the scheme in this paper. It shows that the LOS angle and rate obtained from a real strapdown laser seeker can basically match with that derived from a mathematical model of a gimbaled laser seeker. With an accurate Circular Error Probable (CEP), it provides feasibility and effectiveness for engineering applications of a real strapdown laser seeker with a pitching angle of optical axis utilizing the EKF algorithm to estimate the LOS rate.
