Connected vehicle is a typical application that is demonstrated in intelligent transport systems. hardware-in-the-loop simulations put discrete events, finite states transition, and continuous vehicle dynamics modeling together to conveniently and effectively achieve the integration and test of connected vehicle system. The emphasis and difficulty of the connected vehicle system are discussed, including loosely coupled distributed architecture, information sharing, and conflict resolution mechanism among vehicles, roadsides and information center, and collaborative control scheme driven by discrete event flow, and results of cooperative driving for connected vehicle via HILS are also given.

hardware-in-the-loop simulations with Umbra Conditions for Spacecraft Rendezvous with PMD Visual Sensors

This paper addresses the validation of a robust vision-based pose estimation technique using a Photonic Mixer Device (PMD) sensor as a single visual sensor in the close-range phase of spacecraft rendezvous. First, it was necessary to integrate the developed hybrid navigation technique for the PMD sensor into the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) rendezvous system developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Thereafter, HIL tests were conducted using the European Proximity Operation Simulator (EPOS) with sun simulation and in total darkness. For the future missions with an active sensor, e.g., a PMD camera, it could be useful to use only its own illumination during the rendezvous phase in penumbra or umbra, instead of additional flash light. In some tests, the rotational rate of the target object was also tuned. Unlike the rendezvous tests in other works, here we present for the first time closed-loop approaches with only depth and amplitude images of a PMD sensor. For the rendezvous tests in the EPOS laboratory, the Argos3D camera was used at the range of 8 to 5.5 m;the performance showed promising results.

This paper presents hybrid power filter (HPF) performance evaluation procedure by applying special simulation hardware for digital real-time power system simulation (RTDS). RTDS simulator enables real-time calculation of electromagnetic phenomena with calculation time step of even 1-2 mu s. Special hardware makes possible of importing and exporting of electrical signals from the simulator to external equipment and therefore so called hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing. Such simulations provide an insight in the equipment behaviour and also the influence of this equipment to system operation. In this paper a combination of a three-phase, two-level, voltage-source converter connected in parallel with the inductor of a shunt, single-tuned, passive filter is tested. To control the active part, a proportional-resonant (PR), multi-loop controller is used. The testing has shown a remarkable usefulness of the RTDS simulator for determination of actual electrical system equipment behaviour in various system conditions.

An Adaptive Special Protection Scheme Coordinating Multiple Generation Units for Damping Power System Natural Oscillations

This paper presents a special protection scheme (SPS) that mitigates natural oscillations in the power system by enabling selected adaptive power oscillation damping (APOD) controllers in wind farms or synchronous generators. The SPS activation is triggered by an online power oscillation detection algorithm. Furthermore, to tackle the intricacies of time delays within the control system, an adaptive time delay compensator (ATDC) has been integrated into the SPS control scheme. The SPS is tested on the New England 39 bus system by numerical simulations and in the Nordic 44 system by experimental testing with a hardware-in-the-loop approach. The numerical results show that the proposed SPS can increase the damping of low-frequency natural oscillations (LFOs) significantly and even avoid unstable situations with growing oscillations. Moreover, the laboratory validation demonstrates that the system is able to run in real-time and that the time delays caused by PMU measurements, communication, and computation can be handled correctly. Thus, the proposed SPS concept can possibly be implemented to serve as an additional and automatic tool for the system operators to damp natural power oscillations by coordinated control of multiple sources.

Real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation for islanding detection schemes in hybrid distributed generation systems

The increasing penetration level of renewable energy brings new challenges to the field of islanding detection. In this study, a decision-tree (DT)-learning method with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations is proposed to address the non-detection zone (NDZ) issue of islanding detection in hybrid distributed generation systems including both inverter- and synchronous-machine-based distributed energy resources. This method can effectively reduce the NDZ through advanced relay training strategy and utilise the advantage of real-time simulators on simulation efficiency. In addition, the generated DT can be programmed into a real relay and then get validated through HIL simulations. The HIL implementation adds a practical dimension to the proposed method. With the proposed method, the laboratory testing results indicate promising islanding detection performance in terms of dependability, security, reduced NDZ area and detection time.

Characterisation and optimisation of a real-time diesel engine model

Accurate real-time engine models are an essential step to allow the development of control algorithms in parallel to the development of engine hardware using hardware-in-the-loop applications. A physics-based model of the engine high-pressure air path and combustion chamber is presented. The model was parameterised using data from a small set of carefully selected operating conditions for a 2.0 l diesel engine. The model was subsequently validated over the complete engine operating map with exhaust gas recirculation and without exhaust gas recirculation. A high level of fit was achieved with R-2 values above 0.94 for the mean effective pressure and above 0.99 for the air flow rate. The model run time was then reduced for real-time application by using forward differencing and single-precision floating-point numbers and by calculating the in-cylinder prediction for only a single cylinder. A further improvement of 25% in the run time was achieved by improving the submodels, including the strategic use of one-dimensional and two-dimensional look-up tables with optimised resolution. The model exceeds the performance of similar models in the literature, achieving a crank angle resolution of 0.5 degrees at 4000r/min. This simulation step size still yields good accuracy in comparison with a crank angle resolution of 0.1 degrees and was validated against the experimental results from a New European Driving Cycle. The real-time model allows the development of control strategies before the engine hardware is available, meaning that more time can be spent to ensure that the engine can meet the performance and the emissions requirements over its full operating range.

The integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the power system requires an upgrade of the adopted management and control solutions. Focusing on frequency regulation, the same RES, as well as loads, both possibly coupled with energy storage systems, are called to provide a contribution through suitable regulation services. In this context, this paper proposes a control strategy for enabling a unit composed by a Wind Farm and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) to provide a fast frequency regulation service. The control is based on Model Predictive Control technique, whereas the regulation service is defined according to the technical requirements of the Italian Transmission System Operator (TSO). The approach is also tested via hardware-in-the-loop simulations. More specifically, tests are carried out by implementing the control algorithm on a Raspberry Pi board that communicates with a real BESS and with a real-time simulator implementing a benchmark power system. The validation results prove the practical effectiveness of the proposed control method since they demonstrate that the designed algorithms can be implemented on a low-cost hardware and applied, without computational and communication issues, in a real-field framework.

Stabilization of hardware-in-the-loop Ideal Transformer Model Interfacing Algorithm by Using Spectrum Assignment

This paper deals with stabilization of an ideal transformer model (ITM) circuit, used as an interfacing algorithm for hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The ITM allows for the distribution of simulation model computations over multiple processors or can be used in power hardware-in-the-loop simulations. When specific impedance conditions of the partitioned circuit are not met, this interfacing algorithm becomes unstable. This paper first presents a new theoretical approach for representing the ITM interfacing algorithm that is based on delay differential equations. With a stability analysis of the obtained time-delay system, a stabilization method is proposed, which increases the stability boundaries of the ITM algorithm. Simulation examples, including the scenario of a two-level inverter system, are provided.

Aliasing and scintillation reduction in real-time computer graphics

Aliasing is unavoidable in real-time computer image generation due to the sampling processes occurring within the graphics hardware. In particular, aliasing produces scintillation effects and significant radiometric inaccuracy when targets are rendered at long range. This problem was alleviated some years ago by the development of a zoom anti-aliasing (ZAA) technique within infrared missile seeker hardware-in-the-loop simulations. An alternative ZAA technique based on extensive I use of available graphics hardware functions is described here and compared to the original technique.
