Research on anode inlet pressure control strategy of PEMFC through hardware-in-the-loop test

Stable pressure control can improve the efficiency and lifespan of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems. The anode inlet pressure of the hydrogen supply system in PEMFC is easily affected by changes in current load and purge disturbances. In response to these issues, a second-order nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (NLADRC) method applicable to the system is proposed. Firstly, a dynamic model of the hydrogen supply system based on an 80 kW PEMFC is established, and the accuracy of the model is verified. Subsequently, a NLADRC for the hydrogen supply system is designed and compared with the traditional proportional integral derivative (PID) control. Finally, the effect of NLADRC on the fuel-control union (FCU) is verified through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test. The simulation results show that, compared with PID control, the anode inlet pressure of the hydrogen supply system based on the NLDARC has less overshoot, a faster response speed, stronger anti-interference ability and a good following effect. Through the HIL test, it is verified that the NLADRC algorithm is also applicable to the FCU. The model and control method proposed in this paper can be used to optimize the control of the hydrogen supply system and improve the dynamic performance of PEMFC.

Microgrids (MGs) utilising both renewables and energy storage to optimise onsite energy consumption rather than importing power form the utility grid, require a tertiary-level energy management system (EMS). The EMS must monitor and control the energy exchange within the nodes of MG to maximise any solar energy generation and benefit from installed storage. This paper considers a single-family house as the MG that has DC distribution circuit model. The look-ahead EMS is formulated as a linear programming problem, which has been tested in both offline simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation environment. The simulation results indicate that the proposed look-ahead EMS can effectively reduce the DC MG operation cost without any operational constraint violation. In addition, the proposed look ahead energy optimisation approach has the potential to be used in a large-scale system such as a community MG with multiple buildings.

The paper presents the concept, implementation and results of the hardware-in-the-loop test bench (HiL) established for a medium-scale parabolic trough collector system under construction. The 122.4m(2) plant heats the make-up water of a fossil-fired steam boiler in a meat factory in Austria. The test bench consists of a plant model implemented in a Real-Time machine, which is electrically connected to the plant control hardware (PLC) through several I/O terminals. Within the test bench, it is possible to run different test cycles and emulate critical operation scenarios like collector loop overheating. The control strategy of the solar plant can be checked with minimal risk. The test bench also enables to improve the control ability to cope with weather and sensor disturbances. A suitable fault detection strategy is prepared, which minimizes the risk of component damage and enhances the plant availability. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

With the increasing size and complexity of power systems, it is crucial to have an effective protection system in place to ensure its reliability. One of the important components of the protection system are relays. It is important for a relay to operate dependably and securely so that any fault can be cleared in time to minimize damages to the power network. However, it is important to test a relay in a realistic environment before commissioning it to the network. testing a relay in the actual network can be expensive with limited fault scenarios. Hence, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing is an efficient method to perform closed-loop testing of a relay since numerous fault cases can be simulated to provide a realistic operating environment for the relay under test. This paper sheds light on the HIL testing done for protective relays using a sample distribution system using RTDS. Two SEL-351 relays have been used in this experiment, and proper settings for the relays are calculated for coordination. The paper also describes the procedure of configuring the relay and other RTDS components crucial for interfacing of the relay with RTDS. After test setup, a pre-fault, fault, and post-fault analysis was done for the system. The results obtained from these analyses are cross-checked with the event history of the two SEL-351 relays, obtained with AcSELerator Quickset software. This paper provides thorough information for researchers to replicate the presented study or to develop new HIL experiments. It can also help in developing a fundamental understanding of the HIL testing setup that can be further applied to a more complex power system.

Rapid diagnosis of proportional valve pilot stage stiction fault via dynamic model-based temporal features

As the key flow control elements in modern mechatronic systems, electrohydraulic proportional valves determine the total system operating status. Due to effects such as mechanical wear, micro scale particles may accumulate in the oil and eventually cause stiction in the valve spool. Therefore, early prognosis of valve faults via spool displacement sensing is critical for efficient and economical operations. However, the spool stiction is difficult to measure due to the fully enclosed design of valves, excluding the possible sensor installation options. Traditionally, the sensor-less fault diagnosis is done by machine learning to classify the features extracted using frequency domain methods, which can be time consuming and the trained model is computationally too heavy for the onboard controller. In this paper, a light-weight spool stiction diagnosis method is proposed, where time-series features extracted from coil current signals as well as spool dynamics can be used to quantitively determine the stiction severeness. A hardware-in-the-loop test bed is designed to perform valve spool stiction simulating experiments, and a piloted operated solenoid proportional valve is selected as the validation target. A three-layer regression neural network is established as the baseline. Initial results show the proposed model can detect spool stiction at various degrees, which accuracies are on par with the baseline neural network but nearly three orders of magnitude faster.

Dual-loop linear active disturbance rejection control for parafoil airdrop systems in wind environment

In this study, we propose a dual-loop linear active disturbance rejection control method for a parafoil airdrop system to overcome the drawbacks of the system in practical applications. These drawbacks include low trajectory control accuracy, susceptibility to wind disturbances, and limited control agility. The proposed method involves modifying the structure of the heading channel and designing an outer-loop for the heading control and an inner- loop for the roll angle control. By combining this approach with the designed parafoil airdrop system segmented trajectory planning, we effectively utilised the high dynamic response capability of the servo system. This allowed us to resolve the contradiction between fast attitude response and slow position changes, thereby significantly enhancing the trajectory tracking control capability of the parafoil airdrop system. hardware-in-the-loop tests are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the response speed and control performance of a parafoil airdrop system, particularly in wind environments. These findings highlighted the potential of the proposed method for practical applications.

Braking force distribution strategy for virtual rail trains based on I-curve

The virtual rail trains have attracted much attention in recent years thanks to their high passenger capacity and low construction cost. In this paper, braking force distribution strategy for virtual rail trains with three-car and six-axle was studied. Based on the principle of axle load proportion distribution, braking force distribution method of the four-wheel single car under curve braking was studied by applying the I-curve theory. The distribution laws of centrifugal force between axles during curve braking were analyzed, the lateral force provided by the tires of each axle can be calculated, and the remaining tire adhesion can be set as the upper limit of braking force, which can ensure the maximum utilization of tire adhesion. The method was extended to multi-series trains by analyzing the additional influence of hinge points on the lateral force, and a braking force distribution strategy considering the car body hinge coupling relationship was proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the strategy was verified by hardware-in-the-loop tests. The research results provide guidelines on the brake control of newly emerged virtual rail trains.

Hierarchical control for car attitude with double-skyhook semi-active ISD suspension

As a novel control model, the inertance and damping double-skyhook configuration offers a straightforward algorithm and demonstrates flexibility in adapting to different road conditions and loads. However, current research on the double-skyhook configuration focuses primarily on minimizing the vertical vibration to enhance ride comfort, and there is a lack of research on the full-car multiple degrees of freedom (multi-DOF) comprehensive control concerning ride comfort and handling safety. This paper builds on the full-car model, revealing the deficiency that the double-skyhook control strategy overly optimizes car body acceleration, leading to drastic changes in car attitude and significantly compromising handling safety. To address the issue, a hierarchical control strategy is proposed to suppress full-car motion with multi-DOF. The control strategy incorporates a fuzzy control approach based on the double-skyhook configuration. The lower-level controller employs a double-skyhook control strategy to restrain vertical vibrations. The upper-level controller employs a variable universe fuzzy control to coordinate the optimal double-skyhook control forces, suppressing pitch and roll vibrations, thereby achieving a coordinating control of full-car. The 7-DOF full-car suspension model with hierarchical control is set up, followed by simulation analysis and semi-physical experiments. The results indicate that, compared to the double-skyhook suspension, the handling safety of the suspension has been significantly improved while maintaining ride comfort, effectively demonstrating the necessity and benefits of introducing hierarchical control in car suspension systems.
