In recent years, the model predictive control (MPC) has become a powerful control technique capable of dealing with nonlinearities of complex and non-complex systems. This paper presents the implementation of a Dynamic Matrix Control algorithm applied to a single-phase photovoltaic inverter for its application in isolated areas. The proposed algorithm is evaluated in Matlab/Simulink for reference signal tracking and disturbance rejection. The experimental validation is performed at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro through hardware-in-the-loop testing, using a Typhoon HIL402 real-time emulator machine and a dSPACE DS1103 controller board. The results show that this control algorithm is robust to load variations and has a fast response to reference change and disturbance rejection.

Various technologies have been used to achieve IR dynamic scene simulation for evaluation, testing and training for infrared imaging scene sensors. One of the most promising technologies is the use of arrays of resistively heated plates. This technology comes closest to matching the broadband IR spectra of scenes of interest to the IR sensor community. Recent advances in electronics fabrication techniques and especially in the micro-machining of silicon, are enabling arrays to be built with high pixel densities, low power requirements and reasonable cost. Characterization of these arrays is necessary to verify design models and assess process control and feasibility for applications. Reported here are measurements made on three pixel structure designs: bridge resistor, suspended membrane resistor, and post mounted membrane resistor The bridge resistor and the suspended membrane resistor designs are prototypes;the post mounted membrane resistor is an experimental design. Measurements reported include: near field radiance distributions over the pixel areas with calculated effective fill factors, and rise and fall times in a 4-5.5 mu m band;and near field and temperature measurements in the 8-12 mu m band.

The PWM-controlled Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) are commonly used in industrial and utility applications. In spite of superior features of fast voltage regulation and stable DC-link voltage, PWM-controlled VSCs have the major drawback of being sensitive to the grid disturbances especially the unbalanced conditions and system faults. Unbalanced input voltage generates large negative sequence current flow into the converter which results in oscillations with twice the line frequency on the DC-link voltage. This negative sequence current flow might damage the semiconductor switches. Beside the negative sequence voltage, the input voltage distorted with other harmonics also causes converter performance deterioration by producing harmonics on the DC-link voltage. This paper presents an alternative solution to improve the PWM-controlled VSC performance under unbalanced conditions and system faults and also under distorted input voltage condition caused by other harmonics rather than the negative sequence voltage. This solution is based on direct calculation of the negative sequence (or other harmonics) reference voltage without using any current regulator. This elimination of the current regulator makes the proposed controller very fast and robust. The effectiveness of this solution has been validated by simulation and hardware-In-the-loop test.

This paper describes Quanser's Mobile Robot Control Framework (QMRCF) for an educational robot called Qbot. The QMRCF accelerates the development of mobile robot control algorithms and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing using model-based design techniques of MATLAB Simulink. This paper also validates the performance of QMRCF using several experiments in various research fields of mobile robotics, e.g., teleoperation, navigation, and obstacle avoidance.

Most of the real-time control systems at the existing ESO telescopes were developed with "traditional" methods, using general purpose VMEbus electronics, and running applications that were coded by hand, mostly using the C programming language under VxWorks. As we are moving towards more modern design methods, we have explored a model-based design approach for real-time applications in the telescope area, and used the control algorithm of a standard telescope main axis as a first example. We wanted to have a clear work-flow that follows the "correct-by-construction" paradigm, where the implementation is testable in simulation on the development host, and where the testing time spent by debugging on target is minimized. It should respect the domains of control, electronics, and software engineers in the choice of tools. It should be a target-independent approach so that the result could be deployed on various platforms. We have selected the Mathworks tools Simulink, Stateflow, and Embedded Coder for design and implementation, and LabVIEW with NI hardware for hardware-in-the-loop testing, all of which are widely used in industry. We describe how these tools have been used in order to model, simulate, and test the application. We also evaluate the benefits of this approach compared to the traditional method with respect to testing effort and maintainability. For a specific axis controller application we have successfully integrated the result into the legacy platform of the existing VLT software, as well as demonstrated how to use the same design for a new development with a completely different environment.

QUBE is a 3U CubeSat that establishes a secure communication link between a satellite and Earth using quantum key exchange. An accurate Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) is a crucial aspect of this mission. To calibrate the sensors and verify the system performance pre-flight, the team at Zentrum für Telematik e.V.(ZfT) has developed a realistic ADCS test environment. This paper describes the development of a test setup for an ADCS designed specifically for CubeSats and Small Sats. The setup is currently being used for the verification of QUBE, which is scheduled to be flight-ready in 2023, as well as subsequent similar CubeSats. Initial results of the sensor calibration and attitude determination verification are presented. The test setup places the CubeSat on a lightweight 3-axis air bearing, where it is observed by an optical tracking system to measure the satellite's attitude. The air bearing is situated within a Helmholtz cage to simulate the magnetic field of Earth. We envision an integration into an external simulation environment, which can interact with the system under test through a wireless interface to provide the option of closed-loop system testing. The optical tracking system is calibrated using a higher resolution system and its results are also presented. The setup will be used for the calibration of the magnetometers on the air bearing, as well as to assess the attitude determination accuracy and target pointing capability. This paper delves into the practical application of transactive energy markets within community microgrids, making use of an innovative openADR-based microgrid emulator for thorough testing and validation. The emulator serves as a crucial conduit between theoretical concepts and real-world deployment, faithfully emulating the intricate behaviors of microgrids. Four distinct scenarios were meticulously examined: "Surplus Energy Selling,"involving the return of excess energy to the grid;"Prioritized Community Sharing,"which prioritizes local energy consumption within the community;a "Demand Response (DR)"scenario with a 10% load reduction to explore demand-side management potential;and "Energy Auction model using Q-learning,"introducing Q-learning models to optimize energy bidding strategies for efficient distribution within the community. Through rigorous testing in the community microgrid emulator, these scenarios were effectively verified, underscoring the emulator's adaptability and versatility. This unique combination of advanced simulation and hardware-in-loop testing facilitates the exploration of a wide array of energy market strategies and demand-side management techniques, affirming the practical significance and robustness of community microgrid applications in real-world contexts. © 2023 IEEE.

Laboratory validation is an important step in the development of new navigation and estimation algorithms. The laboratory validation process often requires the simulation and/or emulation of vehicles, sensors, and operational environments. At Texas A&M University’s Land, Air, and Space Robotics (LASR) Laboratory, robotics is utilized to provide the necessary motion and sensing capabilities to meet this end. A new robotic platform - the Navigation, Estimation, and Sensing Testbed (NEST) - was developed for the LASR Laboratory to aid the algorithm testing and validation process. NEST combines a suite of sensors, powerful onboard computer, rechargeable battery, and supporting power electronics into a compact, modular chassis. The result is a versatile, reusable vehicle emulation and sensing platform that can be applied to a variety of projects and operated on its own or in conjunction with other robotic platforms and computing units. NEST’s hardware and software are discussed, along with typical utilization within the laboratory.

Extended-Kalman-filter-based equilibrium manifold expansion observer for ramjet nonlinear control

A high-accuracy control-oriented model is an important prerequisite for the design of a ramjet controller, which can provide good engine performance and ensure safe and reliable operation under various environments and working conditions. In this study, we established a control-oriented equilibrium manifold expansion (EME) model for ramjets based on engine operation data. Furthermore, according to the EME model, an uncertainty term was introduced to reflect the steady-state error of the system. Meanwhile, in combination with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm, an EME observer was developed to eliminate the steady-state error and amend the model. Then, we established a model that can reflect the maneuvering characteristics of a ramjet in a large envelope range. Moreover, a feasible nonlinear controller was designed using the EME model and the sliding mode control (SMC) method to further eliminate the influence of model parameter perturbations and enhance the robustness of the control system. A direct control target was designed to further verify the estimation accuracy of the unmeasurable output of the EKF-based EME observer, and to achieve the direct control of the thrust performance and safety performance of a ramjet. Finally, the results of the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment showed that the state variable tracking error of the EME + EKF SMC system was reduced by at least 40% under continuous variable Mach number instructions, and the tracking error was reduced by more than 70% under more extreme simulation instructions. The control system was robust, and the accuracy of the model significantly improved. In addition, the results of the HIL experiment showed that a EME + EKF SMC control system with high accuracy and stability was established with thrust and inlet stability margin as control objectives.(c) 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. Study of an energy dissipative under-ride guard for enhancement of crashworthiness in a car-truck collision

The performance potentials of a concept of an energy dissipating under-ride guard are investigated under direct and oblique impacts to enhance the crashworthiness of automobiles involved in collisions with heavy freight vehicles. The under-ride guard is analytically modelled incorporating non-linearities due to asymmetric damping, stiffness, clearance spring and kinematics of linkages, using the principle of conservation of momentum and Lagrangian dynamics. hardware-in-the-loop tests are performed to evaluate the impact energy dissipated by the damper and to verify the proposed model. The analysis is performed for different angles of impact and coefficients of friction between the automobile bumper and the under-ride guard. The performance benefits of the proposed guard at different impact angles are investigated using performance criteria based upon the magnitude of intrusion of the car mass, peak car mass acceleration, and dissipated energy. A multi-variable design optimization is performed to minimize the magnitude of intrusion and peak acceleration, and maximize the energy dissipated by the damper. The results of the study show that the severity of a crash involving an automobile and a heavy vehicle can be significantly reduced by the proposed guard by: (1) limiting the magnitude of intrusion;and (2) dissipating the part of the crash energy through the damper.
