The optimization of dam operations to transform them into multi-objective facilities constitutes a challenge for both hydrology, hydrogeology, and hydropower generation. However, the use of the optimal algorithm for such transformation is critically important. Additionally, the literature has highlighted that dams might negatively influence the recharge of groundwater. Within this study, we provide an overview of the available algorithms for the optimization of dam operations. Additionally, an overview focusing on hydropower generation in Greece illustrates the high potential of the Mediterranean region for hydropower generation and the application of MAR. The water quality of the reservoirs is also highlighted as a critical parameter. Within this study, we present indices for water quality monitoring in dam reservoirs, while the most prevailing index is the SRDD. This study constitutes a guide for researchers in choosing the optimal tools for the optimization of dam operations and the water quality monitoring of reservoirs. The present study suggests a meta-heuristic optimization methodology using the harmony search algorithm. The model uses a geometric model of the reservoir and calculates the level-supply curve. Furthermore, a multi-criteria optimization model was developed with two objective functions: the maximum power output from the hydroelectric power plant turbines and the optimal groundwater recharge. The model with appropriate parameter modifications can be applied to any small dam as it is a decision- and policy-making methodology, independent of local conditions. A further step is the application of these approaches dealing with field data and the numerical modeling of case studies. The interdisciplinary approach of this study links deferent aspect and scientific perceptions, providing a comprehensive guide to optimal water resource management and environmental sustainability.

Multi-objective Soft Computing Approaches to Evaluate the Performance of Abrasive Water Jet drilling Parameters on Die Steel

In the current manufacturing methods, improvement in process performance will be resulting in huge benefits to the industries. For the improvement in part or product quality, the machining process must be operating with the optimal parameters, and thus, quality attributes can be produced. It applies to one of the modern machining techniques such as abrasive water jet (AWJ) as the use of this technique is growing rapidly in manufacturing industries for needful applications. Therefore, the present work is proposed to find the optimal level of AWJ parameters such as water jet pressure, stand-off distance, abrasive mass flow rate for drilling die steel with the simultaneous minimization of drilled hole features such as surface roughness, circularity, and cylindricity by using an unusual metaheuristic technique, namely harmony search algorithm (HSA). In addition, taguchi grey relational analysis (TGRA) was performed and their results were compared with the HSA technique. The multiple linear regression models were developed for each response, and the same were used in HSA to determine the optimum parameters for the minimization of responses where the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was employed to convert the multi-objectives into single objective. In this study, the efficacy of HSA technique was demonstrated with the hole features of die steel. The results proved that the HSA technique had outperformed the TGRA based on the overall improvement in AWJ drilling performance on die steel, and the predicted process attributes such as surface roughness of 1.53625 mu m, circularity of 0.04370 mm, and cylindricity of 0.02459 mm were obtained at water jet pressure of 275.4 MPa, stand-off distance of 3.96 mm, and abrasive flow rate as 0.25 kg/min. Also, the percentage deviation error (< 6%) of the predicted hole features of HSA is acceptable and analogous to the experimental results. Hence, it is confirmed that a new metaheuristic alg

Optimal reactive power dispatch considering multi-type FACTS devices using harmony search algorithms

Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) plays an important role for the secure and reliable operation of power systems. The main purpose of ORPD is to find the settings of control variables such as voltage rating of generators, reactive power injection of VAr compensators and tap ratios of the tap setting transformers in order to minimize the total active power losses of the network while satisfying a given set of constraints. In this paper, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers such as Static Var Compensator (SVC), Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifting Transformer (TCPST) are considered in addition with the conventional ORPD control variables for additional active power loss minimization. The whole ORPD problem is considered as a non-linear multi-modal optimization problem. harmony search algorithm is a recent meta-heuristic algorithm which mimics the musician's improvization process. In this paper, two versions of harmony search algorithm, namely Basic harmony search algorithm (HSA) and Improved harmony search algorithm (IHSA) are applied to solve conventional ORPD, as well as ORPD considering FACTS devices. Studies on the proposed algorithm are carried out on IEEE 14 and 57 bus systems. Comparison of simulation results reveals the effectiveness of proposed algorithms over other well-established population-based optimization techniques.

Improving water quality modelling for green roof runoff using Storm Water Management Model

Modelling of green roof is important for assessing its effectiveness as a low impact development (LID) practice. This study evaluated the performance of Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)'s LID Controls for modelling runoff water quality load from a green roof in Portland, Oregon, USA, for possible improvement. Such an attempt has been made rarely, although plenty of studies have evaluated SWMM's LID Controls for predicting green roof runoff. From the evaluation, the applicability of the SWMM for evaluating water quality such as total phosphorous (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) was "not satisfactory". Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) value was 0.27 for TN and -1.45 for TP when using "rain concentration", the only parameter available for water quality simulation of green roof runoff. The applicability was improved to "very good" level for TP with an NSE value of 0.66 when buildup and washoff were made possible by creating an imaginary twin subcatchment of the same size as the original one. However, NSE value for TN was not improved. The value of the work is that it could lead to a more accurate green roof design by minimizing pollutant release with improved prediction technology for TP.

DyEHS: An Integrated Dynamo-EPANET-harmony search Framework for the Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks

The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with intelligent optimization techniques can significantly enhance the design efficiency of water distribution networks (WDNs). Despite this, the dynamic interoperability between BIM platforms and hydraulic simulation tools remains limited. This study introduces DyEHS (Dynamo-EPANET-harmony search), a novel workflow integrating Autodesk Civil 3D, EPANET, and harmony search via Dynamo, to address this gap. DyEHS enables the automated optimization of pipe diameters and network layouts, aiming to minimize capital costs while satisfying hydraulic constraints. In a real-world case study, DyEHS achieved a 15% reduction in the total pipe network costs compared to traditional uniform-diameter designs, while ensuring that all nodes maintained a minimum pressure of 25 m. This quantifiable improvement highlights the tool's potential for practical engineering applications, offering a robust, adaptable, and fully integrated BIM-based solution for WDN design.

Single multiplicative neuron artificial neural networks have different importance than many other artificial neural networks because they do not have complex architecture problem, too many parameters and they need more computation time to use. In single multiplicative neuron artificial neural network, it is assumed that there is a one data generation process for time series. Many time series need an assumption that they have two data generation process or more. Based on this idea, the threshold model structure can be employed in a single multiplicative neuron model artificial neural network for taking into considering data generation processes problem. In this study, a new artificial neural network type is proposed and it is called a threshold single multiplicative neuron artificial neural network. It is assumed that time series have two data generation processes according to the architecture of single multiplicative neuron artificial neural network. Training algorithms are proposed based on harmony search algorithm and particle swarm optimization for threshold single multiplicative neuron artificial neural network. The proposed method is tested by various time series data sets and compared with well-known forecasting methods by considering different error measures. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated by a simulation study.

Highly accurate positioning is essential for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to finish missions in complex underwater environments. Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) has become a common algorithm for underwater navigation due to its low computational complexity and high accuracy. The uncertainty of system noise and observation noise is an important factor that affects the navigation accuracy of AUV. This paper proposes a method to improve the navigation accuracy of AUVs by estimating the system noise and observation noise parameters of the UKF model based on the harmony search (HS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been verified by sensor data assembled by our own AUV. Experimental results show that this method can effectively improve the navigation accuracy of AUV.

Enhanced beetle antenna search: a swarm intelligence algorithm

This study presents a novel enhancement to one of the recent swarm intelligence technique called beetle antenna search (BAS) algorithm. The enhanced algorithm is named (eBAS) and it allows population of beetles as oppose to single beetle as it was the case in the original BAS algorithm. Consideration of population of beetles brings in another capability, which is to avoid getting stuck at local optimum solutions. The other improvements are also suggested in the determination sensing length and step size. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with nine metaheuristic algorithms selected from the literature in addition to the original BAS. The algorithms selected are Bat algorithm (BAT), Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO), Cuckoo’s search (CS), Harmonic search (HS), Differential Evolution (DE), Teaching–Learning Based Optimization (TLBO), and Fire-Fly algorithm (FFA). With each algorithm, 5 optimization examples having continuous and/or discrete variables are solved ranging from 5 design variables’ optimization problem to 23 variables’ problem with several constraints. In addition, 2 real size problems with 10 and 15 design variables are solved using eBAS, ABC, and DE algorithm. Each problem is set to run ten times with different random seed values at each run with all the algorithms to investigate the robustness of the newly developed algorithm. The main performance criteria considered are the best, median, average, and worst results attained, alongside the convergence speed of the average result towards known global minimum solution. It has been shown that eBAS has not only enhanced the original BAS performance but also outperformed the other metaheuristic algorithms at all optimization problems considered. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Computational intelligence models for predicting the effective stress of unsaturated soil

In the design of underground spaces, the value of the effective stress (chi) parameter is important while dealing with unsaturated soils. The estimating procedure might be complex due to the non-linearity of the connection between chi parameter and dependant parameters. As a result, two novel hybrid optimization models are proposed in this paper: relevance vector regression (RVR) optimized using artificial bee colony (ABC) and harmony search (HS) algorithms (RVR-ABC and RVR-HS models). The RVR-HS and RVR-ABC models' prediction abilities were demonstrated using 120 datasets from open-source literatures. In this dataset, characteristics of unsaturated soils such as bubbling pressure, soil-water characteristic curve fitting parameter, saturated volumetric water content, net conning pressure, residual water content, and suction were used as the inputs, while chi parameter was used as the output. The proposed models performances were assessed by comparing them regarding some statistical metrics, e.g., correlation coefficient (R-2). For the RVR-ABC and RVR-HS models, the R2 of 0.86 and 0.89 were attained, respectively. The findings showed that the RVR-ABC and RVR-HS models were effective in predicting the chi parameter. However, the RVR-HS model, outperformed the RVR-ABC model as this issue shows, the HS algorithm contributed significantly to the optimization of the suggested model.

Improved harmony search with general iteration models for engineering design optimization problems

harmony search (HS) algorithm has a strong exploration and exploitation capability based on its unique improvisation. However, little research has been done on its improvisation mechanism. This paper offers a detailed discussion on the HS improvisation mechanism, which aims to state that the improvisation is a generic search framework. To improve the performance of HS, global learning strategy is designed to enhance the global search capability, and modified random selection is used to reduce the possibility of falling into local optimum. Moreover, a new improvement perspective such as the adjustment of iteration model is presented in this paper. Different iteration models such as dimension-to-dimension mode, stochastic multi-dimensional mode, vector mode and matrix mode to explore the optimization potential of HS algorithm are employed. Combining the improved operations, parameter adjustments and the four iteration models, four improved HS variants are proposed to analyze the effectiveness of iteration model on HS algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed HS algorithms can yield significant improved performance. Overall, the paper shows that the HS improvisation framework has a good extensibility and the iteration model has significant impact on the performance of HS.
