Designing a New Radial Basis Function Neural Network by harmony search for Diabetes Diagnosis

Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) have been widely used for classification and function approximation tasks. So, it is worthy to try improving and developing new learning algorithms for RBFNNs in order to get better results. This paper presents a new learning method for RBFNNs. Hence, an improved learning algorithm for center adjustment of RBFNNs using harmony search (HS) algorithm has been proposed. The proposed RBFNN is used for diabetes recognition task. In order to increase the recognition accuracy as well as to reduce the dimensionality of feature vectors, Rough Set Theory (RST) has been applied on Pima Indians Diabetes. Comprehensive experiments have been conducted on Proben1 dataset in order to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed RBFNN. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve higher performance compared to other state-of-the-art in the field.

Implementation of Efficient Intra- and Inter-Zone Routing for Extending Network Consistency in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large amount of limited battery-powered sensor nodes. In general, energy consumption will be a significant concern for WSN owing to irreplaceable battery constraints of sensor nodes. The zone formation approach could be an adequate data aggregation technique which efficiently minimizes the energy consumption by categorizing sensor nodes into zones. However, the main constraints like zone head (ZH) selection, frequent change of ZH, and multi-hop communication from ZH to the sink have a direct impact on the network consistency of WSN. In this paper, a novel efficient intra- and inter-zone routing scheme has been proposed in order to prolong the network consistency of WSN. In the proposed scheme, the hybrid algorithm is established in which harmony search algorithm incorporates with modified moth flame optimization algorithm. This hybrid algorithm provides the appropriate ZH selection for intra-zone routing that reduces the frequent change of ZH in the network. Furthermore, the path balancing in inter-zone routing is acquired through multicriteria-based optimal path routing algorithm. The performance results confirm that the proposed scheme enhances the network consistency compared with an existing scheme.

Analysis of Subway Passenger Flow for a Smarter City: Knowledge Extraction From Seoul Metro's 'Untraceable' Big Data

Timely and efficient analysis of big data collected from various gateways installed in a smart city is an intractable problem and requires immediate priority. Given the stochastic and massive nature of big data, the existing literature often relies on artificial intelligence techniques based on information theory. As a new approach, this paper presents a knowledge extraction method based on an analysis of Seoul Metro's 'untraceable' ridership big data. Without identification information, the untraceable ridership data only shows the hourly accumulation of station entry and exit information. To reconstruct the missing information in the data set, this study proposes a fluid dynamics model and adopts a heuristic genetic algorithm based on optimization theory as the problem solver. The result of our model presents the distribution of the elapsed time defined on an hourly basis taken until a passenger returns to the station they departed from. To validate our model, we acquired subway ridership data with passengers' identification with permission from Seoul Metro. This paper presents two novel aspects of subway ridership, namely the dependency on departure time and the discrepancy between weekend and weekday traffic. Our analytical approach contributes to solving the problem of extracting hidden knowledge from big collection of data missing critical information, e.g., constantly and autonomously gathered data fragments from numerous gateways in smart cities.

A novel power system scheduling based on hydrogen-based micro energy hub

Simultaneous operation of different energy generation and transmission infrastructures is a subject introduced as the concept of energy hub. This subject is highly regarded in microgrids. Integrating different energy sources under the concept of energy hub can improve the system performance as well as its reliability. The present paper is focused on the concept of hydrogen-based micro energy hub (SMEH) with regard to the integrated demand response (IDR) and hydrogen storage system (HSS). The SMEH studied in the present paper consists of different energy sources including the CHP, boiler, wind turbines, electrical energy storage system (ESS), gas storage system (GSS), thermal storage system (TSS), and hydrogen storage system (HSS). Demand response (DR) is introduced for controlling the consumers' heat demand and electrical pattern. Furthermore, the HSS not only can convert the power from renewable energy sources (RESs) into hydrogen (P2H) in the low power price periods, but also can, in turn, supply the hydrogen industry (H2P). The proposed model aims to minimize the energy cost of the whole hydrogen-based system considering the uncertainty of the power price. This optimization is performed by the harmony search (HS) optimization algorithm, which has been improved and developed by means of the local search algorithm. Eventually, the simulation and numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Solar Position Acquisition Method for Polarized Light Navigation Based on ∞ Characteristic Model of Polarized Skylight Pattern

Inspired by the use of polarized information for navigation behaviors in nature, many researchers have carried out a lot of researches on bionic polarized light navigation. Due to the complexity of the atmospheric radiation transmission process, there is a lot of uncertainty for the bionic polarized light navigation method that accurately calculates the polarization information of the polarized skylight pattern pixel by pixel. This paper studies the distribution of the polarized skylight pattern under different weather conditions through a large number of observational experiments. It is found that the distribution of the angle of polarization shows a stable infinity characteristic, which can reflect the macro distribution characteristics and changing laws of the polarized skylight pattern. This paper extracts the infinity characteristic from the polarization angle image, then we establish a model of infinity characteristic to solve the solar position by calculating the feature similarity indexes between the measured infinity characteristic images and Rayleigh infinity characteristic images. And we propose an improved harmony search algorithm to solve the optimal solution of the model. By searching in the Rayleigh infinity characteristic image database, the solution vector corresponding to the Rayleigh infinity characteristic image with the highest feature similarity index is the solar position. In this paper, experiments are performed on measured polarized images under sunny and cloudy weather, and the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A Coordinated Framework of DG Allocation and Operating Strategy in Distribution System for Configuration Management under Varying Loading Patterns

The distributed generation (DG) planning with the varying pattern of the practical load is difficult as it calls for the frequent changes in DG size and system configuration, which is neither feasible nor permissible. Rather such a DG size and a configuration, which can be utilized over a wider load pattern, are more acceptable. This work presents a coordinated approach for DG planning and system reconfiguration. While to operate a particular DG size and the system configuration over a wide range of loading pattern, the configurations are ranked under different probabilistic loading patterns. Based upon the ranking of the new configuration, the energy performance of the coordinated planning is evaluated. Further, the observations from coordinated planning are imposed on coordinated operation using harmony search algorithm (HSA). The proposed approach is tested for single as well as multi-objectives on a 33-node system. A significant improvement in the computational efforts and energy performance of the resulting configuration have been observed where losses have reduced to 81.11 and 53.77 kW with single DG and multi-DG allocation respectively.

Experimental Evaluation for Improving Multiple Quality Characteristics of Drilled Holes: A Case Study on Drilling of Ti6Al4V

Titanium alloys find increased applications in many engineering fields such as bio-medical, aerospace, electronics and automobile industries due to their superior physical properties such as high specific strength, weight to strength ratio, corrosive resistant and toughness. Low thermal conductivity of titanium alloys makes it difficult to machine since high cutting temperature is generated at tool work piece interface. As it is highly chemically reactive at high temperature, work piece is adhered to the tool surface. The present work aims at investigating the effect of drilling process parameters viz. spindle speed, drill bit diameter and feed rate on machining performance measures such as burr height at entry and exit, surface roughness and circularity at entry and exit. In order to optimize all the performance measures simultaneously, the present investigation utilizes a hybrid approach known as superiority and inferiority ranking method combined with technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (SIR-TOPSIS) to convert these characteristics into single equivalent characteristic (r-flow). A statistically valid empirical relationship is developed for r-flow in terms of machining parameters using nonlinear regression technique. The study aims at attaining optimal parametric setting that maximizes r-flow. To optimize r-flow, an improved version of meta-heuristic evolutionary algorithm known as harmony search (HS) algorithm is implemented. The confirmatory experiment suggests the robustness of the methodology in optimizing the drilling operation.

A Covering Tour Approach for Disaster Relief Locating and Routing with Fuzzy Demand

Optimizing the distribution and allocation of resources among individuals is one of the most important measures to be taken at the time of crisis. Time, as a vital factor, has a significant impact on the increase in the number of people rescued by relief activities. This paper presents an allocation and routing model for relief vehicles in the areas affected by a disaster. It uses a covering tour approach to reduce response time. Moreover, because determining the exact amount of demand for essential goods in the event of a disaster is very difficult and even impossible in some cases, the demand parameter is considered as a fuzzy parameter in this model. Accordingly, an optimization method is designed based on credibility theory, and a harmony search algorithm with random simulation is developed. Finally, the efficiency of the harmony search algorithm is analyzed by comparing the CPLEX solver and GRASP algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs well over a short operating time.

Hybrid PSO-HSA and PSO-GA algorithm for 3D path planning in autonomous UAVs

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a quintessential example of automation in the field of avionics. UAVs provide a platform for performing a wide variety of tasks, but in each case the concept of path planning plays an integral role. It helps to generate a pathway free of obstacles, having minimum length leading to lesser fuel consumption, lesser traversal time and helps in steering the aircraft and its corresponding antenna power signature safely around the hostile antenna to avoid detection. To optimize path planning to incorporate all the above-mentioned constraints, this paper presents two new hybrid algorithms particle swarm optimization (PSO) with harmony search algorithm and PSO with genetic algorithm. The hybrid algorithms perform both an exploratory and exploitative search, unlike the existing algorithms which are biased, towards either an exploitative search or an exploratory search. Furthermore, the hybrid algorithms are compared to the existing optimization algorithms and in all cases the hybrid algorithms give a minimum of 7% better result against PSO with up to a 40% better result against Invasive Weed optimization algorithm for a fixed computational time, suggesting better real-time applications.

Considering stockers in reentrant hybrid flow shop scheduling with limited buffer capacity

Diversification of products has increased the involvement of reentrant manufacturing processes, in which a job returns multiple times to a machine at the preceding workflow stage to continue the manufacturing process. Reentrant flow shop manufacturing can substantially improve manufacturing efficiency when scheduled properly. In practice, advanced manufacturing companies (e.g., semiconductor foundries) have introduced automated material handling system (AMHS), including stockers that serve as centralized inventory buffer space for temporarily storing the inventories owing to limited buffer capacity of each machine. However, no previous studies on reentrant flow shop scheduling have considered the impact of limited buffer capacity or stockers on scheduling efficiency. Consequently, this study investigated the application of stockers in solving the reentrant hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with limited buffer capacity. With the objective of optimizing the makespan and mean flowtime of a schedule, this problem is NP-hard because it generalizes the flow shop problem. Therefore, this study developed a hybrid harmony search and genetic algorithm (HHSGA) for the problem, in which limited buffer capacity and stockers cause solution decoding to be non-trivial. Experimental comparison on scheduling problems with different numbers of jobs showed that the HHSGA performed better than conventional algorithms. Moreover, among three manufacturing conditions (i.e., with buffers and stockers, with buffers only, and with stockers only), the results indicated that the condition using inventory buffers and stockers was more beneficial.
