The distributed generation-based DC microgrid are destined to achieve accurate current sharing for stable operation of Microgrid. Nevertheless, the decentralized approach of droop control method is suitable, it is affected by the voltage droop due to the line impedance drop. The paper proposes optimization of the droop control parameters such that the error due to the voltage drop and current sharing error is minimized. Among different metaheuristic algorithm, harmony search algorithm is utilized for optimization problem due to its single memory management. In this paper, harmony search algorithm-based optimization of droop parameters for accurate sharing is implemented. The current research work also outworths a comparative analysis of the optimization carried out with particle swarm optimization and harmony search algorithm. The effectiveness of the optimized droop parameters is analyzed by implementing the parallel DC system in Matlab Simulink environment.

In this article, a new approach is proposed to optimize conductor size selection in radial distribution network planning for the purpose of minimization of real power loss and enhancement of voltage profile. The objective function is modeled as a problem that minimizes the sum of capital investment and capitalized energy loss cost. Voltage constraints and the maximum current carrying capacity of the conductors are also considered in the evaluation of the objective function. The harmony search algorithm with a differential operator is used to solve the optimal conductor size selection problem and to determine the size and type of the conductors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulations on 16- and 85-bus systems, and the results obtained are encouraging.

Development of a two-stage gene selection method that incorporates a novel hybrid approach using the cuckcio optimization algorithm and harmony search for cancer classification

For each cancer type, only a few genes are informative. Due to the so-called 'curse of dimensionality' problem, the gene selection task remains a challenge. To overcome this problem, we propose a two stage gene selection method called MRMR-COA-HS. In the first stage, the minimum redundancy and maximum relevance (MRMR) feature selection is used to select a subset of relevant genes. The selected genes are then fed into a wrapper setup that combines a new algorithm, COA-HS, using the support vector machine as a classifier. The method was applied to four microarray datasets, and the performance was assessed by the leave one out cross-validation method. Comparative performance assessment of the proposed method with other evolutionary algorithms suggested that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms other methods in selecting a fewer number of genes while maintaining the highest classification accuracy. The functions of the selected genes were further investigated, and it was confirmed that the selected genes are biologically relevant to each cancer type. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Damage in structural systems induced by vibrations, alternating load cycles, temperature changes, corrosion, etc., constitute a serious technical problem. Smart methods of control and structural health monitoring (SHM) for large structures are, therefore, highly needed. In certain structural applications, moreover, a lack of access to the damaged area imposes an additional constraint on damage identification procedures. One method that may fulfill those requirements is dynamic nondestructive testing, which consists of monitoring changes in the structure's natural frequencies, vibration modes and damping. In this paper, a new approach for vibration-based (SHM) procedures is presented, in an ambient vibration context;this method combines a time domain modal identification technique (SSI) with the evolutionary harmony search algorithm. A series of numerical examples with different damage scenarios and noise levels have been carried out under impact and ambient vibration. Thereafter, an experimental study of three cantilever beams with several different damage scenarios is conducted and the proposed methodology has shown potential for use in the damage diagnosis assessment of the remaining structural life. A novel grouping harmony search algorithm for the multiple-type access node location problem

In this paper we present a novel grouping harmony search algorithm for the Access Node Location Problem (ANLP) with different types of concentrators. The ANLP is a NP-hard problem where a set of distributed terminals, with distinct rate demands, must be assigned to a variable number of concentrators subject to capacity constraints. We consider the possibility of choosing between different concentrator models is given in order to provide service demand at different cost. The ANLP is relevant in communication networks design, and has been considered before within the design of MPLS networks, for example. The approach we propose to tackle the ANLP problem consists of a hybrid Grouping harmony search (GHS) algorithm with a local search method and a technique for repairing unfeasible solutions. Moreover, the presented scheme also includes the adaptation of the GHS to a differential scheme, where each proposed harmony is obtained from the same harmony in the previous iteration. This differential scheme is perfectly adapted to the specifications of the ANLP problem, as it utilizes the grouping concept based on the proximity between nodes, instead of being only based on the grouping concept. This allows for a higher efficiency on the searching process of the algorithm. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations in synthetic instances show that this proposal provides faster convergence rate, less computational complexity and better statistical performance than alternative algorithms for the ANLP, such as grouping genetic algorithms, specially when the size of the scenario increases. We also include practical results for the application of GHS to a real wireless network deployment problem in Bizkaia, northern Spain. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Forecasting Annual Power Generation Using a harmony search algorithm-Based Joint Parameters Optimization Combination Model

Accurate power generation forecasting provides the basis of decision making for electric power industry development plans, energy conservation and environmental protection. Since the power generation time series are rarely purely linear or nonlinear, no single forecasting model can identify the true data trends exactly in all situations. To combine forecasts from different models can reduce the model selection risk and effectively improve accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel technique called the harmony search (HS) algorithm-based joint parameters optimization combination model. In this model, the single forecasting model adopts power function form with unfixed exponential parameters. The exponential parameters of the single model and the combination weights are called joint parameters which are optimized by the HS algorithm by optimizing the objective function. Real power generation time series data sets of China, Japan, Russian Federation and India were used as samples to examine the forecasting accuracy of the presented model. The forecasting performance was compared with four single models and four combination models, respectively. The MAPE of our presented model is the lowest, which shows that the proposed model outperforms other comparative ones. Especially, the proposed combination model could better fit significant turning points of power generation time series. We can conclude that the proposed model can obviously improve forecasting accuracy and it can treat nonlinear time series with fluctuations better than other single models or combination models.

Duration based reconfiguration of electric distribution networks using dynamic programming and harmony search algorithm

Feeder reconfiguration is one of the most important tasks for loss reduction and reliability improvement in distribution networks. Most of studies so far have investigated reconfiguration problem as a static problem considering fixed level of loads. This assumptions lead to suboptimal solution because of time-varying nature of loads in distribution networks. The switching operation should be cost effective and the reconfiguration scheme should balance the benefits in system loss reduction and reliability improvement against the costs of switching. Moreover, this is a dynamic problem and switching operations of time intervals over a year are not independent. This paper presents a method to determine annual feeder reconfiguration scheme considering switching costs and time-varying variables such as load profiles. In the first stage of the proposed method, to obtain effective configurations, optimal configuration for each day of year is determined independently using harmony search algorithm (HSA) and graph theory. After determination of effective configurations for the network, in the second stage, year is divided into multi equal periods and considering loss cost, interruption cost and also switching cost from a configuration to another configuration, dynamic programming algorithm (DPA) is used to find the optimum annual reconfiguration scheme. The proposed method has been tested on 95-bus distribution network and the obtained results denote that to have an optimum solution it is necessary to compare operation costs dynamically. This paper proposes a variant of harmony search algorithm named as dispersed harmony search (DHS) and its application to extract the drain current (DC) and small signal model parameters of Galium Arsenide (GaAs) metal extended semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET). DHS algorithm is used to minimize the difference between measured and modeled (i) drain current to extract the DC model parameters and (ii) S-parameters to extract the small signal model parameters. The S-parameters are measured in the frequency range of 500 MHz to 25 GHz with a step of 500 MHz. The measured data are obtained from a fabricated MESFET of gate length 0.7 mu m and gate width of 600 mu m (4 x 150). The performance of DHS algorithm is compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm in terms of quality of solution and execution time to extract the model parameters. Comparison results reveal that the DHS algorithm has better convergence speed and also a robust technique for model parameter extraction compared with PSO and ABC algorithms.

Training HMM Structure and Parameters with Genetic algorithm and harmony search algorithm

In this paper, we utilize training strategy of hidden Markov model (HMM) to use in versatile issues such as classification of time-series sequential data such as electric transient disturbance problem in power system. For this, an automatic means of optimizing HMMs would be highly desirable, but it raises important issues: model interpretation and complexity control. With this in mind, we explore the possibility of using genetic algorithm (GA) and harmony search (HS) algorithm for optimizing the HMM. GA is flexible to allow incorporating other methods, such as Baum-Welch, within their cycle. Furthermore, operators that alter the structure of HMMs can be designed to simple structures. HS algorithm with parameter-setting free technique is proper for optimizing the parameters of HMM. HS algorithm is flexible so as to allow the elimination of requiring tedious parameter assigning efforts. In this paper, a sequential data analysis simulation is illustrated, and the optimized-HMMs are evaluated. The optimized HMM was capable of classifying a sequential data set for testing compared with the normal HMM.

Economic heat and power dispatch in modern power system harmony search algorithm versus analytical solution

A comparative meta-heuristic and mathematical optimization approach is addressed in this paper to illustrate the weakness and strength of these optimization techniques in solving a large-scale optimization problem. harmony search algorithm (HSA) is selected as a meta-heuristic and combined CIPLEX with MINOS under Generalized Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) as mathematical ones. Combined Heat and Power Economic Dispatch (CHP-EDC) is considered in this paper as an aforementioned large-scale optimization task which has a convex nonlinear optimization model. Three types of thermal units are considered co-generation units, electrical only and heat-only units. Two adopted case studies are addressed to compare the meta-heuristic and mathematically optimization algorithm results and a well-defined large-scale case study also presented to illustrate the feasibility and tractability of proposed HSA.
