The impact of demand response programs on UPFC placement

Demand response (DR) and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can be effectively used for congestion management in power transmission systems. However, demand response program (DRP) implementation can itself affect the optimum location of FACTS devices, which is one of the main issues in power system planning. This paper investigates the impact of DRPs on unified power flow controller (UPFC) placement. The harmony search algorithm is employed to determine the optimum locations and parameter setting of UPFC in a long-term framework. The optimization problem is solved with different objectives including generation and congestion cost reduction, as well as loss reduction. In this paper, the proposed approach is analyzed using 5 different cases, which are defined in such a way that they demonstrate the impact of DRPs on the UPFC placement problem. The IEEE reliability test system is used as an illustrative example to demonstrate the necessity of considering DRPs for UPFC placement.

Internet of Things enabled smart grid (SG) is one of the most advanced technologies, which plays a key role in maintaining a balance between demand and supply by implementing demand response (DR) program. In SG, the main focus of the researchers is on home energy management (HEM) system, which is called demand side management. Appliance scheduling is an integral part of HEM system as it manages energy demand according to supply, by automatically controlling the appliances and shifting the load from peak to off peak hours. In this paper, the comparative performance of HEM controller embedded with heuristic algorithms, such as harmony search algorithm, enhanced differential evolution, and harmony search differential evolution, is evaluated. The integration of renewable energy source (RES) in SG makes the performance of HEM system more efficient. The electricity consumption in peak hours usually creates peaks and increases the cost but integration of RES makes the electricity consumer able to use the appliances in the peak hours. We formulate our problem using multiple knapsack theory that the maximum capacity of the consumer of electricity must be in the range, which is bearable for consumer with respect to electricity bill. Feasible regions are computed to validate the formulated problem. Finally, simulation of the proposed techniques is conducted in MATLAB to validate the performance of proposed scheduling algorithms in terms of cost, peak-to-average ratio, and waiting time minimization.

HSCA: a novel harmony search based efficient clustering in heterogeneous WSNs

Clustering objective reasons scalability, fault tolerance, data aggregation or fusion, load balancing of cluster heads, stabilized network topology, maximal network lifetime, increased connectivity, reduced routing delay, collision avoidance and utilizing sleeping schemes in wireless sensor networks. Load balanced clustering effectively organize the network into a connected hierarchy. Clustering is a discrete problem that can have more than one solution under different operating constraints. In this scenario, meta-heuristic algorithms are found suitable because they give set of solutions in acceptable time constraints. In the literature, several analytical and meta-heuristic approaches have been developed for load balanced clustering. In this paper, a novel harmony search based energy efficient load balanced clustering algorithm is presented and it is tested on a large sample network. Results demonstrated that the proposed approach has faster convergence and gives reliable and efficient load balanced clustering as compared to conventional harmony search algorithm (HSA) and several other methods in the literature. Moreover, the robustness of the proposed approach is also verified for different cases of fixed and variable parameters of HSA.

In this paper, the update process of harmony search (HS) algorithm is modified to improve its concept of diversity. The update process in HS is based on a greedy mechanism in which the new harmony solution, created in each generation, replaces the worst individual in the population, if better. This greedy process could be improved with other updates mechanisms in order to control the diversity perfectly. Three versions of HS have been proposed: (1) Natural Proportional HS;(2) Natural Tournament HS;(3) Natural Rank HS. These three HS versions employed the natural selection principle of the "survival of the fittest". Instead of replacing the worst individual in population, any individual can be replaced based on certain criteria. Four versions of economic loading dispatch (ELD) problems with valve point have been used to measure the effect of the newly proposed HS versions. The results show that the new HS versions are very promising for ELD domain. This claim is proved based on the comparative evaluation process where the new HS versions are able to excel the state-of-the-art methods in almost ELD problems used.

This paper presents a discrete harmony search(DHS) algorithm for solving an n-job,m-machine lot-streaming flowshop scheduling problem(LFSP) with equal-size sublots, the objective is to minimize the total flow time. In the proposed DHS algorithm. The discrete job permutation without any conversion is used in the proposed DHS algorithm. To search for the best sequence,the DHS algorithm uses an effective initialization approach and a novel improvisation strategy. At the same time, an effective local search is embedded. Computational results demonstrate that the proposed DHS algorithm is very effectiveness for the lot-streaming flowshop scheduling problem.

Multi-strategy learning and deep harmony memory improvisation for self-organizing neurons

This study proposes a concept of representation learning by implementing multi-strategy deep learning harmony memory improvisation for selecting the best harmony of self-organizing neurons. Representation learning is a set of methods that allows a machine to be fed with raw data and to automatically discover the representations needed for detection or classification. In our study, the deep multi-strategy learning involves the convolution of the self-organizing neurons with deep harmony memories improvisation in self-organizing and representation of map learning. The convolution of self-organizing neurons and harmony memory optimize the representation neurons' weights by generating the optimal best matching unit which is represented as fitness function of f1 (x) and f2 (x). While f1 g f 1 (x) and f2 g f 2 (x) represent the New harmony fitness function. The best fitness function, fbest (x) is selected based on the f1 (x) and f2 (x) performance which will be later stored in the harmony memory vector. The position vector of a particle is subjected to the Newtonian mechanics constant acceleration during the interval t. The search space of self-organizing map with Newton-based particle swarm algorithm particles depends on the width area, sa(t) of organizing neurons lattice structure. Our proposed methods are experimented on various biomedical datasets. The findings indicate that the proposed methods provide better quantization error for clustering and good classification accuracy with statistical measurement validations.

This paper is concerned with robust pole assignment optimization for synthesizing feedback control systems via state feedback or observer-based output feedback in specified union regions using the harmony search algorithm. By using exact pole placement theory and the harmony search algorithm, robust pole assignment for linear discrete-time systems or linear continuous-time systems in union regions can be converted into a global dynamical optimization problem. The robust measured indices are derived for robust union region stability constraints and a robust H performance. For the nonlinear, robust measured indices, a set of dynamic poles and the corresponding feedback controllers can be obtained by global dynamic optimization based on the harmony search algorithm and the idea of robust exact pole assignment. One key merit of the proposed approach is that the radius or the position of the sub-regions can be arbitrarily specified according to the transient performance request. Furthermore, the eigenstructure of the closed-loop system matrix can be optimized with better robustness for the proposed approach. Finally, the simulation results for a discrete-time system and a continuous-time system demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

A novel optimized cyclic part feeding system with line-integrated supermarkets

To unify the merits of traditional in-plant parts logistics alternatives such as line stocking and kitting, the concept of line-integrated supermarkets is introduced to improve the part feeding in mixed-model assembly lines. First, the highly interdependent optimization problems of assigning stations and scheduling logistics operators are described, and mathematical models are established with the aim to minimize the fleet size of logistics operators and unit part delivery time as well. Together with particular theorems and lemmas, a nested dynamic programming is presented to obtain global optimum for small-sized instances while a modified harmony search algorithm is constructed for medium- or large-sized instances. Benefit from repeatedly dividing and reconstructing the harmony memory, the computation speed is significantly enhanced. Meanwhile, crossover and mutation operations effectively improve the diversity of solutions to overcome deficiencies such as limited search depth and tendencies to trapping into local optimum. Finally, experimental results validate that the proposed algorithm is of competitive performance in effectiveness and efficiency compared to some other basic or modified meta-heuristics.

Robust optimization framework for dynamic distributed energy resources planning in distribution networks

This study relies on a dynamic reliability-based model for distributed energy resources (DER) planning in electric energy distribution networks (EEDN) with the aim of maximizing the profit of EEDN companies by increasing income and reducing costs. Load uncertainty is considered in the proposed planning model and the robust optimization (RO) approach is employed to cope with the uncertainty. The developed methodology is illustrated using real-world voltage-dependent load models, including residential, commercial and industrial types. These load models are used in evaluating the reliability cost and energy selling for customers. The reliability cost is calculated based on the total unsupplied load after an outage. Furthermore, a new modified harmony search algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated robust dynamic DER planning problem. The solution of the proposed optimization model provides the size, location, and power factor of DER. Furthermore, the need for transformers or lines upgrades and the best year for DER installation are other decision variables determined by the model. The effectiveness and capability of the developed model have been demonstrated with the aid of a case study based on a typical EEDN. The obtained results indicate that installing DER in EEDNs can relieve congestion on feeders;therefore, it can mitigate or defer upgrade investment. Moreover, if carefully planned, other benefits of DER integration such as reliability improvement and energy loss reduction can be achieved.

This paper proposes the use of series FACTS devices to relieve congestion and enhance the security in restructured power system. harmony search algorithm as a novel heuristic algorithm is employed for optimal locating and sizing of series FACTS devices. In order to reduce the solution space and to pinpoint the lines which are more suitable for FACTS device placement line outage sensitivity factors is employed. Two different objective functions are considered in the optimization problem, the first one is the total congestion cost and the other is total generation cost. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show its efficiency, the simulations are carried out on IEEE 14-bus test system. The results of the proposed method are compared with those obtained by particle swarm optimization and with those obtained by congestion rent contribution method. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
