A novel optimization approach for reinforced concrete (RC) biaxially loaded columns is proposed. Since there are several design constraints and influences, a new computation methodology using iterative analyses for several stages is proposed. In the proposed methodology random iterations are combined with music inspired metaheuristic algorithm called harmonysearch by modifying the classical rules of the employed algorithm for the problem. Differently from previous approaches, a detailed and practical optimum reinforcement design is done in addition to optimization of dimensions. The main objective of the optimization is the total material cost and the optimization is important for RC members since steel and concrete are very different materials in cost and properties. The methodology was applied for 12 cases of flexural moment combinations. Also, the optimum results are found by using 3 different axial forces for all cases. According to the results, the proposed method is effective to find a detailed optimum result with different number of bars and various sizes which can be only found by 2000 trial of an engineer. Thus, the cost economy is provided by using optimum bars with different sizes.

The classical harmonysearch (HS) algorithm has been improved. The algorithm effectively prevents it from becoming trapped by a local optimal solution. It allows to be used to deale the shortest-path issue. To solve the shortest route problem, we improved the classical harmonyalgorithm and seek the optimal solution in the global scope. Second, by the application of the dynamic priority value encoding scheme, we constructed the path based on the priority value of correspondent nodes of variables in the harmonic vector. Through the iterative update of the harmony memory banks, we finally obtained the shortest route. Finally the simulation experiments show us that the proposed algorithm is better than PSO algorithm and HS algorithm on the performance.

This brief proposes hybrid stable adaptive fuzzy controller design procedures utilizing the conventional Lyapunov theory and, the relatively newly devised harmonysearch (HS) algorithm-based stochastic approach. The objective is to design a self-adaptive fuzzy controller, optimizing both its structures and free parameters, such that the designed controller can guarantee desired stability and simultaneously it can provide satisfactory performance with a high degree of automation in the design process. Two different variants of the hybrid controller are proposed in this work. These variants are implemented for a benchmark simulation case study and real-life experimentation. The results obtained demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.

In this study, cost optimization of a composite floor system is performed utilizing the harmony search algorithm and an improved harmony search algorithm. These algorithms imitate the musical performance process that takes place when a musician searches for a better state of harmony, similar to the optimum design process which looks for the optimum solution. A composite floor system is designed by the LRFD-AISC method, using a unit consisting of a reinforced concrete slab and steel beams. The objective function is considered as the cost of the structure, which is minimized subjected to serviceability and strength requirements. In this paper, the uncertain scheduling problem of hot strip mill (HSM) is studied, in which the uncertainty of slab supply is considered. We propose a prediction based two-layered scheduling approach (PTLSA) which contains an offline optimization layer and an online adjustment layer. In the offline optimization layer, the arrival probability of each slab group is first predicted by the relevance vector machine (RVM), and then a hybrid harmonysearch (HHS) algorithm is proposed to generate a predictive rolling round. In the online adjustment layer, if some slab cannot arrive during the execution of the predictive rolling round, an online adjustment rule is designed to select another slab belonging to the same group in order to replace the one cannot arrive. Computational results on industrial data have demonstrated the effectiveness of PTLSA under the uncertain production environment.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of death in women when compared to all other cancers. This cancer has become the most hazardous types of cancer among women in the world. Early detection of breast cancer is essential in reducing life losses. In this paper some metaheuristic optimization algorithms was used to find the parameters of the Fuzzy-ART. Fuzzy-ART is not so strong to deal with above data. However, its performance is significantly improved by using evolutionary optimization methods. These hybrid classification techniques were tested on a training data set provided by the Wisconsin dataset for breast cancer. Results showed that the proposed harmonysearch (HS) algorithm provides better result with less time and less number of steps than genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) in the same conditions. As seen in this research, evolutionary HS algorithm had a higher convergence ability to obtain optimal solution too. The best performance obtained from this algorithm is 97.80% for accuracy and 98.92% for specificity.

This paper proposes an efficient harmonysearch (HS) algorithm for determining the material parameters of a fatigue cracking model based on Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT). APT is preferred over typical laboratory experiments and testing because APT can simulate field pavement performance. The main advantage of the HS heuristic algorithm is its ability to find the best global solution of a nonlinear complex function based on a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search that requires derivative information. Finally, this paper develops a fatigue cracking model according to the hypothesis of cumulative damage for the asphalt concrete layer and compares APT to existing models. In comparison with existing models, the APT model is found to have the capability of simulating the field performance because it considers the wandering effect, resulting in longer fatigue cracking life than those life computed by the models from existing lab experiments.

As a fast and high-quality tagger algorithm is a crucial task in natural language processing, this paper presents novel language-independent algorithms based on harmonysearch (HS) optimization method for handling the part-of-speech (PoS) tagging problem. The first proposed algorithm is a framework for applying HS to PoS-tagging which is called HSTAGger. By modifying HS algorithm and proposing more efficient objective functions, two improved versions of the HSTAGger are also introduced. In addition, a novel class of problematic words called erroneous as well as a method of handling them is proposed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, we have applied them on standard annotated corpus and compare them with other evolutionary-based and classical PoS-tagging approaches. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithms outperform the other taggers previously presented in the literature in terms of average precision.
