Emerging practical deployments for the Internet of Things (IoT) trigger a need to integrate and inter-operate a variety of heterogenous networks to realize real business values. Several applications require the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSN), WiFi, and Radio Frequency Identifiers (RFID) into one single network to fulfil business requirements. As most of such deployments are characterized as being large-scale and heterogeneous, special algorithms and techniques are needed in order to deal with data collection, processing, and transmission in such networks. Results reported in the literature confirm that clustering techniques can be very efficient in dealing with routing in large-scale networks. However;due to the heterogeneity of IoT networks, the use of conventional clustering techniques may not result in an efficient clustering. Accordingly, in this paper, we attempt to address this problem by studying the use of evolutionary clustering algorithms in integrated WSN-RFID networks. In particular, the performance of two evolutionary algorithms;namely the Genetic algorithms (GA) and the harmonysearch (HS), is analyzed and compared. It is shown that, the GA outperforms the HS significantly in the cluster formation process for integrated WSN-RFID networks.

In this paper, an evolutionary algorithm is applied to tackle Intelligent Curriculum Sequencing issue. The purpose is to align educational technology, for instance, curriculum sequence to: students' characteristics and subject-matter coherence. The algorithm considers both technical and pedagogical point of view. Results show that the proposed Evolutionary Computation searchalgorithm could find optimal learning sequences, under a set of constraints, within a reasonable amount of iterations.

This work investigates the problem of extending the lifetime of dynamic WSNs with energy-harvesting (EH) sensors to enhancing the total WSN lifetime. This problem is modeled as finding the maximal number of covers each of which can cover all targets to be monitored. This paper presents a harmony search algorithm (HSA) to solve unit commitment (UC) problem. HSA was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony, just as the optimization process seeks to find a global solution that is determined by an objective function. HSA can be used to optimize a non-convex optimization problem with both continuous and discrete variables. In this paper it is shown that HSA, as a heuristic optimization algorithm, may solve power system scheduling problem in a better fashion in comparison with the other evolutionary searchalgorithm that are implemented in such complicated issue. Two case studies are conducted to facilitate the effectiveness of the proposed method. One is a conventional 10-unit test system and its multiples while the other is a 26-unit system, both of which are with a 24-h scheduling horizon. Comparison of the obtained results with other approaches addressed in the literature shows the effectiveness and fastness of the proposed method.

In this article a novel approach to visual tracking called the harmony filter is presented. It is based on the harmony search algorithm, a derivative free meta-heuristic optimisation algorithm inspired by the way musicians improvise new harmonies. The harmony filter models the target as a colour histogram and searches for the best estimated target location using the Bhattacharyya coefficient as a fitness metric. Experimental results show that the harmony filter can robustly track an arbitrary target in challenging conditions. We compare the speed and accuracy of the harmony filter with other popular tracking algorithms including the particle filter and the unscented Kalman filter. Experimental results show the harmony filter to be faster and more accurate than both the particle filter and the unscented Kalman filter. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Penicillin fermentation is an important part of microbial fermentation. Due to the existence of error date in the independent variables and dependent variables of the penicillin fermentation sample data, the accuracy of the model of penicillin fermentation is affected. In this paper, an amended harmonysearch (AHS) algorithm is developed to adjust the hyper-parameters of least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) in order to build penicillin fermentation process model with prediction accuracy. The AHS algorithm is investigated by unconstrained benchmark functions with different characteristics. Compared with other several optimization approaches, AHS demonstrates a better performance. Moreover, using the simulation data from the PenSim simulation platform to validate the effectiveness of the penicillin fermentation process modeling, experiment results show that the penicillin fermentation process modeling based on the tuned LS-SVM by AHS possesses robustness and generalization ability.

A multiband power system stabilizer tuning method, in which objective is to enhance the damping of the rotor oscillations and system stability is proposed in this paper. This tuning approach is based on an efficient searchalgorithm known as harmony search algorithm. Robust design problem of PSS4B is considered as an optimization problem with nonlinear simulation based objective function. A single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system is evaluated under large range of loading conditions and disturbances for performance investigation of the proposed design. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of designed PSS4B stabilizers, time domain simulations are carried out for SMIB system. Superiority of the proposed PSS4B design is proved by comparative study of transient responses with existing model of PSS4B.

This paper presents an improved harmony search algorithm for the optimal reactive/voltage control problem. Optimal reactive/voltage control is a mixed integer, nonlinear optimization problem which includes both continuous and discrete control variables. The proposed algorithm is used to find the settings of control variables such as generator voltages, tap positions of tap changing transformers and the amount of reactive compensation devices to optimize a certain objective. The objectives are power transmission loss, voltage stability and voltage profile which are optimized separately. In the presented method, the inequality constraints are handled by penalty coefficients. The study is implemented on the IEEE 30 Bus system and the results are compared with other evolutionary programs such as harmony search algorithm (HSA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO).
