This paper presents a novel approach for the development of compact 360 degrees scanning antennas. The proposed antenna represents a cylindrical end-fire antenna array designed for 57-71GHz frequency range. In combination with an advanced approach of non-galvanic interconnection, this antenna provides a hemispherical coverage using a minimum number of active RF channels with no additional switching components. This is strongly required, for example, for AR Glasses and can be used in other devices, including embedded in the vehicle, operated in 5G, Beyond 5G, WiGig and 6G. Concept is successfully verified in the experiments.

A Compact hemispherical Beam-coverage Phased Array Antenna Unit for 5G mm-Wave Applications

A compact low-profile phased array antenna unit with unidirectional hemispherical beam-coverage for 5G mm-wave applications is proposed in this paper. A four-subarray configuration is used for the proposed structure to achieve unidirectional hemispherical coverage in the boresight direction normal to the substrate. An artificial magnetic conductor (AMC)-backed slot antenna array with an optimal separation distance of 1.9 mm (= 0.31 lambda at 28 GHz) is proposed as a subarray. The proposed antenna has increased H-plane beamwidth with the measured peak gain of 11.62 dBi and provides the desired wide inclined beam pattern in the elevation plane. The proposed antenna also offers steered beams over the range within +/- 45 degrees in the azimuth plane. The hemispherical-coverage, phased array antenna unit composed of the four designed subarrays has overall dimensions of 80.8 mmx80.8 mmx2.4 mm. The coverage efficiencies of the proposed phased array antenna unit are 0.82, 0.71, and 0.61 for threshold gains of 5 dBi, 8 dBi, and 10 dBi, respectively, where the maximum solid angle is 2 pi steradians.

In this communication, a circularly polarized (CP) antenna is proposed for satellite communication applications. The proposed antenna consists of two parts. One part is in-phase-fed folded monopoles with omnidirectional CP radiation pattern, and the other part is sequential-fed L-shaped monopoles with broadside CP radiation pattern. By combining the two parts as a pattern diversity antenna, upper hemispherical coverage with left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) is achieved in a small volume of 0.38 lambda x 0.38 lambda x 0.07 lambda (lambda is the free-space wavelength). A prototype of the proposed antenna operating at 1.575 GHz has been built and tested. The measured overlapping bandwidth for both the two patterns with 10-dB impedance bandwidth and 3-dB axial-ratio (AR) is 6.7% (1.515-1.62 GHz), also with high port isolation. In addition, the AR and gain coverage over the upper hemisphere is discussed in detail.

A flexible hemispherical coverage array antenna based on multi-planar arrays is proposed to meet the growing demands for multi-target TT&C. The advantages and disadvantages of multi-planar arrays and dome phased in engineering implement are compared. Meanwhile, the influence of different number of plane arrays on antenna pattern is analyzed. For the purpose of interference suppression a novel beamforming method by adding constraint conditions is analyzed to enhance the performance of antenna for TT&C system. Considering the influence of occultation effect on the antenna performance, an effective occultation algorithm is presented. Firstly, the faces in bright area are projected on the plane that is perpendicular with the direction of receiving wave. Secondly, adopting the principle of line segment intersection, the intersect relationship of projective planes is determined. Finally, the facets shadowing relationship is judged by the overlapping and depth-of-view of facets along the receiving wave direction. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the antenna has approximate uniform gain beampattern in different steered angle and the occultation algorithm is feasible and effective.

A Review of Multibeam Phased Array Antennas as LEO Satellite Constellation Ground Station

Small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) are typically organized as a satellite constellation. The satellite number of a LEO satellite constellation would be several hundred or even tens of thousands to realize a fully global coverage. This imposes a big challenge on ground station for satellite ordinary management and control operation. Phased array antennas are considered as attractive candidates for future satellite ground station. The primary reason is that phased array antennas can produce numbers of beams by the beamforming network thus support multiple satellites simultaneously. This paper aims to provide a tutorial-like review on phased array antennas as satellite ground station. The advantages of phased array antennas for this application are summarized by comparing them with traditional reflector antennas. Several array geometries for realizing the hemispherical coverage required for satellite tracking are presented. System architecture are given, and some considerations for engineering practice about phased array antenna based satellite ground station are also discussed.

Low-profile Hybrid-mode Antenna Providing Near-hemispherical Field-of-view coverage

The hybrid-mode model (HMM) combining monopole and dipole radiation modes can provide near-hemispherical coverage but has a high profile. To reduce the profile of HMM, a modified HMM is presented in this paper using a dipole radiator and a magnetic current loop radiator. Based on the modified model, a low-profile on-board antenna is proposed. When the side length of the ground is infinite, the 3-dB beamwidths in the xz plane and yz plane of the proposed antenna are both 180 degrees. When the side length of the ground is finite, the proposed antenna can provide a near-hemispherical field-of-view coverage. The design example demonstrates the practicability of the modified HMM and the proposed antenna can be used in wide-angle scanning arrays and rich-multipath communication systems.
