A comprehensive review of heuristic optimization algorithms for optimal combined heat and power dispatch from economic and environmental perspectives

Combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) aims to minimize the operational cost of heat and power units satisfying several equality and inequality operational and power network constraints. The CHPED should be handled considering valve-point loading impact of the conventional thermal plants, power transmission losses of the system, generation capacity limits of the production units, and heat-power dependency constraints of the cogeneration units. Several conventional optimization algorithms have been firstly presented for providing the optimal production scheduling of power and heat generation units. Recently, experience-based algorithms, which are called heuristic and meta-heuristic optimization procedures, are introduced for solving the CHPED optimization problem. In this paper, a comprehensive review on application of heuristic optimization algorithms for the solution of CHPED problem is provided. In addition, the most popular heuristic and meta-heuristic optimization algorithms are studied in this paper, and implementation of the optimization procedures for the solution of CHPED problem taking into account the objective functions and different constrains are discussed. The main contributions of the reviewed papers are studied and discussed in details. Additionally, main considerations of equality and inequality constraints handled by different research studies are reported in this paper. Five test systems are considered for evaluating the performance of different optimization techniques. Optimal solutions obtained by employment of multiple heuristic and meta-heuristic optimization methods for test instances are demonstrated and the introduced methods are compared in terms of convergence speed, attained optimal solutions, and constrains. The best optimal solutions for five test systems are provided in terms of operational cost by employment of different optimization methods.

Feedback-Optimizing heuristic Model Predictive Control Applied to a Wind Turbine for Suppressing the Tower Vibrations

To have accurate control of a wind turbine, especially when facing wind loads, it is vital to model the dynamic behavior of the system accurately and select the controller parameters properly. To mitigate these challenges, here, an optimal model-based controller is utilized using particle swarm optimization to suppress the vibrations of the tower for an NREL 5 MW turbine in the presence of the turbulence wind. For this purpose, first, a discrete state-space model is derived for the wind turbine based on the finite difference method, and the validity of the model structure is verified with its analytical solution. Then, the structure of a model predictive controller is implemented on the model of the wind turbine with optimization of the plant behavior, extracted from state-space form, in a prediction horizon. Next, to prevent the dependence of the proposed controller structure on its parameters, a number of training scenarios including the turbulent wind with different intensities are run in parallel. The cost of each scenario is continually updated based on the tracking error, the control effort and the control command generation time in total run time. Consequently, the best parameters of the controller are adjusted using a stochastic robust optimization algorithm such as particle swarm optimization. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach has an excellent performance in dissipating the tower vibration.

Light can be Dangerous: Stealthy and Effective Physical-world Adversarial Attack by Spot Light

With the development of machine learning models throughout industries, there has been a correspond-ing increase in research demonstrating its vulnerability to adversarial examples (AE). Realizing physically robust AE that survive real-world environmental conditions faces the challenges such as varied viewing distances or angles. Laser beam-based methods claim to overcome the obviousness, semi-permanence, and unchangeable drawbacks of adversarial patches. However, laser beam-based AE could not be captured by the camera under daylight, which makes the application scenarios limited. In this research, we intro-duce Adversarial Spot Light (AdvSL), a novel approach that enables adversaries to build physically robust real-world AE by utilizing spotlight flashlights. Since the spotlight flashlights may be switched on and off as required, AdvSL allows adversaries to perform more flexible attacks than adversarial patches. Espe-cially, AdvSL is feasible in a variety of ambient light conditions. As a first step, we modeled a spot light with a set of parameters that can be physically controlled by the adversary. To determine the optimal pa-rameters for the light, a heuristic optimization approach is adopted. Further, we use the k-random-restart technique to prevent the approach from being stuck in a local optimum. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct experiments under different physical conditions, including indoor and outdoor tests. In the digital test, AdvSL causes misclassifications on state-of-the-art neural networks with up to 93.7% attack success rate. In the outdoor test, AdvSL causes misclassifications on the traffic sign classification model with up to 84% attack success rate. In the physical setting, experiments show that the AdvSL is robust in non-bright settings and is feasible in bright settings. High nonlinearity of BEV's stepped automatic transmission design objectives and its optimal solution by a novel ISA-RSA

The battery electric vehicle's (BEV's) stepped automatic transmission (SAT) has a significant influence on the power and economic performance of the new-energy vehicle system dynamics. The SAT entails a complex design process, where the transmission ratio parameter and the control strategy are interactively coupled, causing a difficulty in achieving a globally optimal solution. The actual design process involves multiple design objectives and incurs high design costs. The purpose of this study is to explore the variation characteristics of the design objectives of BEV's SAT and propose a transmission parameter optimization design method with reduced design costs. The paper investigates the interactive coupling property of the transmission ratio parameter and the control strategy, analyzing the high nonlinearity of SAT design objectives using the example of two-gear transmission. It proposes a design method that combines a heuristic optimization algorithm and an estimation model (Method III), and a design method that utilizes an improved simulated annealing algorithm and a region search algorithm (ISA-RSA, Method IV). These methods are compared with a design method based on combination tests using the traversing method (Method I) and a design method based on the heuristic optimization algorithm (Method II). The results indicate that Method I incurs high design costs with limited effectiveness, while Method II exhibits unstable economic performance and integrated design objectives with fluctuations. Method III is highly dependent on the accuracy of the estimated model and performs poorly in optimizing acceleration time. However, Method IV, with low design costs, demonstrates remarkable optimization ability to solve high nonlinearity problems and exhibits a high probability of converging to the area near the globally optimal solution. This paper studies how the spacecrafts maneuver in order to take and maintain good lighting conditions. The objective is to solve for the impulse signals required for spacecraft orbit maneuvers. The paper considers two groups of spacecrafts and compares the strategies of using the Lambert transfer and a heuristic optimization algorithm. Simulation experiments show that single-impulse maneuver optimization consumes less energy compared to the Lambert transfer, whereas the Lambert transfer achieves better results in taking and maintaining good lighting conditions. The outcome of this work provides guidance for simulation-based composite control strategies for maintaining satisfactory lighting conditions.

The precipitation systems that pass over mountains develop rapidly due to the forcible ascent caused by the topography, and spatial rainfall distribution differences occur due to the local development of the system because of the topography. In order to reduce the damage caused by orographic rainfall, it is essential to provide rainfall field data with high spatial rainfall accuracy. In this study, the rainfall estimation relationship was calculated using drop size distribution data obtained from 10 Parsivel disdrometers that were installed along the long axis of Mt. Halla (oriented west-east;height: 1950 m;width: 78 km;length: 35 km) on Jeju Island, South Korea. An ensemble rainfall estimation relationship was obtained using the HSA (harmony search algorithm). Through the linear combination of the rainfall estimation relationships determined by the HSA, the weight values of each relationship for each rainfall intensity were optimized. The relationships considering K-DP, such as R(K-DP) and R(Z(DR), K-DP), had higher weight values at rain rates that were more than 10 mm h(-1). Otherwise, the R(Z(H)) and R(Z(H), Z(DR)) weights, not considering K-DP, were predominant at rain rates weaker than 5 mm h(-1). The ensemble rainfall estimation method was more accurate than the rainfall that was estimated through an independent relationship. To generate the rain field that reflected the differences in the rainfall distribution according to terrain altitude and location, the spatial correction value was calculated by comparing the rainfall obtained from the dual-polarization radar and AWS observations. The distribution of Mt. Halla's rainfall correction values showed a sharp difference according to the changes in the topographical elevation. As a result, it was possible to calculate the optimal rain field for the orographic rainfall through the ensemble of rainfall relationships and the spatial rainfall correction process. Locating critical slip surfaces of soil slopes with heuristic algorithms: A comparative study

Calculating the minimum safety factor for locating or investigating the critical slip surfaces of soil slopes is a complex optimization problem. In this work, a series of variables are utilized to represent the slip surfaces of the slope, and the Morgenstern and Price's method is used to calculate the safety factor of a given slip surface. The performances of eight heuristic optimization algorithms (grey wolf optimizer, particle swarm optimization algorithm, whale optimization algorithm, salp swarm algorithm, multi-verse optimizer, ant lion optimizer, cuckoo search algorithm, and equilibrium optimizer) for locating the critical slip surfaces of slopes are compared. Three cases (one homogeneous slope and two multi-layered slopes) show that the equilibrium optimizer is superior to the other algorithms in terms of the quality of the solution, the convergence rate, and the robustness. One should carefully use the salp swarm algorithm and ant lion optimizer to locate the critical slip surfaces of slopes.

As a famous heuristic algorithm, bat algorithm (BA) simulates the behavior of bat echolocation, which has simple model, fast convergence and distributed characteristics. But it also has some defects like slow convergence and low optimizing accuracy. Facing the shortages above, an optimization bat algorithm based on adaptive speed strategy is proposed. This improved algorithm can simulate the bat in the process of search based on adaptive value size and adaptive speed adjustment. His approach can improve the optimization efficiency and accuracy. Experimental results on CEC2013 test benchmarks show that our proposal has better global searchability and a faster convergence speed, and can effectively overcome the problem convergence.

An improved gravitational search algorithm for global optimization

Gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is inspired by swarm behaviors in nature and physical law based on Newtonian gravity and the laws of motion. There are two key parameters including the number of applied agents (Kbest) and gravitational coefficient (G) to control the search progress in the algorithm. In the conventional GSA, the acceleration of the agents is mainly determined by Kbest and G. Kbest and G are calculated by a monotonically decreasing function, which is not a good schedule for solving complex problems. In order to solve the problem and accelerate the convergence of algorithm, an adaptive GSA is proposed, in which Kbest and G calculation method for strengthening exploitation capability are implemented to achieve better optimization results. Extensive experimental results based on benchmark functions are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The obtained results have been compared with the results of the original GSA, CGSA, and CLPSO. The comparison results have revealed that the proposed method has good performances.

Isogeometric shape optimization of high RCC gravity dams with functionally graded partition structure considering hydraulic fracturing

The seepage and cracking problems are always the key factors threatening the safety of RCC gravity dams. To improve the overall performance of the dam, a new type of high RCC gravity dam structure, functionally graded partition structure (FGPS), was proposed. The material properties including strength and impermeability were arranged in a gradient along the direction of water flow in FGPS. From the material level, the inhomogeneous numerical simulation method was applied to investigate the hydraulic fracturing of different types of concrete materials in FGPS. The influence of material properties and stress state on hydraulic fracturing was evaluated. The simulated results show that the vertical interface in FGPS is not the weak part. Gradient arrangement of materials can effectively reduce the possibility of hydraulic fracturing. From the structure level, the lowest construction cost design of FGPS was obtained by fusing isogeometric analysis and heuristic optimization algorithms (GA, MIGA, ASA) while maintaining the safety of RCC gravity dam under hydraulic fracturing. The optimization results indicated that integrating isogeometric analysis and ASA could realize faster convergence speed and reduce the computational burden of FGPS design. The proposal of FGPS in this study provides a new perspective to solve the problem of seepage and cracking. The improvement of mechanical properties and the perfection of the optimization design method probably raise the application prospect of FGPS in hydraulic engineering.
