The Allen Brain Atlas (ABA) provides a similar gene expression dataset by genome-scale mapping of the C57BL/6J mouse brain. In this study, the authors describe a method to extract the spatial information of gene expression patterns across a set of 1047 genes. The genes were chosen from among the 4104 genes having the lowest Pearson correlation coefficient used to compare the expression patterns across voxels in a single hemisphere for available coronal and sagittal volumes. The set of genes analysed in this study is the one discarded in the article by Bohland et al., which was considered to be of a lower consistency, not a reliable dataset. Following a normalisation task with a global and local approach, voxels were clustered using hierarchical and partitioning clusteringtechniques. Cluster analysis and a validation method based on entropy and purity were performed. They analyse the resulting clusters of the mouse brain for different number of groups and compared them with a classically-defined anatomical reference atlas. The high degree of correspondence between clusters and anatomical regions highlights how gene expression patterns with a low Pearson correlation coefficient between sagittal and coronal sections can accurately identify different neuroanatomical regions.

Bicycle sharing system has become more and more popular as it can help partly solve the problems such as CO2 over-emission and traffic congestion. Some systems have been operated for several years and the analysis work is very necessary for controlling and redesigning the system in purpose of getting better performances. In this paper we analyze the bike-sharing stations by clustering algorithms in order to mine the inner-station patterns, and these clustering results are essential for the system control and redesign. In this study, we take Velib' bike sharing system in Paris as the study case. (C) 2017, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Despite extensive research on the benefits of reverse logistics (RL), it has yet to become commonplace in the construction industry. Furthermore, the uptake and number of studies on RL remains very limited within the Australian context and particularly related to the construction industry. This paper is aimed at filling that knowledge gap by employing an exploratory approach to examine the critical barriers faced by South Australian construction organizations in implementing RL practices. Semi-structured interviews and a ranking approach facilitated the treatment of qualitative data through quantitative coding using cloud-based applications. The research identified 12 barriers to RL implementation, four of them very significant according to the responses of the interviewees: the regulatory environment, additional costs involved, lack of recognition in the construction supply chain, and extra effort required. The study also explored their inter-relationships through the Co-occurrence Index. The study proposes some remedial measures for RL implementation in South Australia based on the barriers identified.

Regression verification flows in modern integrated circuit development environments expose a plethora of counter-examples during simulation. Sorting these counter-examples today is a tedious and time-consuming process. High level design debugging aims to triage these counter-examples into groups that will be assigned to the appropriate verification and/or design engineers for detailed root cause analysis. In this work, we present an automated triage process that leverages knowledge extracted from simulation and SAT-based debugging. We introduce novel metrics that correlate counter-examples based on the likelihood of sharing the same root cause. Triage is formulated as a pattern recognition problem and solved by hierarchical clustering techniques to generate groups of related counter-examples. Experimental results demonstrate an overall accuracy of 94% for the proposed automated triage framework, which corresponds to a 40% improvement over conventional scripting methods.

Several chemometric techniques were compared for their performance to determine the orthogonality and similarity between chromatographic systems. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) based color maps earlier were used to indicate selectivity differences between systems. These maps, in which the systems were ranked according to decreasing or increasing dissimilarities observed in the weighted-average-linkage dendrogram, were now applied as reference method. A number of chemometric techniques were evaluated as potential alternative (visualization) methods for the same purpose. They include hierarchical clustering techniques (single, complete, unweighted-average-linkage, centroid and Ward's method), the Kennard and Stone algorithm, auto-associative multivariate regression trees (AAMRT), and the generalized pairwise correlation method (GPCM) with McNemar's statistical test. After all, the reference method remained our preferred technique to select orthogonal and identify similar systems. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
