New social problems caused by data bias have been an important issue in recent years. data bias is sometimes difficult to determine using only quantitative methods, and it requires human decision-making to resolve. visualization technology can help humans understand data bias and assist with this issue. This paper proposes a visualization method for detecting intersectional bias caused by multiple attributes. The method generates a hierarchical structure by classifying data items according to multiple attributes, and applies a hierarchical data visualization method equipped with band charts. It provides a visualization that gives an overview of the entire data and makes it easy to detect biases in a particular subset of the data. This paper introduces an application to the gender difference in the feeling of temperature with air conditioning systems, and presents the results of participant evaluations to verify the effectiveness of the proposed visualization over baseline implementation.

A novel space partitioning strategy is presented for implicit hierarchy visualization. The proposed orthogonal Voronoi treemap (OVT) partitions an empty canvas into nested orthogonal rectangles, thus the generated layout is not only flexible to diversified data value, but also much tidier than the Voronoi treemap with nested polygons. To achieve this, we first introduce a new distance calculation strategy in order to generate axis-aligned segmentation among the sites. To cope with the new segmentation strategy, we then design a sweepline + skyline heuristic algorithm to partition the canvas to generate an orthogonal Voronoi treemap. Comparative analyses on the computational experiment results in terms of aspect ratio is discussed.

The emergence of very large hierarchies that result from the increase in available data raises many problems of visualization and navigation. On data sets of such scale, classical graph drawing methods do not take advantage of certain human cognitive skills such as shape recognition. These cognitive skills could make it easier to remember the global structure of the data. In this paper, we propose a method that is based on the use of nested irregular shapes. We name it GosperMap as we rely on the use of a Gosper Curve to generate these shapes. By employing human perception mechanisms that were developed by handling, for example, cartographic maps, this technique facilitates the visualization and navigation of a hierarchy. An algorithm has been designed to preserve region containment according to the hierarchy and to set the leaves' sizes proportionally to a property, in such a way that the size of nonleaf regions corresponds to the sum of their children's sizes. Moreover, the input ordering of the hierarchy's nodes is preserved, i.e., the areas that represent two consecutive children of a node in the hierarchy are adjacent to one another. This property is especially useful because it guarantees some stability in our algorithm. We illustrate our technique by providing visualization examples of the repartition of tax money in the US over time. Furthermore, we validate the use of the GosperMap in a professional documentation context and show the stability and ease of memorization for this type of map.

A well-known limitation of classic continuous treemaps is that they generally provide two (or at most a few) visual mappings for data variables apart from the hierarchical relationships. Typically, one variable maps to cell area;another maps to color. However, many data-centric tasks require human users to consider multiple variables simultaneously. The current work introduces the concept of equal-height, variable-width cells in treemaps, which affords the packing of multiple variables into the cell areas of the terminals of the hierarchy. We demonstrate how color and some largely width-invariant graphs can be utilized in the cell areas to add additional visual information in a multi-variate treemap. Examples come from machine learning and from finance applications.

We present GoTree, a declarative grammar allowing users to instantiate tree visualizations by specifying three aspects: visual elements, layout, and coordinate system. Within the set of all possible tree visualization techniques, we identify a subset of techniques that are both "unit-decomposable" and "axis-decomposable" (terms we define). For tree visualizations within this subset, GoTree gives the user flexible and fine-grained control over the parameters of the techniques, supporting both explicit and implicit tree visualizations. We developed Tree Illustrator, an interactive authoring tool based on GoTree grammar. Tree Illustrator allows users to create a considerable number of tree visualizations, including not only existing techniques but also undiscovered and hybrid visualizations. We demonstrate the expressiveness and generative power of GoTree with a gallery of examples and conduct a qualitative study to validate the usability of Tree Illustrator.

This paper describes a prototype that offers visualization features for monitoring a web-based collaborative platform. The data displayed supports workplace awareness by providing an overview of the activities carried out on the platform. The prototype focuses on the information structured as hierarchicaldata. Three views are included: a classic vertical tree, a treemap view and an original new layout called ellimap. The system has been implemented on a real case in the domain of the support to innovation.
