The high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard aims at providing similar to 50% better compression compared to its predecessor (H.264) at the cost of high computational complexity. To enable HEVC video encoding in real-time scenarios, special coding support for parallelization is provided in HEVC that can be exploited by many-core systems. In this work, we present a HEVC software architecture where a video frame is adaptively divided into independent video frame regions (i.e. so-called video tiles) which are processed concurrently on multiple cores. By balancing the workload of each video tile mapped to a particular core, the total power consumption of a system is reduced (through dynamically scaling the operating frequency) under a given frame-rate constraint. We also exploit user tolerance to further curtail the HEVC workload with insignificant video quality degradation. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed approach results in similar to 43% power savings on a many-core system.

The new high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard facilitates the realisation of ultrahigh-definition video applications. Although the compression efficiency of the HEVC standard is double that of the well-established H.264 standard, HEVC incurs a considerably higher encoding complexity. This Letter presents an algorithm aimed at expediting reference picture selection processes in HEVC encoding. The proposed algorithm is primarily based on a reference picture and block discovered using the advanced motion vector prediction (AMVP) algorithm. Two acceleration conditions are included in the proposed algorithm. The first early-decision condition entails examining the rate-distortion (RD) cost associated with AMVP, and if this cost is lower than a predefined threshold, motion estimation is confined to the AMVP-selected reference picture. Furthermore, for coding units of size 64 x 64 (N = 32) with a prediction-unit (PU) partitioning of 2N x N or N x 2N, the second PU uses the same reference picture as the first PU if the first PU satisfies the first early-decision condition. The experimental results revealed that the proposed algorithm considerably reduced the total encoding time with negligible RD degradation.

As an extension of the high efficiency video coding standard, Scalable high-efficiency video coding (SHVC) has been developed to satisfy the challenges posed by heterogeneous environments. A layer-based scheme is employed to support various forms of scalability, but this results in significantly increased computational complexity. A fast coding Unit (CU) size decision algorithm is proposed to alleviate the additional computational requirement of the Enhancement Layers (ELs). The inter-layer dependency and the spatial correlation are jointly used to skip and early terminate the CU size decision process. In addition, the quantitive relationship between the texture homogeneity and the AC coefficient energy is investigated to further narrow the depth range to be evaluated. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme saves encoding time by up to 72% compared with the SHM 12.0 implementation, with negligible degradation in Rate-Distortion performance.

Low-complexity transcoding from H.264 to HEVC based on motion vector clustering

The forthcoming high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard substantially improves the coding efficiency compared with the H.264 standard. It also brings in much higher computational complexity. Transcoding from H.264 to HEVC is an important step to enable gradual migration to HEVC. A low-complexity H.264 to HEVC transcoding algorithm based on motion vector clustering is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce up to 40% of the computational time compared to the original method, while maintaining a high rate-distortion performance.

video coding has always been a computationally intensive process. Although dramatic improvements in coding efficiency have been realized in recent years, the algorithms have become increasingly complex and there is a broader recognition that it is necessary to realize the capabilities of multicore processors. This article discusses how recent trends in parallel computing have influenced the design of modern video coding standards. Specifically, the authors discuss how the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, which is being jointly developed by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29 WG11 (MPEG) and ITU-T SH16/Q.6 (VCEG), is looking at ways to implement the co-exploration between algorithm and architecture (CEAA) approach.

This Master Thesis proposes an adaptive algorithm that is able to dynamically choose suitable tile partitions for intra- and inter-predicted frames in order to reduce the impact on coding efficiency arising from such partitioning. Tiles are novel parallelismoriented tools that integrate the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, which divide the frame into independent rectangular regions that can be processed in parallel. To enable the parallelism, tiles break the coding dependencies across their boundaries leading to coding efficiency impacts. These impacts can be even higher if tile boundaries split highly correlated picture regions, because most of the coding tools use context information during the encoding process. Hence, the proposed algorithm clusters the highly correlated picture regions inside the same tile to reduce the inherent coding efficiency impact of using tiles. To wisely locate the highly correlated picture regions, image characteristics and encoding information are analyzed, generating partitioning maps that serve as the algorithm input. Based on these maps, the algorithm locates the natural context break of the picture and defines the tile boundaries on these key regions. This way, the dependency breaks caused by the tile boundaries match the natural context breaks of a picture, then minimizing the coding efficiency losses caused by the use of tiles. The proposed adaptive tiling algorithm, in some cases, provides over 0.4% and over 0.5% of BD-rate savings for intra- and inter-predicted frames respectively, when compared to uniform-spaced tiles, an approach which does not consider the picture context to define the tile partitions. ...

high efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the latest video coding standard. It aims to provide significant improvement of compression performance with considerable increment of computational complexity, compared with all exiting video coding standards. In this paper, we propose an adaptive CU depth selection mechanism (ACDSM) for inter mode decision. To avoid unnecessary CU partition by rate distortion optimization with Lagrange multiplier, an adaptive CU depth is derived from spatial homogeneity based on visual sensitivity, intensity gradient filter and the temporal stationarity characteristics of video objects, in ACDSM mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides averagely 32.93% encoding time reduction while maintaining the same level of perceptual visual quality, compared with HEVC test mode (HM 10.0) encoder with low-delay configurations.

Inter-layer filtering is a key module of the emerging Scalable Extension of high efficiency video coding standard (SHVC). In SHVC, up-sampled based layer reconstructed pictures are used as inter-layer references to predict enhancement layer frames such that inter-layer redundancy is reduced. To improve the coding performance of inter-layer filtering, luma plane based chroma plane enhancement was proposed at picture level. However, the efficiency of the picture level adaptation is not very promising when picture resolution is high. To address this issue, region based inter-layer cross-color filtering is proposed in this paper. Simulations under the common test conditions defined by Joint Collaborative Team on video coding (JCT-VC) showed that significant chroma coding gain and moderate luma improvement were achieved by the proposed method. When compared to the luma plane based chroma plane enhancement method, the coding gain over SHVC reference software SHM-2.0 is about doubled while the decoding complexity is kept even lower. Moreover, the proposed method outperforms other tools studied in SHVC core experiment on inter-layer filtering.
