Two-layer hierarchical coding for MPEG-2 video

A two-layer scheme for MPEG-2 video that uses adaptive data-partitioning (ADP) is presented. The slice structure of the upper layer and a new synchronisation procedure between the layers are defined. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the two-layer model, particularly for increasing values of cell loss probability.

Gradient-based predictor for diagonal edge pixels in JPEG-LS

JPEG-LS predictors have been optimised for the accurate prediction of pixels in the locality of horizontal/vertical edges. Here a low cost technique that accurately predicts the values of pixels along diagonal edges is proposed. It is shown that the proposed technique outperforms JPEG-LS in terms of predicted mean squared error, by a margin of up to 11.23%.

Shape-sequence-based key image generation algorithm for browsing and retrieval of video clips

A new shape-sequence-based algorithm that can effectively generate key images from video clips is introduced. Generated key images can be used as the feature information in the browsing and retrieval of video clips from a multimedia database. Experiments with MPEG-7 data sets were performed, and the results are compared with existing methods.

Self-conjugate watermarking technique for halftone images

A novel method for hiding visual patterns in a single error diffused halftone image is presented, called self-conjugate error diffusion (SCED). The hidden patterns appear on the halftone image when the halftone image is folded or is overlapped with its own related version. Simulation results show that the halftone images have good visual quality and the hidden pattern is clearly visible.

Object-based watermarking scheme robust to object manipulations

A new video watermarking scheme is proposed to resist object manipulations. Shape-adaptive DCT and a visual mask were combined to embed the shuffled watermark into the arbitrarily-shaped object. Inertia ellipse was employed to achieve fast self-synchronising watermark detection. Experiments show that the algorithm is robust to geometrical attacks.

Still image compression based on 2D discrete wavelet transform

The objective of this Letter is to develop new techniques for enhancing the compression of still images. The features of the proposed algorithm include: (i) zero mapping, which exploits the inherent self-similarity of wavelet coefficients at different scales, (ii) adaptive scanning, and (iii) data packing. Our algorithm outperforms both JPEG and the embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) algorithm.

Low-complexity overlapped block motion estimation using pattern-based pixel matching

A novel motion estimation method is presented which significantly reduces the computational complexity of overlapped block motion estimation (OBME). To eliminate the computationally intensive multiplications of OBME, the proposed method uses a predetermined pattern in selecting matched pixels within a window support. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves about the same prediction performance as the conventional approach.
