Factorisation for subclass of symmetric-antisymmetric multifilter banks and its application to image coding

A complete and minimal factorisation is proposed for an important subclass of symmetric-antisymmetric multiwavelet filter banks (SAMFBs). Based on this factorisation, optimal SAMFBs are designed for image coding under an optimisation criterion. Experimental results show that the SAMFBs significantly outperform the traditional 9-7 wavelet in terms of coding efficiency, especially for hard-to-compress images.

Multidimensional algebraic-integer encoding for high performance implementation of DCT and IDCT

A recently introduced single variable algebraic integer encoding scheme allows low complexity error-free computation of the DCT and IDCT. Introduced is the use of multidimensional algebraic-integer encoding of the transformation matrix of the DCT and IDCT which increases the sparseness of the encoding matrix and substantially reduces the dynamic range of the transformation coefficients. The computational savings are approximately 20% for typical image compression applications.

Fractal image compression with simple classification scheme in frequency domain

In fractal image compression, the mean squared error (MSE) computations of the eight orientations of the domain blocks can be reduced into two groups of inner products in the frequency domain. A very simple classification scheme is presented for reducing the two groups of computations into one, which makes the encoder up to 4.7 times faster.

Hierarchical distillation for image compressive sensing reconstruction

Compressive sensing (CS) is an effective algorithm for reconstructing images from a small sample of data. CS models combining traditional optimisation-based CS methods and deep learning have been used to improve image reconstruction performance. However, if the sample ratio is very low, the performance of the CS method combined with deep learning will be unsatisfactory. In this letter, a deep learning-based CS model incorporating hierarchical knowledge distillation to improve image reconstruction even at varied sample ratios. Compared to the state-of-art methods with all compressive sensing ratios, the proposed method improved performance by an average of 0.26 dB without additional trainable parameters.

Iterative Wyner-Ziv decoding for unidirectional distributed video coding

Unidirectional distributed video coding (DVC) is one of the untouched areas of DVC, which has to be necessarily employed when the feedback channel is not available. Thus, to serve that purpose, proposed is a unidirectional distributed video coding using a parallel Wyner-Ziv architecture. Simulation results show that up to 6.5 dB PSNR gain can be obtained with the proposed codec, over the conventional DVC codec [1] with no feedback channel at the same bit rate and the computational cost.

coding of arbitrarily shaped video objects based on SPIHT

A new coding algorithm is proposed for encoding arbitrarily shaped video objects. This algorithm employs an object-based discrete wavelet transform to decompose the video object. The decomposed pyramid is entropy encoded with a modified set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm called partial-SPIHT (P-SPIHT). which only encodes the coefficients belonging to the decomposed video objects. The performance of this algorithm shows that it is a competitive candidate for the standardisation of video object coding.
