Intra video coding is a common way to process video material for applications like professional video editing systems, digital cinema, video surveillance applications, multispectral satellite imaging, HQ video delivery, etc. Most practical intra coding systems employ JPEG encoders due to their simplicity, low coding delay and low memory requirements. JPEG2000 is the main candidate to replace JPEG in this kind of applications due to the excellent R/D performance and high coding flexibility. However, its complexity and computational resources required for proper operation could be a limitation for certain applications. In this work, we propose an intra video codec, M-LTW, which is able to reach very good R/D performance results, as well as JPEG2000 or H.264 INTRA, with faster processing and lower memory usage.

Several standardized video coding algorithms use a well known discrete cosine transform (DCT) at the encoder to remove redundancy from video random processes. Its inverse, the IDCT is present at the decoder as well as at the encoder loop. The accuracy of this inverse transform, required to avoid large drift between the encoder and decoder, is defined in an IEEE standard which will be withdrawn from MPEG and ITU standardized codecs. Due to the huge number of computations required to compute the FDCT/IDCT (Forward/Inverse DCT) pair, reduction of their complexity is essential to speed up the video processing. In this paper, we propose a fast integer IDCT calculation method. Additionally, we insert it into the MPEG-4 (Part 2) reference software in order to validate our proposed method. The testing results using two different video sequences, at QCIF resolution, show similar PSNR average values between the reference MPEG-4 and the proposed MPEG-4 codec.

In the Letter 'Unified VLSI architecture for photo core transform used in JPEG XR', the authors proposed a hardware architecture to implement the three elementary 2 x 2 transform operations for the photo core transform used in JPEG XR. However, there are some errors in their implementation, dataflow and reported resources used. In this Letter, we point out those errors and suggest the corresponding corrections. We also provide constant additions which must be added to the results of the implementation to conform the standard.

The paper addresses the problem of multirate signal processing over arbitrary fields. Studies of multirate systems and filter banks have proceeded in parallel, and a wealth of results are available in literature. The authors concentrate their attention on cyclic systems. These structures are ideally suited to generalising the concepts to finite fields. The perfect reconstruction property for quadrature mirror filter banks is obtained. It is shown how the cyclic wavelet transform (CWT) can be derived from such systems;the relationships between cyclic filter banks and CWTs are explored in detail. The results obtained are potentially very well Suited for speech and image encoding, as well as for fast algorithms in signal processing.

Multi-radar target parameter estimation and fusion based on attribute scattering centre model

This study proposes a method of observing the same target from different radars to extract more useful target information, solving the problem of target occlusion in monostatic radar. This study uses the parameter estimation method of two-dimension compressed sensing algorithm based on the attribute scattering centre model to get the location, length and attitude angle of the target from different radars. The algorithm can reduce the memory, solving the problem of increasing data volume caused by multi-radar observations. Simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness of the method. The multiradar imaging processing can also improve operation efficiency and enhance the visibility of the image, which is conducive to target recognition.

Application of quantisation-based deep-learning model compression in JPEG image steganalysis

Steganography can hide secret information in an innocent cover medium. Its opponent is steganalysis, which is used to discriminate whether a suspicious carrier contains a hidden message or not. With the rapid development of deep-learning frameworks, deep-learning-based steganalytic models have hold the dominant position in the field of steganalysis. In recent years, some scholars have successfully utilised model compression methods in the field of image classification. However, as far as the authors know, no prior works are devoted to the application of model compression methods in the field of deep-learningbased steganalysis. In this study, the authors explore the effect of two quantisation schemes, namely 8-bit calculation and floating-point calculation, on the performance of XuNet, a state-of-the-art deep-learning steganalytic model. The experimental results show that the two deep-learning model quantisation schemes are applicable to steganalysis. It is even possible to compress the network size while retaining satisfactory performance.

Fuzzy logic inference system-based hybrid quality prediction model for wireless 4kUHD H.265-coded video streaming

Networked visual applications such video streaming have grown exponentially in recent years, yet are known to be sensitive to network impairments. However, available measurement techniques that adopt a full reference model are impractical in real-time streaming because they require the original video sequence available at the receivers side. The primary aim of this study is to present a hybrid no-reference prediction model for the perceptual quality of 4kUHD H. 265-coded video in the wireless domain. The contributions of this paper are two-fold: first, an investigation of the impact of quality of service (QoS) parameters on 4kUHD H. 265-coded video transmission in an experimental environment;second, objective model based on fuzzy logic inference system is developed to predict the visual quality by mapping QoS parameters to the measured quality of experience. The model is evaluated in contrast to random neural networks. The results show that good prediction accuracy was obtained from the proposed hybrid prediction model. This study will help in the development of a reference-free video quality prediction model and QoS control methods for 4kUHD video streaming.

In mobile cloud gaming, one of the main challenges is to deliver high-quality game images over wireless networks under stringent delay requirement. To reduce the bit-rate of game images, we propose Layered coding, which leverages the graphic rendering capability of modern mobile devices to reduce transmission bit-rate. Specifically, we render a low-quality local game image, or the base layer, on the power-constrained mobile client. Instead of sending the high quality game image, the cloud server sends enhancement layer information, which the client utilizes to improve the quality of the base layer. Central to the proposed layered coding is the design of base layer (BL) rendering. We discuss BL design and propose a computationally-scalable Phong lighting that can be used in BL rendering. We performed experiments to compare our layered coding with state-of-the-art, which uses H.264/AVC inter-frame coding to compress game images. With game sequences of different model complexity and motion, our results suggest that layered coding requires substantially lower data-rate. We made available game video test sequences to stimulate future research.
