This paper proposes a depth image coding algorithm derived from the colorization based image coding algorithm. In the colorization based image coding algorithm, the chrominance images are coded using the luminance image, and high coding performance is achieved. Motivated by this algorithm, this paper proposes a new RGB image guided depth image coding algorithm. This paper assumes that the RGB image corresponding to the depth image is given, and the depth image is encoded and decoded using the RGB image. The numerical examples show that the proposed algorithm achieves a high compression performance compared with JPEG coding and JPEG2000 coding.

The authors propose a segmentation-based hybrid image coding algorithm taking the features of the human visual system into account. A novel segmentation criterion based on luminance masking is presented. The image is segmented into blocks of different sizes and different properties. Block mean, polynomial approximation and discrete cosine transform coding are then applied to the blocks accordingly.

This paper proposes an improved color Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (CSPIHT) algorithm based on multiwavelet. In the proposed image coding algorithm, color RGB image is converted into YCbCr format. Clearly, coding bit stream luminance Y plane is higher than Cb and Cr chrominance planes. The new spatial orientation tree structure is developed between channel planes based on SPIHT coding idea. Combination with mutltiwavelet coefficients, we embedded multiwavelet SPHIT coding for color images. The result shows that this coding method is Valid and performance is superior to SPHIT on 9/7 wavelet.
