Block truncation coding (BTC) is an efficient image coding method with wide applications. However, most BTC methods produce only binary image blocks for display. Thus the limited representation power of binary images has been a major hindering factor for BTC performance improvement. A new multitone block truncation coding (MBTC) approach is presented, which breaks this limit by producing multitone pixel values. This approach uses a modified bilateral filtering algorithm to effectively extract the spatial information inherent in the binary coded image blocks. The proposed method significantly improves the code rate and the reconstructed image quality while keeping the processing efficiency among the best published results, making it suitable for high speed real time image and video communication and display.

In this paper, we propose a combined SPIHT/OFDM coding scheme for transmission of image/video over wireless fading channels. The proposed system implements a rate control algorithm as the imagecoding scheme and an adaptive modulation OFDM system as the communication coding scheme. We evaluate the system over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results for Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the received image at different rates are presented which demonstrate the contribution of our algorithm over this challenging channel.

In this paper, we propose an imagecoding scheme based on a wavelet-like transform derived from orthogonal polynomial basis. First, 2D non-separable wavelet functions are derived from a set of bivariate orthogonal polynomials. Then, a wavelet-like transform coding scheme using the proposed wavelet functions is proposed. The motivation behind using orthogonal polynomials is that they exhibit some properties related to the human visual system (HVS) [1]. After applying the proposed transform, the obtained coefficients are threshold coded using quantization and bit allocation as in JPEG baseline system. The performance of the proposed transform codingmethod is reported. The proposed coding scheme is also compared with other transform codingmethods such as JPEG, JPEG2000 and JPEG-XR/HDPHOTO.

With the rapid development of 3D capture techniques, point cloud has attracted significant attentions in recent years. Due to the large data volume of point cloud, efficient compression algorithms are essential for reducing bandwidth and storage consumption. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for point cloud attribute compression based on hierarchical segmentation. In this case, both global segmentation in photometric space and local segmentation in geometric space are analyzed to split point cloud into clusters. An octree based traversal algorithm is introduced to obtain the attribute stream of each cluster. Then, an intra-cluster prediction method is applied to achieve lossless compression. Meanwhile, we map the attribute streams to uniform 2D grids and leverage image coding method to achieve satisfying lossy compression performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our scheme outperforms the previous MPEG scheme in terms of coding efficiency.

This paper proposes an image coding method based on adaptive downsampling which not only uses the pixel redundancy but also considers visual redundancy. At the encoder side, codec adaptively chooses some smooth regions of the original image to downsample, and then overlapped transform with selectivity, block DCT and adaptive-shape DCT (SA-DCT) are used against the image after being downsampled. For the incomplete transformed image, OB-SPECK is adopted to code. At the decoder side, in order to reduce the computational complexity, we use the simple cubic interpolation which not only is very suitable to the downsampled regions but also enhances greatly the real time of this coding system. Experimental results show the proposed method outperforms JPEG2000, SPECK, SPIHT, and LT+SPECK at low bit rates.
