An efficient image compression technique as a preprocessing step for skeletonisation is presented. For this purpose a 5*5 pattern window is used, in which an internal 3*3 nonoverlapping window does the compression whilst the outer ring of pixels helps to preserve the image connectivity during compression. Comparative evaluation based on experimental results, execution timings and quality of the skeleton obtained, show that this algorithm is faster and more efficient than many other existing thinning algorithms. This algorithm is also more efficient for noisy images than other thinning algorithms because it simultaneously performs median filtering operations.

The redundancy in digital image representation can be classified into two categories: local and global, In this paper, we present an analysis of two image characteristics that give rise to local and global redundancy in image representation, Based on this study, we propose a lossless image compression scheme that exploits redundancy both at local and global levels in order to obtain maximum compression efficiency, The proposed algorithm segments the image into variable size blocks and encodes them depending on the characteristics exhibited by the pixels within the block, The proposed algorithm is implemented in software and its performance is better than other lossless compression schemes such as the Huffman, the arithmetic, the Lempel-Ziv and the JPEG.

JPEG 2000 is a new image coding system that uses state-of-the-art compression techniques based on wavelet technology. As interactive multimedia technologies evolve, the requirements for the file format used to store the image data continue to evolve. The size and bit depth collected for an image to increase the resolution and extend the dynamic range and color gamut. Discrete Wavelet transform based embedded image coding method is the basis of JPEG2000. image compression algorithm for the proper use and display of the image is a requirement for digital photography.

Fractal image compression (FIC) problem is a combinatorial optimization problem which has recently become one of the most promising encoding technologies in the generation of compressed images. In order to exploit the information laid in Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) coefficients of the images, this paper proposes a novel wavelet based FIC method to both speed up the compression process and retain the quality of the retrieved images. In the proposed algorithm at first the wavelet coefficients of the image are extracted. Then according to the wavelet coefficients of the range blocks the search strategy for each range block is determined. For smooth blocks a no-search algorithm is applied. For the horizontal and vertical edges, if the no-search algorithm does not provide an appropriate result, the wavelet based search algorithm starts its search process. For vertical range blocks, just the vertical domain blocks and for horizontal range blocks, just the horizontal and for orthogonal range blocks just the orthogonal domain blocks are considered for the search process. In order to explain how such an algorithm works, some statistical analysis on the landscape of fractal image compression problem is performed on 8 different pictures with different textures. The proposed algorithm is compared with the GA-based and original version of fractal image compression algorithms and experimental results show improvement both in speed and the quality of the decoded images.

At present, massive amounts of image data have been generated at the power construction site. Due to the limitation of power communication transmission bandwidth, it is necessary to improve the low bit rate, high compression ratio, and anti-interference of the image, which is very necessary for on-site management personnel under the premise of ensuring efficient information transmission. Aiming at the above problems, this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT). Firstly, the feature value of the image is extracted, and then the wavelet encoding is performed to obtain the compressed image. Compared with the traditional multi-level tree ensemble splitting algorithm, experimental data show that the image compressed by this algorithm has better visual effects and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, the method can effectively improve the transmission performance of the on-site image of the infrastructure construction, and ultimately improve the efficiency of the on-site inspection for violations.

In order to get a balance of compression quality, compression ratio and time efficiency, we exploit JPEG_LS prediction and context-based encoding, and propose another linear prediction and run length code model. And we give an innovative compression algorithm design to evaluate the performance of our proposed schema. We present the compression results using a large number of images compared with JPEG_LS. As a result, Our proposed schema obtains the same compression quality, an increasing compression speed as much as 150%-250%, at the expense of compression ratio decreasing of 20%-35%. Also our proposed algorithm has less Computational complexity. So it can be included that our proposed algorithm is more suitable for real-time and embedded applications than JPEG-LS.

The conventional approach of using DCT (discrete cosine transform) which is Fourier based has been most popular in industry. The advantages and potentials of image compression using wavelet analysis are now being explored. In this paper a neu image compression algorithm based on wavelet analysis is presented that makes use of a lifting scheme and a modification of the 3-D subband coding. The exploitation of contexts in both space-time and space-space brings out an improved algorithm that is both performance effective and computationally efficient. The software system using this algorithm has the advantage that it is much more flexible and less costly than hardware systems. The new algorithm has been tested with the compression of traffic scene video with satisfactory results.

In this paper, we propose a new approach for image compression based on compressive sensing (CS). We introduce a new formulation of sparse vectors for rearranging multilevel 2-D Wavelet coefficients into a structured manner using parent-child relationships. We then use a Gaussian measurement matrix normalized with the weighted average Root Mean Squared (RMS) energies of different wavelet subbands. Compressed sampling is finally performed using this normalized measurement matrix. At the decoding stage, the image is reconstructed using a simple l_1-minimization technique. The proposed wavelet-based CS compression results in performance increase compared to other conventional CS-based techniques. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing approaches over different natural images.
