With the development of interactive multimedia technologies, image and video compression algorithms necessitated a number of better performance and functionality. Wavelet transform based embedded image coding method is the basis of JPEG2000. Lossy image compression algorithms sacrifice perfect image reconstruction in favor of decreased storage requirements. JPEG2000 algorithm has been developed based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) techniques, which have shown how the results achieved in different areas in information technology can be applied to enhance the performance.

We study the rate-distortion performance of the SPIHT image compression algorithm and present an optimization method that produces the bit stream with minimum Lagrangian cost J = D + lambdaR for a given stopping criterion. Although there are only three applicable stop points at each bit plane, experiments show that substantial improvements can be obtained over a wide range of bit rates.

This paper presents an image compression algorithm for gray scale images, based on neural networks. According to this algorithm the image will be first decomposed into Hadamard set of functions and second, the coefficients from the decomposition will be dynamically clustered by a newly proposed Dynamic Adaptive Clustering Method (DACM). We show that DACM converges to approximate the optimum solution based an the least sum of squares criterion theoretically and experimentally. We applied the compression method to various gray scale images and show its efficiency in providing high compression rates. In order to show some comparative results for the proposed method, we have chosen the well-known JPEG. its algorithm has similar structure and therefore is a good basis for comparison. The results from the gray scale images experiments are in favor of the proposed method.

This paper describes a double compression method (DCM) of biomedical images. A comparison of image compression factors in size JPEG, PNG and developed DCM was carried out. The main purpose of the DCM - compression of medical images while maintaining the key points that carry diagnostic information. To estimate the minimum compression factor an analysis of the coding of random noise image is presented.

Traffic congestion has always been a major problem in the Philippines. This project study developed an integrated sensor system for intelligent transportation, which addressed the lack of automatic traffic monitoring systems to achieve traffic efficiency and safety. The researchers utilized different sensors in gathering data such as water level, temperature, and humidity within a certain area as well as a camera in capturing images and compared the three image compression algorithms, mainly the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform), DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) and SVD (singular value decomposition) in terms of different parameters used in describing and identifying the best type of image compression to be applied prior to transmission to other different nodes. MSE (mean squared error) value, PSNR (Peak signal-to-noise ratio), Compress Ratio, and Process Time were the values of comparison in determining the best compression technique or algorithm for the gathered images. As a result, it was found that DCT characterized the best parameters for image compression. DCT produced the highest PSNR (52.41979dB), the lowest value for MSE (0.37247), and the lowest process time (0.16181s), while SVD was able to produce the most compressed image. This project also utilized solar renewable energy for the power management system, which enabled the system to run independently without any other external power source. This will be beneficial for the community to identify which roads can be used to optimize the mobility of the vehicles and maximize the use of renewable energy;hence will help reduce the traffic congestion issues in the country.

Object detection in aviation video is very important in many occasions. Through research on characteristic of aviation video image, and analyzing of motion estimation theory, an object detection technique based on motion vector compensation and statistical analysis is proposed. Through effective image preprocessing, noise that influenced the capacity of algorithm is removed through a Bayesian estimation based wavelet denoising method;a compensation is carry out between the motion vector computed from parameters of camera and the motion estimation that usually used in all kinds of image compression algorithm. The compensation makes it easy to distinguish object motion from background. Then statistic analysis, a clustering using center and density of compensated motion vector is performed to eliminate isolate motion vector and realize object detection. Settings of the threshold can prevent some errors of global estimation which derived from the parameters from compensation, and have some accessorial effect in motion vector clustering and object detection.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), a modern video compression standard, exceeds the predecessor H. 264 in efficiency by 50%, but with cost of increased complexity. It is one of main research topics for FPGA engineers working on image compression algorithms. On the other hand high-level synthesis tools after few years of lower interest from the industry and academic research, started to gain more of it recently. This paper presents FPGA implementation of HEVC 2D Inverse DCT transform implemented on Xilinx Virtex-6 using Impulse C high level language. Achieved results exceed 1080p@30fps with relatively high FPGA clock frequency and moderate resource usage.

Medical imaging compression is experiencing a growth in terms of usage and image resolution, namely in diagnostics systems that require a large set of images, like MRI or CT. Furthermore, legal and diagnosis restrictions impose the use of lossless compression and data archival for several years. These facts create a demand for more efficient compression tools, used for archiving and communication. In this work, we first evaluate the performance of traditional medical image compression algorithms against that of recent state of the art lossless image encoders. We then propose a method to improve the Minimum Rate Predictors lossless encoder, by exploiting inter picture redundancy in volumetric anatomical images. Results show that the proposed method is more efficient than state of the art encoders, such as HEVC, by about 28.8%, and achieves a gain of up to 57.8% in compression ratio when compared with traditional methods.

We recently introduced a new focal plane image compression algorithm that is implemented with 607 transistors inside every 4×4 pixel block of a CMOS imager, using conventional 0 35μm integration technology. This work focuses on preliminary results concerning the overall MTF of an imaging system in which the CMOS imager features focal-plane data compression based on DPCM and VQ with an overall bit rate below 0.94 bpp. Using bar-target pattern inputs, it is shown that details up to 2 cycles/cm are preserved in the decoded images. antonio@***
