Low-complexity near-lossless image compression method and its application-specific integrated circuit design for a wireless endoscopy capsule system

This paper proposes a new low-complexity, near-lossless image compression method and its application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design for low power and high frame rate in the wireless endoscopy capsule system. Assuring high image quality (PSNR larger than 46.37 dB and pixel error less than 2), the proposed method can provide low complexity, low storage overhead, as well as excellent compression performance compared with other conventional interpolation-first methods and other existing similar compression-first methods. The VLSI implementation functionally consists of two pipelined parts: the preprocessor and the JPEG-LS engine. A parallel, fully pipelined VLSI architecture with a clock management mechanism is proposed for the JPEG-LS engine, which ensures a low power application and real-time data processing. The hardware implement has been verified on FPGA and implemented in 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. (c) 2007 SPIE and IS&T.

In most of the telemedicine applications, the role of image compression techniques is important to deal with the medical images. This will be used for storage and transfer of data over a low bandwidth channel. One of the main drawbacks of the lossy compression algorithms is that it is not applicable for multimedia application while the overall quality of the image can be controlled to some extent. Due to the multiple properties of the Wavelet Transform over DCT, the wavelet based techniques (JPEG 2000) have produced better results compared to DCT based techniques (JPEG). Results of the above-noted techniques were compared and different parameters for medical images such as compression, MSE, SNR, PSNR analysis were carried out.

Adaptive technique for image compression based on vector quantization using a self-organizing neural network

A novel image compression technique employing the self-organized clustering capability of Fuzzy-ART neural network and 2D runlength encoding is presented. Initially the image is divided into 4x4 blocks and the 16 element vectors representing the pixels in the blocks are applied to the Fuzzy-ART network for classification. The image is then represented by the block codes consisting of the sequence of class indices, and the codebook consisting of the class index and their respective gray levels. Further compression is achieved by 2D runlength encoding, making use of the repetitions of the class index in the block codes in x and y directions. By controlling the vigilance parameter of Fuzzy-ART a reasonable compression of the image without sacrificing the image quality can be obtained. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the proposed method of image compression can be used for image communication systems where large compression ratio is required. An efficient technique for automatic computation of the value of vigilance parameter based on the image characteristics for optimum compression of the image is also presented in this paper. With the introduction of a new class of Fuzzy-ART network, namely Force Class Fuzzy-ART hardware implementation of the image compression module is made feasible. This architecture constrains the maximum number of classes in the output of the network by forcing the new vectors into one of the closest categories. (c) 2005 SPIE and IS&T.

A new efficient image compression technique is presented for low cost applications, such as multimedia and video-conferencing. Since address vector quantization (A-VQ), proposed by Nasrabadi and Feng for image coding, has the main disadvantage of high computational complexity of reordering the address codebook at the transmitter and the receiver during encoding of each block, we propose. a new efficient approach to overcome this disadvantage. The proposed algorithm is based on tree search vector quantization via, multi-path search and index matching: in index codebook? and may achieve a better performance as well as low computational complexity. We theoretically prove that the proposed algorithm is superior to the A-VQ algorithm and experimentally show that a lower bit rate than that of the A-VQ is obtained.

compression of interference patterns with application to phase-shifting digital holography

A compression method of phase-shifting digital holographic data is presented. Three interference patterns are recorded, and holographic information is extracted from them by phase-shifting interferometry. The scheme uses standard baseline Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) or standard JPEG-2000 image compression techniques on the recorded interference patterns to reduce the amount of data to be stored. High compression rates are achieved for good reconstructed object image quality. The utility of the proposed method is experimentally verified with real holographic data. Results for compression rates using JPEG-2000 and JPEG of approximately 27 and 20, respectively, for a normalized root-mean-square error of similar to 0.7 are demonstrated. image details appear as wavelet coefficients with large magnitude in the wavelet transform domain. image compression methods such as the embedded zerotree wavelet encoding and the set partitioning in hierarchical trees select wavelet coefficients in the order of their significance (magnitude) and encode them generating an embedded bit stream. In existing wavelet based image compression techniques, the significance of a wavelet coefficient is solely defined by its magnitude. In this paper, we describe a flexible scheme to prioritize wavelet coefficients based on the features they exhibit. The proposed scheme combines tree based wavelet coefficient representation with the implicit transmission of data about image features that need to be emphasized. The experimental results presented in this paper demonstrate that it is possible to enhance the image features in the reconstructed images by embedding locally adaptive image processing techniques in the compression algorithm. The main advantage of the proposed technique over the existing methods is that it exploits the embedded zerotree data structure to eliminate the need to send side (additional) information to the decoder regarding the feature selection process. A fast image compression technique as well as its Progressive image Transmission (PIT)version using fractals is presented which uses a small pool of domains extracted using visually significant patterns. The affine transformations for an edge block are obtained by using its edge characteristics instead of minimum mean square error criterion. Simulation studies demonstrate that this method is computationally simple, gives faster encoding speed and achieves good fidelity at relatively higher compression ratios than other fractal based techniques.

Vector quantization (VQ) and block truncation coding (BTC) are successful image compression techniques, However, 31 a reproduced image using VQ or BTC suffers from edge degradation. In this paper, a new technique that combines the advantages of both VQ and BTC to combat this degradation is presented and will be referred to as VQ-BTC. In VQ-BTC, a low-detail block is encoded using VQ. For a high-detail block, a modification of BTC is used to determine the locations of the relatively lighter and relatively darker pixels inside the block and VQ is then used to encode each, VQ-BTC provides improved edge reproduction and much lower bit rates than those obtained by BTC.

In recent years, there have been a number of studies addressing both reversible and irreversible compression of medical images ranging from 256 x 256 to 2048 x 2048 pixels in spatial resolution. There is a need to address the high-resolution end of the image categories, namely mammograms and chest X-rays, which require resolution of the order of 4096 x 4096 pixels. Further, data compression schemes for most medical applications have to be information-preserving or reversible. In this paper, the performance of a number of block-based, reversible, compression algorithms suitable for compression of very large-format images (4096 x 4096 pixels or more) is compared to that of a novel two-dimensional linear predictive coder developed by extending the multichannel version of the Burg algorithm to two dimensions. The compression schemes implemented are: Huffman coding, Lempel-Ziv coding, arithmetic coding, two-dimensional linear predictive coding (in addition to the aforementioned one), transform coding using discrete Fourier-, discrete cosine-, and discrete Walsh transforms, linear interpolative coding, and combinations thereof. We discuss the performance of these coding techniques with a few mammograms and chest radiographs digitized to sizes up to 4096 x 4096, 10 b pixels. We have achieved compression from 10 bits to 2.5-3.0 b/pixel on these images without any loss of information. The modified multichannel linear predictor out-performs the other methods while offering certain advantages in implementation.

The fundamental goal of image data compression is to set an optimal compression ratio while maintaining an acceptable reproduction quality. This study describes the principles of design of image compression system that automatically sets an optimal compression ratio for particular image content by identifying the image compression method while maintaining a tolerable reproduction quality. The proposed image compression system employs subjective and objective criteria for an assessment of the quality of the image compression system. The supervised artificial neural network is used to identify a compression method among different compression techniques by using subjective criterion. An objective criterion is used to determine an optimal compression ratio, which is calculated by using linear regression analysis that establishes analytical expression between a compression ratio, a property of an image and a reconstructed quality of an image. It was proved that the system is an effective tool for medical image compression applications.
