Gray code image processing algorithm for measuring the three-dimensional geometry of objects with complex profiles

The article describes the development of data processing methods, specifically a method for processing binary Gray code images. The results of processing binary Gray code images are used to resolve phase ambiguity in the phase triangulation method, which is a variation of the triangulation method using structured light. An image processing algorithm was developed to decode binary code generated by an optical source. The code takes the form of the dependence between the intensity distribution of the surface image of the analyzed object and the frame number. The proposed algorithm provides stable binarization of Gray code images under the conditions of a limited dynamic range of the photodetector and arbitrary light-scattering surface properties of the analyzed object without the use of inverse projected images. The developed algorithm can be successfully applied in triangulation systems using structured light to measure the three-dimensional geometry of complex-shaped objects. It is shown that for all possible ratios between the recorded radiation intensity and the dynamic range of the photodetector, this algorithm can be used to correctly decode Gray code (in the form of structured-light images). In this case, deviations in the results of Gray code decoding can be attributed only to noise in the images and do not distort measurement results. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm consists in its ability to use almost half the number of structured light images to decode the Gray code as compared to the algorithm using inverse code images.

To solve the problems of low signal to noise ratio (SNR), poor processing effect, and long processing times for traditional image processing algorithms, an image processing algorithm for the agricultural Internet of Things platform based on big data analysis was designed. The big data analysis method was used for agricultural low-quality image recognition, and the Internet of Things platform uses sparse representation and a complete dictionary of low -quality image denoising processing with an improved histogram equalization method to enhance the image denoising result and get a high-quality image. Through this, the image processing algorithm design of the agricultural Internet of Things platform was completed. Experimental results show that the algorithm has high SNR and a good image processing effect, and the image processing time is always below 0.7 s, which meets research expectations.

Flight Performance Analysis of an image processing algorithm for Integrated Sense-and-Avoid Systems

This paper is focused on the development and the flight performance analysis of an image-processing technique aimed at detecting flying obstacles in airborne panchromatic images. It was developed within the framework of a research project which aims at realizing a prototypical obstacle detection and identification System, characterized by a hierarchical multisensor configuration. This configuration comprises a radar, that is, the main sensor, and four electro-optical cameras. Cameras are used as auxiliary sensors to the radar, in order to increase intruder aircraft position measurement, in terms of accuracy and data rate. The paper thoroughly describes the selection and customization of the developed image-processing techniques in order to guarantee the best results in terms of detection range, missed detection rate, and false-alarm rate. Performance is evaluated on the basis of a large amount of images gathered during flight tests with an intruder aircraft. The improvement in terms of accuracy and data rate, compared with radar-only tracking, is quantitatively demonstrated.

Characterization of a Micro Beam Fabricated with 3D Technology Using image processing algorithm

Background: This article presents a micro beam, fabricated using digital light processing (DLP), one of the additive manufacturing methods. The fabrication process is based on the projection micro stereolithography method. Objective: The micro beam, which can move in one direction (y-axis), was designed according to the specified criteria and fabricated. In the experiments carried out during the fabrication process, it showed the effect of the support structures on the fabrication of the micro beam. Methods: For the characterization process, the micro beam connected to the probe station is connected to a circuit board with cables attached to the electrical pads. The image processing algorithm has been developed to detect the displacement of the micro beam as a result of the characterization processes. The operating voltage was increased from 0V to 2V and incremented until fracture and deterioration in the structure of the micro beam were observed. Results: The micro beam was able to withstand distortion and breaks up to a maximum voltage of 10V. When 12V voltage was applied to the micro beam, fractures occurred in the arm. As a result of the characterization process, the maximum displacement of the micro beam was measured as 2.32 mu m at 10V voltage. YY Conclusion: The characterization results indicated the usability of the image processing algorithm in 3D technology.

A MATLAB-based image processing algorithm for analyzing cupping profiles of two-layer laminated wood products

This study developed a MATLAB-based image processing algorithm for calculating the cupping of two-layer laminated wood specimens made of densified and undensified balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.). A six-week moisture cycling treatment followed by an oven-drying treatment was conducted to produce cupping. Two series of images, recording the undeformed and deformed shapes of each specimen, were scanned using a computed tomography (CT) scanner. The algorithm developed in the study accurately detected the two end points and the top point at the bottom edge of deformed specimens and then calculated the cupping using a quadratic curve fitting method. In this paper manual parallelization is compared with parallelization using the Open Multi-processing (OpenMP) software framework on an embedded eight core Digital Signal Processor (DSP) developed by Texas Instruments. In order to compare these two methods an in-house developed 2D image registration algorithm is parallelized. Furthermore considerations regarding the parallelization on this DSP are presented. Finally both parallelization methods in respect of performance and real time behavior are measured and analyzed.

Packaging plays a very important role in marketing. Thanks to packaging, the goods while in transit and the products located onto retail shelves are protected. In order to gain competitive advantages in the market, the way of packaging should be assessed and managed effectively. Having many advantages such as versatility, recyclability, and cheapness;corrugated boards packaging is widely used and increasing popularity in the world. Due to the high rate usage of corrugated board, the production of corrugated board becomes more of an issue. In the current situation, corrugated boards placed onto each other on pallets before delivery are counted manually. The situation leads to waste and extra cost for the factory. The approach mentioned in this paper aims to automate this process by using image processing algorithms and to eliminate all wastes related to manual counting process. There is no scientific research studied related to this problem. An algorithmic approach is applied by using sample images provided by a company corresponding to corrugated boards. Therefore, the automated counting system for corrugated board is proposed by this study.

Eyesight defects are one of the most difficult human sense failures that happen to a person. It caused struggles in reading, walking, and performing other activities that require vision. This study developed a text-reading camera with the application of a neural network image processing algorithm that will assist the legally blind in reading product labels and codes, receipts, currencies, product package labels, and other objects with text related labels. The proponents employ quantitative research design in gathering data, measurable metrics for evaluation of the developed prototype, and software development life cycle method's principles and characteristics to achieve the goal. The proponents created an actual device that reads texts within the image and transforms them into voice with the utilization of Convolution Neural Network image processing algorithm for image enhancement and quality corrections. The developed device undergoes numerous tests to ensure that the objectives of the study are really attained. The developed device was tested, validated, and evaluated by the respondents whose vision profile consists of partially sighted, normal vision, and legal blindness. Results show that device functional suitability, reliability, and performance efficiency were rated by the respondents with a grand mean equivalent to verbal interpretation of "agree," while usability and portability criterion got the lowest grand mean equivalent to verbal interpretation of "slightly agree" which means that the developed tool is useful and still commendable yet can be concluded that more innovation in the hardware components used and software application developed must be adhered to.

image processing algorithms based on time-frequency analysis are frequently used in testing and researching the mechanical properties of high-temperature materials, especially in aerospace, engines, and ships. However, due to the complexity of the high temperature environment itself, there are many factors that affect the measurement accuracy, among which the existence of thermal airflow disturbance has a particularly significant impact on the digital image correlation method. This paper mainly focuses on two aspects of high temperature edge detection and digital image correlation. On the one hand, the existing algorithm is improved to make it suitable for material property detection in high temperature environment. And relevant experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm. The full-field coefficient caching method for fitting initial values proposed in this paper has the premise that the accuracy is comparable to that of the reverse combined Gauss-Newton matching algorithm, but the running speed is improved by about 10%, and the matching accuracy of both is obviously higher than that of the surface fitting algorithm.

Development of image-Based Water Level Sensor with High-Resolution and Low-Cost Using image processing algorithm: Application to Outgassing Measurements from Gas-Enriched Polymer

A high-resolution and low-cost image-based water level sensor was developed using an image processing algorithm. The sensor measures water levels in six channels simultaneously. The image processing algorithm automatically identifies water level images and determines the water levels by analyzing the brightness of the images. The measured water levels were verified by comparison with the calibrated water levels using known length standards. The performance test results of the developed water level sensor were compared with those of commercial water level sensors, demonstrating a superior resolution of 0.06 mm and an inexpensive cost of USD 80. In addition, the developed sensor demonstrated an accuracy of 0.9%, a stability of 0.3%, an adjustable measurement range, and an instantaneous response time. In conclusion, the image-based water level sensor that was developed provides a reliable method for real-time visual monitoring of water levels in six channels simultaneously.
