Divers features of human body are being explored on daily basis for person identification based on their uniqueness to individuals. The use of fingerprint in crime investigation has come to stay, but criminals are getting smarter by protecting their fingerprints from being evidence at a crime scene. Concealing of footprint or shoe print is yet to become popular, some criminals still go bare footed to crime scene. Footprint can be secured and analysed using image processing techniques such as de-noising, image partitioning, pattern matching This research looks at the uniqueness of barefoot morphology, should in any circumstance barefoot prints are found at a scene and are required to suggest a suspect or criminal. image processing algorithms are employed to analyse barefoot prints in other to establish the unique features on the prints.

Nowadays, one of the main limiting factor in multiprocessor development is the increasing speed gap between efficient processing elements and slow main memories. To reduce this limitation, prefetching mechanisms, implemented in memory hierarchy, attempt to predict the future data needed in local memory. However, classical proposed solutions are no longer efficient for typical access sequences in the context of image processing algorithms. In this paper, a prefetching mechanism is proposed, based on the use of the index array of access rather than memory addresses. The adaptive prediction policy takes into account both application and main memory characteristics. This mechanism enhances the Cache nD-AP, formerly statically set, to improve its performance. Experiments show that the proposed adaptive strategy is able to maintain its efficiency when the characteristics of the system dynamically change.

The aim of this work is to increase the quality of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images recorded on chitosan-based films doped with gold particles of different shapes at nano- and micrometric sizes as SERS substrates for sensors. The SEM images depicting the material surface are not linearly illuminated because the contained gold particles show differences in height and distribution within the film, some of their edges being not clearly delimited. Therefore, a four-steps image quality enhancing algorithm to increase the visibility of details in SEM images is built. The proposed algorithm contains the following imaging filters: shock filter, image sharpening, homomorphic filter, contrast stretch. The advantages of using this algorithm are emphasized by a set of illustrative images consisting of the original SEM images and enhanced quality SEM images as well.

Accurately assessing flap volume and thickness is a crucial aspect of breast reconstruction using the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap, especially in challenging cases such as thin or large-breasted women or bilateral reconstruction. To address this, we present an innovative image processing tool utilizing computed tomography angiography (CTA) to measure DIEP flap volume and thickness. Our approach incorporates an elliptical equation validated on DIEP reconstruction patients. Preoperative abdominal CTA images were obtained from 70 patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction at Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge from 2017 to 2021. The image processing tool was employed for preoperative quantification, utilizing elliptical approximations, to determine the volume to be harvested and assess the central thickness of the flap. Subsequently, a non-parametric statistical retrospective analysis was conducted to examine these parameters in relation to immediate complications. The mean maximum recruitable volume (MRV) was 1017.15 +/- 325.51 cm 3, with a mean thickness of 3.65 +/- 1.14 cm. No significant correlation was found between postoperative complications and MRV or thickness values. The processing tool offers a reliable solution for accurately measuring the volume and thickness of the DIEP flap from CTA images, aiding surgeons in breast reconstruction decision-making. This innovative approach enhances surgical planning by addressing quantitative values of thickness and volume of the DIEP flap, which is critical for accurate flap assessment. (c) 2024 The Author(s). Temperature distribution on the eyes of sober and drunk persons is studied and preliminary results are given regarding temperature changes. It is observed using simple image processing algorithms and histogram modification techniques that the temperature difference between the sclera and the iris increases when somebody consumes alcohol. Iris becomes darker, which means that its temperature decreases compared to sclera temperature.

Reinforcement learning is a powerful tool for teaching robotic agents to perform tasks in real environments. Visual information provided by a camera could be a cheap and rich source of information about an agent's surroundings, if this information were represented in a compact and generalizable form. We turn to cellular neural networks as the means of transforming visual input to a representation suitable for reinforcement learning. We investigate a CNN-based image processing algorithm and describe a method for efficiently computing CNNs using the DirectX 10 API.

In this article a novel optimized image processing algorithm for replication of fast motion perception of the human visual system [1], [2] is presented. Rapid approaching objects are detected using a CMOS pixel array with internal parallel image processing. The new algorithm will be discussed with several examples. The response time is about 10mus.

image processing and computer vision algorithms extensively use projections, such as homography, as one of the processing steps. Systems for homography calculation usually observe homography as an inverse problem and provide an exact solution. However, the systems processing larger resolution images cannot meet inherently tight real-time constraints. Look-up table based systems provide an option for forward homography solutions, but they require large memory availability. Recent compressed look-up table methods reduce the memory requirements at the expense of lower peak signal-to-noise-ratio. In this work, we present a forward homography estimation algorithm which provides higher image quality than compressed look-up table methods. The algorithm is based on bounding the homography error, and neglecting the pixels out of the determined bound. The presented FPGA implementation of the estimation system requires a small amount of hardware, and no memory storage. The prototype system project an image frame onto a spherical surface at 295 Mpixels/s rate which is, up to our knowledge, currently the fastest homography system.

Information graphics, such as graphs and plots, are used in technical documents to convey information to humans and to facilitate greater understanding. Usually, graphics are a key component in a technical document, as they enable the author to convey complex ideas in a simplified visual format. However, in an automatic text recognition system, which are typically used to digitize documents, the ideas conveyed in a graphical format are lost. We contend that the message or extracted information can be used to help better understand the ideas conveyed in the document. In scientific papers, line plots are the most commonly used graphic to represent experimental results in the form of correlation present between values represented on the axes. The contribution of our work is in the series of image processing algorithms that are used to automatically extract relevant information, including text and plot from graphics found in technical documents. We validate the approach by performing the experiments on a dataset of line plots obtained from scientific documents from computer science conference papers and evaluate the variation of a reconstructed curve from the original curve. Our algorithm achieves a classification accuracy of 91 % across the dataset and successfully extracts the axes from 92 % of line plots. Axes label extraction and line curve tracing are performed successfully in about half the line plots as well.

Distance transforms as a new tool in spatial analysis, urban planning, and GIS

Many spatial datasets and spatial problems can be described with reference to regular lattice frameworks rather than continuous space. Examples include: raster scan and digital elevation model data, digital images, cost surfaces, cellular automata models, swarm models, and many others. This raises the question as to how distances should be measured in such cases and to what extent these relate to continuous space metrics. In this paper I show that a set of image processing algorithms known as distance transforms (DTs) may be applied to such datasets and can be extended to solve a wide range of 2D and 3D optimisation problems. These extended versions of the standard DT procedure have applications in many areas including location theory, path determination, planning, and decision support. As such I argue that they warrant consideration for inclusion as a standard set of tools within modern GIS and spatial analysis software packages. Sample pseudo-code for the transforms discussed is included in an appendix.
