Movement analyses of ball bearings with regard to stable and unstable cage motion behavior are often conducted by simulations, typically by investigating the cage whirl. Some experimental studies exist in which the cage is modified in order to capture its movement with sensors. This paper presents an image-based approach for investigating the cage motion without modifications, which in turn allows a cage motion analysis of an angular contact ball bearing under operation condition. Two new image evaluation algorithms are presented in detail and their suitability is verified by experiments on a bearing test rig.

Enamel microcracks (EMCs) are tiny fractures that occur in the outer layer of teeth, allowing some extrinsic stains and leading to an unaesthetic tooth. Additionally, the EMCs enhance the accumulation of plaque and thus EMCs could be highly suspectable zones for caries development. Therefore, the assessment of EMCs is crucial for early diagnosis and to prevent unwanted damage to teeth. In this study, a concealed EMCs detection and lengthmeasuring algorithm, and an EMCs width -measuring algorithm were applied for optical coherence tomography (OCT) image analysis to assess the EMCs progression in both length and width. Additionally, a surface noiseremoving algorithm was developed to obtain a better visualization of OCT cross-sectional and volumetric images. The developed algorithms were successfully used to detect concealed EMCs and track their progression in both length and width directions before and after the orthodontic treatment. Obtained results revealed a microscale progression of EMCs in both length and width directions after the orthodontic treatment, where the averaged progression of EMCs in length and width were 712.5 and 92.75 mu m, respectively. Therefore, highresolution, non-invasive OCT imaging with developed image processing algorithms can be a fruitful solution to use as a diagnostic tool to monitor the precise coordinates of concealed EMCs throughout the orthodontic treatment.

Design and optimization principles of image-processing algorithms when they are implemented on built-in processor systems

This paper presents an analysis of existing methods for designing built-in processor systems and an appropriate set of apparatus for them from the viewpoint of constructing systems that include image processing. Conclusions are drawn concerning possible configurations of this kind of systems and the set of components needed for this. The main principles for constructing image-processing systems are next indicated, along with the principles for optimizing existing algorithms for two selected design methods, using configurable systems-on-a- chip and digital signal-processing processors. A Miniaturized Particulate Matter Sensing Platform Based on CMOS imager and Real-Time image processing

A miniaturized particulate matter (PM) sensing platform was developed. The platform uses a CMOS imager as sensor, electrostatic particle collector to collect ambient PM on an imaging substrate, and a laser diode as light source to scatter light from the particles. image processing-based PM sensing algorithm was developed to obtain particle number, size, and size distribution in real time. The system is compact, power efficient, and low cost. The PM sensing platform is suitable for personal PM exposure monitoring with applications in environmental health, occupational, and epidemiological studies.

Parallel algorithms for image histogramming and connected components with an experimental study

This paper presents efficient and portable implementations of two useful primitives in image processing algorithms, histogramming and connected components. Our general framework is a single-address space, distributed memory programming model. We use efficient techniques for distributing and coalescing data as well as efficient combinations of task and data parallelism. Our connected components algorithm uses a novel approach for parallel merging which performs drastically limited updating during iterative steps, and concludes with a total consistency update at the final step. The algorithms have been coded in SPLIT-C and run on a variety of platforms. Our experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis and provide the best known execution times for these two primitives, even when compared with machine-specific implementations. We propose a new hybrid model algorithm that addresses the challenges of recognizing multiple objects. Specifically, objects are recognized from massive, large-scale, and complex tunnel images without repeated parameter adjustments and high-cost annotation datasets. Our algorithm utilizes a multi-scale, fusion-based encoder-decoder segmentation model to classify objects from high-resolution images of the tunnel surfaces. To enhance the accuracy of crack identification from complex backgrounds, we incorporate the Expanded Threshold Search (ETS) algorithm and the Local Window Extraction (LWE) algorithm. The acquisition device and the algorithm, implementing the multi-object dataset, have successfully tested, whereby it recognizes five objects and attains the highest Intersection over Union (39.3% for the crack object, 65.6% for the leakage object, and 75.7% for the rest).

Exact and reliable overlay metrology in nanoscale semiconductor devices using an image processing method

As semiconductor processing becomes more complicated and pattern sizes shrink, the overlay metrology has become one of the most important issues in the semiconductor industry. Therefore, in order to obtain correct, reliable overlay values in semiconductor fabrication facilities (fab), quantization methods for the efficient management and implementation of a measurement algorithm are required, as well as an understanding of the target structures in the semiconductor device. We implemented correct, reliable overlay values in the pattern using the image processing method. The quantization method, through correlation analysis and a new algorithm for target structures, were able to improve the sensitivity to misalignment in the pattern and enable more stable and credible in-line measurement by decreasing the distribution of the residuals in overlay values. Since overlay values of the pattern in the fab were measured and managed more reliably and quickly, it is expected that our study will be able to contribute to the yield enhancement of semiconductor companies. High-performance high dynamic range image generation by inverted local patterns

This study presents an image processing algorithm capable of generating high dynamic range (HDR) images from a single frame. On the basis of liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight theory, the proposed algorithm uses an inverted local pattern approach to adjust the histogram of lighting distribution. To improve processing efficiency, sampled images are classified into three types according to exposure characteristics, which are used to obtain suitable processing factor. The inverting factor is mixed with the original sample to darken the bright areas and brighten the dark areas in the images. Brightness enhancement and auto-gain control are then added to expand the range of the grey levels. Authors' results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed HDR algorithm in improving shadow details. In addition, single-pass processing is used to reduce computational complexity, making the algorithm applicable for low-power portable cameras and video recorders.

Parallel image processing with the block data parallel architecture

Many digital signal and image processing algorithms can be speeded up by executing them in parallel on multiple processors. The speed of parallel execution is limited by the need for communication and synchronization between processors. In this paper, we present a paradigm for parallel processing that we call the block data flow paradigm (BDFP). The goal of this paradigm-is to reduce interprocessor communication, and relax the synchronization requirements for such applications. We present the block data parallel architecture which implements this paradigm, and we present methods for mapping algorithms onto this architecture. We illustrate this methodology for several applications including two-dimensional (2-D) digital filters, the 2-D discrete cosine transform, QR decomposition of a matrix, and Cholesky factorization of a matrix. We analyze the resulting system performance for these applications with regard to speedup and efficiency as the number of processors increases. Our results demonstrate that the block data parallel architecture is a flexible, high-performance solution for numerous digital signal and image processing algorithms.

Although microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (mu PADs) get a lot of attention in the scientific literature, they rarely reach the level of commercialization. One possible reason for this is a lack of application of machine learning techniques supporting the design, optimization and fabrication of such devices. This work demonstrates the potential of two chemometric techniques including design of experiments (DoE) and digital image processing to support the production of mu PADs. On the example of a simple colorimetric assay for isoniazid relying on the protonation equilibrium of methyl orange, the experimental conditions were optimized using a D-optimal design (DO) and the impact of multiple factors on the mu PAD response was investigated. In addition, this work demonstrates the impact of automatic image processing on accelerating color value analysis and on minimizing errors caused by manual detection area selection. The employed algorithm is based on morphological recognition and allows the analysis of RGB (red, green, and blue) values in a repeatable way. In our belief, DoE and digital image processing methodologies are keys to overcome some of the remaining weaknesses in mu PAD development to facilitate their future market entry.
