In this paper, a secured web based online subjective image evaluation system has been proposed to assess different image processing algorithms. Since many image processing algorithms are designed to enhance the human perception of available image cues, subjective evaluation plays an important role in the assessment of the same. The proposed technique assesses several similar processes by accumulation of votes by individual human evaluators through pairwise comparisons of their outputs. Three tournament strategies are used for the pairwise image comparisons, namely knockout, challenging, and round-robin. The experiments show a satisfactory result in evaluation of accumulated ensemble of evaluators' votes, which is validated using Berkeley boundary detection benchmark dataset.

The development of virtual museums provides a new way for digital conservation and display of cultural relics. In virtual museums, 3D acquisition and texture seam restoration of cultural relics are key aspects, which directly affect the quality and realism of digital models. The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of different processing methods on the effect of 3D acquisition and texture seam repair of artifacts in virtual museums, and to compare their effectiveness in preserving the real features of artifacts and improving the quality of models. By screening samples of artifacts with different complex features and defects and processing them with traditional mapping texture synthesis and clone repair methods, Agrisoft photogrammetry, and hybrid methods, the study quantitatively assesses the indicators of seam repair accuracy, texture mapping consistency, and model geometric accuracy, and analyses the results of 3D capture and texture seam repair of artifacts by using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods. The results of the study show that there are significant differences between different 3D model processing methods, and that these differences are reflected in all five aspects evaluated. This study provides a basis for accuracy assessment of 3D capture and texture gap repair of artifacts in virtual museums, which helps to guide digital conservation and display in practice.

This paper proposes a low cost and small design of 3 Degrees of Freedom (3-DOF) sensors. The main objective of these sensors is to measure precisely the absolute position X,Y and theta(z) with a high resolutions. The principle of this design relies on a target with a specific periodic pattern with absolute position information encoded in it. To improve the reliability and the resolution of the absolute position of the target, we derived efficient and optimized (in term of complexity and time of computation) image processing algorithms.

Traditionally, optical remote sensing payload design satisfies highly defined specifications arrived at by consensus of the scientific constituency. Designs are constrained by required performance such as resolution, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR). Payload designers satisfy the specification by performing hardware and cost trades. This process may lack continuous feedback between the performance of the scientific algorithms and the payload design, potentially missing optimal design points. The traditional method has produced separate and specific designs for imagery (over-sampling ratio Q > 0.8) vs. radiometry (Q < 0.8). Radiometers are scientifically precise, with highly accurate scene collection over a tightly defined pixel size exclusive of other scene points, often across several spectral channels. imagers reveal sharper features, but have considerable "bleeding" of scene radiance into adjacent pixels, causing errors in application of multispectral scientific algorithms. Recently, we created end-to-end models that optimize end scientific data products by considering the payload design and data processing algorithms together, rather than simply satisfying a payload specification. In this process, we uncovered optimal payload design points and insights. We explore end-to-end modeling results that show an optimal single converged payload design, and data processing algorithms that produce simultaneous radiometer and imager products. We show how payload design choices for Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) and Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) maximize SNR for multiple data products, resulting in an optimized design that increases flexibility of space assets. This approach is beneficial as we move towards distributed and fused image systems.

Line following robots requires image acquisition and processing algorithms for the determination of the line trajectory. The Viterbi algorithm is proposed for the estimation of the line trajectory in this paper. The robustness of this algorithm is verified using the Monte Carlo approach for two distortions types: additive Gaussian noise and false lines sets. The results show possibilities of reliable estimation, even if the real line is hidden in the noise, without the application of additional estimators based on the previous measurements.

In order to realize the on-line detection and elimination of unqualified can covers, a binary-channel inspection system based on machine vision is proposed in this article. The system mainly consists of two illumination sources, two cameras, two sensors, an IPC, an interface circuit, two eliminating devices, a set of algorithms for image processing and a software for the control of independent binary-channel. In working status, each channel of the system is placed directly above a conveyor, which transports can covers to the detection position so that the camera is triggered, and then an image is captured with a flash. The cover images are transferred to the IPC and then processed by the algorithm that based on template matching and variation model. Depending on the processing results unqualified covers are eliminated. The system is proved to be non-pollution, low-cost, and defects such as double covers, no glue, shoulder scratch, distortion can be detected with a 98.7% accuracy and a speed of 1200 covers per minute.

Information graphics, such as graphs and plots, are used in technical documents to convey information to humans and to facilitate greater understanding. Usually, graphics are a key component in a technical document, as they enable the author to convey complex ideas in a simplified visual format. However, in an automatic text recognition system, which are typically used to digitize documents, the ideas conveyed in a graphical format are lost. We contend that the message or extracted information can be used to help better understand the ideas conveyed in the document. In scientific papers, line plots are the most commonly used graphic to represent experimental results in the form of correlation present between values represented on the axes. The contribution of our work is in the series of image processing algorithms that are used to automatically extract relevant information, including text and plot from graphics found in technical documents. We validate the approach by performing the experiments on a dataset of line plots obtained from scientific documents from computer science conference papers and evaluate the variation of a reconstructed curve from the original curve. Our algorithm achieves a classification accuracy of 91 % across the dataset and successfully extracts the axes from 92 % of line plots. Axes label extraction and line curve tracing are performed successfully in about half the line plots as well.

Evaluation of advanced sensing systems for Autonomous Vehicle Navigation (AVN) is currently carried out off-line with prerecorded image sequences taken by physically attaching the sensors to the ego-vehicle. The data collection process is cumbersome and costly as well as highly restricted to specific road environments and weather conditions. This work proposes the use of scientific animation in modelling and representation of real-world traffic scenes and aims to produce an efficient, reliable and cost-effective concept evaluation suite for AVN sensing algorithms. ROSE is organised in a modular fashion consisting of the route generator, the journey generator, the sequence description generator and the renderer. The application was developed in MATLAB and POV-Ray was selected as the rendering module. User-friendly graphical user interfaces have been designed to allow easy selection of animation parameters and monitoring of the generation process. The system, in its current form, allows the generation of various traffic scenarios, providing for an adequate number of static/dynamic objects, road types acid environmental conditions. Initial tests on the robustness of various image processing algorithms to varying lighting and weather conditions have been already carried out.
