Design and implementation of MIMO radar real-time imaging system based on multicore DSP

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) imaging radar is a new kind of new imaging radar in recent years. It can achieve faster data acquisition speed than the traditional ground-based SAR due to the ability to get a large number of multi-channel data in a short period of time. However, traditional single-core digital signal processors (DSPs) have limited space and ability to deal with such large amount of data. To solve this problem, a real-time image processing software architecture for MIMO imaging radar algorithm is designed and carried out based on TMS320C6678 DSP of Texas Instruments (TI), which is the highest-performance fixed/floating-point DSP based on TI's KeyStone multicore architecture. The efficient imaging algorithms mapping from Matlab to DSP is realised, with efficient task allocation, resource reuse of echo data, and processing variable, and using the method of multicore parallel processing.

Interpolation-free algorithm for persistent multi-frame imaging of video-SAR

Video synthetic aperture radar (ViSAR) can produce sequential images at a high frame rate, which provides a persistent surveillance over a region of interest. However, due to position changes of different apertures, most of existing imaging algorithms fail since the orientation and resolution of each frame image will change accordingly. In this article, based on the high centre frequency characteristic of ViSAR, an interpolation-free algorithm for persistent multi-frame imaging is proposed. The proposed algorithm can be implemented by only two-dimensional fast Fourier transforms without any image post-processing, thus both the efficiency and quality of imaging are obtained at the same time. Simulation and real data results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Current microwave breast cancer imaging algorithms focus primarily on generating an image, and provide little machinery for interpretation of the image. Within-image contrast is commonly used as a performance metric, but a better reflection of the tumour detection capability of an algorithm is the difference between the maximum voxel intensities observed in images from scans of tumour-free and tumour-bearing breasts. This paper extends existing imaging algorithms by incorporating an automatic tumour detection technique that involves classification based on maximum voxel intensities. We compare results obtained from different algorithms on the data collected from healthy breast scans performed during clinical trials of a microwave radar system. We artificially inject tumour signals that are constructed based on the transmission properties of the radar system and the estimated breast tissue properties. The results provide insights into which algorithms are sufficiently robust to handle discrepancies between the real measurement data and the modeling assumptions.

In the inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging, the autofocus is a required step for generating high-quality images. However, due to many factors, the aperture data may be sparse so that the classical motion compensation approaches and imaging algorithms are not proper. On the basis of the compressed sensing technique and two optimisation methods (the gradient projection method and the conjugate gradient method), a novel autofocus algorithm, which can be used in sparse aperture imaging, is proposed in this Letter. The phase errors induced by the translational Doppler frequency are estimated and the focused image is reconstructed simultaneously by dual iterative computation. This approach is verified by real data processing.

Radiological diagnostics of pediatric lungs

Pediatric lung diseases are a common clinical problem. Besides the clinical examination and laboratory tests, imaging studies are the mainstay in the diagnostics of pediatric lung diseases. Thorough consideration of radiation protection based on optimized equipment also includes the protection of relatives and medical staff. The high impact of radiation protection in children necessitates a different choice of imaging modalities compared to adults. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as adjunct or complementary imaging methods are of greater value than computed tomography (CT). The suspicion of pneumonia is the most common reason for chest imaging examinations in children. An anteroposterior or posteroanterior view chest X-ray is sufficient in most cases and sometimes in combination with ultrasound. The latter can also be used alone for follow-up examinations if the clinical presentation does not change. Additionally, ultrasound is applied to examine unclear structures seen on chest X-rays, such as the thymus or pulmonary sequestration in adjunct with color-coded duplex sonography. A chest X-ray is also the method of choice to examine the various forms of respiratory distress syndrome, such as wet lung disease or surfactant deficiency syndrome in newborns. Fluoroscopy is used in older children with suspected ingestion and/or aspiration of foreign bodies and CT is mostly used for staging and follow-up of thoracic and pulmonary structures in pediatric oncology. Recent technical advances, e.g. iterative reconstruction, have dramatically reduced the CT dosage. Apart from some indications (e.g. tumors and sequestration) MRI is rarely used in children;however, its potential for functional analyses (e.g. perfusion and ventilation) may increase the application in the near future.

High range resolution of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can be obtained by using the stepped-frequency technique, but it is still a problem how spectrum reconstruction methods can be combined correctly and effectively with SAR imaging algorithms. This paper analyzes the feasibilities of all the potential combinations between spectrum reconstruction methods and SAR imaging algorithms, and the optimal combinations are proposed. The simulation results verify the analysis in this paper.

GPU computing of medical imaging applications adds an extra layer of acceleration after mathematical algorithms are used to reduce computation times. Our work improves the performance of the multiple-input multiple-output ultrasonic tomography algorithm, by using target sparseness and GPUs with CUDA. The main goal was to determine how GPUs can be best used to accelerate sparsity-aware algorithms for ultrasonic tomography applications. We present smart kernels to compute portions of the algorithm that exploit GPU resources such as shared memory and computing units that can be applied to other applications. Using our accelerated algorithm, we analyze different sparsity constraints setups and evaluate how GPU ultrasonic tomography with target sparseness behaves against the same algorithm that does not incorporate prior knowledge of target sparseness.

We consider the problem of locating perfectly conducting cracks and estimating their geometric features from multistatic response matrix measurements at a single or multiple frequencies. A main objective is to design specific crack detection rules and to analyze their receiver operating characteristics and the associated signal-to-noise ratios. In this paper we introduce an analytic framework that uses asymptotic expansions which are uniform with respect to the wavelength-to-crack size ratio in combination with a hypothesis test based formulation to construct specific procedures for detection of perfectly conducting cracks. A central ingredient in our approach is the use of random matrix theory to characterize the signal space associated with the multistatic response matrix measurements. We present numerical experiments to illustrate some of our main findings.

Concern regarding incidental findings on brain MRI studies has been increasing with the growing use of MRI as tool for scientific investigation. In this article, the authors provide an overview of possible approaches to address incidental findings. Incidental findings are surprisingly common (5%-20% of all examinations), although the percentage of clinically serious abnormalities is low (0.3%-3.4%). At present, there is no consensus concerning the optimal strategy on how to deal with incidental findings, in particular how to fulfill ethical responsibilities appropriately within the constraints of available resources. There are a variety of responses possible, and currently, reasonable guidelines exist for formulating a plan tailored to the needs of each institution that will meet the reasonable expectations of subjects participating in brain research studies.

The channelized Hotelling observer (CHO) has become a widely used approach for evaluating medical image quality, acting as a surrogate for human observers in early-stage research on assessment and optimization of imaging devices and algorithms. Its popularity stems from experiments showing that, when an internal-noise model is introduced, the CHO's detection performance can be tuned to correlate well with human observers' detection performance. Typically, this tuning is achieved using example data obtained from human observers. Thus, it can be argued that this tuning step is essentially a model training exercise;therefore, just as in supervised learning, it is essential to test the CHO model on a set of data that is distinct from that used to tune the model. Furthermore, the test data should be significantly different from the training data if the CHO is to provide useful insight about new imaging algorithms or devices. Motivated by these considerations, in this work a train-test approach was proposed, with new models selection criterions, and used to evaluate ten established internal noise models utilizing four different channel models. I also propose a new internal noise model (although not the main intention of this work) which I, incidentally, find outperforms the ten established models. The results show that the proposed train-test approach is necessary, with the newly proposed model selection criterions, for avoiding spurious conclusions. It was also demonstrate that, in some CHO models, the optimal internal-noise parameter is very sensitive to the choice of training data;therefore, these models are prone to overfitting, and will not likely generalize well to new data.
