Mining user preferences, page content and usage to personalize website navigation

The growing availability of information on the web has raised a challenging problem: can a web-based information system tailor itself to different user requirements with the ultimate goal of personalizing and improving the users' experience in accessing the contents of a website? This paper proposes a new approach to website personalization based on the exploitation of user browsing interests together with content and usage similarities among web pages. The outcome is the delivery of page recommendations which are strictly related to the navigational purposes of visitors and their actual location within the cyberspace of the website. Our approach has been used effectively for developing a non-invasive system which allows web users to navigate through potentially interesting pages without having a basic knowledge of the website structure.

In the last few years, a lot of research has been devoted to developing new techniques for improving the recall and the precision of current web search engines. Few works deal with the interesting problem of identifying the communities to which pages belong. Most of the previous approaches try to cluster data by means of spectral techniques or by means of traditional hierarchical algorithms. The main problem with these techniques is that they ignore the relevant fact that web communities are social networks with distinctive statistical properties. In this paper we analyze web communities on the basis of the evolution of an initial set of hubs and authoritative pages. The evolution law captures the behaviour of page authors with respect to the popularity of existing pages for the topics of interest. Assuming such a model, we have found interesting properties of web communities. On the basis of these properties we have proposed a technique for computing relevant properties for specific topics. Several experiments confirmed the validity of both the model and identification method.

The proliferation of information available on the world wide web and the new emerging technologies that have reduced the barriers in organizing and publishing documents, have made the support for navigation and personalization of web sites an appealing and promising task for the web community. One of the most challenging activities in the design of modern sites which goes beyond any particular domain consists of making the process of retrieving relevant documents easier. This paper proposes a new technique for web navigation based on current algorithms used in Recommendation Systems. Our approach identifies really relevant documents adopting methodologies similar to those successfully used in current search engines. This approach has been effectively used for the implementation of a lightweight web site personalization tool, that permits to navigate towards relevant web pages regardless of the original web site structure.

Search set-vices on hyperlinked data are becoming popular among users because of the huge amount of data available and the consequent difficulty in retrieving and filtering relevant documents. Traditional Term-Based search engines are not very useful for this purpose since the resulting ranking depends on the users's precision in expressing the query. Current research, instead, takes a different approach, called Topic Distillation, which consists in finding documents related to the query topic, but these do not necessarily contain the query string. Current algorithms for topic distillation first compute a base set containing all the relevant pages and then apply an iterative procedure to obtain the authoritative pages. In this paper we present STED, a system for topic distillation and enumeration (i.e. identification of different communities) of web documents. The system is based on a technique which computes the authoritative pages by analyzing the structure of the base set. More specifically, the system applies a, statistic approach to the co-citation matrix associated with the base set, to find the most co-cited pages and analyzes both the link structure and the content of pages. Several experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the system.

In this paper, a method of automatically classifying web documents into a set of categories using the fuzzy association concept is proposed. Using the same word or vocabulary to describe different entities creates ambiguity, especially in the web environment where the user population is large. To solve this problem, fuzzy association is used to capture the relationships among different index terms or keywords in the documents, i.e., each pair of words has an associated value to distinguish itself from the others. Therefore, the ambiguity in word usage is avoided. Experiments using data sets collected from two web portals: Yahoo! (***) and Open Directory, Project (***) are conducted. We compare our approach to the vector space model with the cosine coefficient. The results show that our approach yields higher accuracy compared to the vector space model.
