Supporting inheritance hierarchy changes in model-based regression test selection

Models can be used to ease and manage the development, evolution, and runtime adaptation of a software system. When models are adapted, the resulting models must be rigorously tested. Apart from adding new test cases, it is also important to perform regression testing to ensure that the evolution or adaptation did not break existing functionality. Since regression testing is performed with limited resources and under time constraints, regression test selection (RTS) techniques are needed to reduce the cost of regression testing. Applying model-level RTS for model-based evolution and adaptation is more convenient than using code-level RTS because the test selection process happens at the same level of abstraction as that of evolution and adaptation. In earlier work, we proposed a model-based RTS approach called MaRTS to be used with a fine-grained model-based adaptation framework that targets applications implemented in Java. MaRTS uses UML models consisting of class and activity diagrams. It classifies test cases as obsolete, reusable, or retestable based on changes made to UML class and activity diagrams of the system being adapted. However, MaRTS did not take into account the changes made to the inheritance hierarchy in the class diagram and the impact of these changes on the selection of test cases. This paper extends MaRTS to support such changes and demonstrates that the extended approach performs as well as or better than code-based RTS approaches in safely selecting regression test cases. While MaRTS can generally be used during any model-driven development or model-based evolution activity, we have developed it in the context of runtime adaptation. We evaluated the extended MaRTS on a set of applications and compared the results with code-based RTS approaches that also support changes to the inheritance hierarchy. Class inheritance is a powerful concept in objectoriented modeling. Persisting objects from an inheritance hierarchy into a relational database is not straight forward, because the concept of inheritance is not supported by relational data stores. An accepted solution are object-relational mapping strategies. The problem is that each strategy varies in terms of its non-functional characteristics e.g., usability, maintainability, efficiency. Software developers base the decision, what mapping strategy to chose, on experience and best practices. Most of these best practices can be found in programming guides for objectrelational mapping frameworks or books and publications of experienced software architects. However, these best practices are based on experiences with row-oriented database systems. With the advent of new database technologies, such as column-stores, these best practices become obsolete. In my Ph. D. thesis I am investigating the influence of a database's data layout (row-vs. column) on the non-functional characteristics of object-relational mapping strategies.

Clone analysis and visualization help in understanding characteristics of clones and indicate potential clones as cost-effective candidates for refactoring. Many studies have analyzed clones and their evolution while a number of techniques have also been proposed for visualizing clones for aiding clone analysis. However, clone analyses and visualizations with respect to inheritance hierarchy and call graphs have remained ignored so far. In this position paper, we argue that such analyses and visualizations are necessary to help in dealing with clones for refactoring.

This paper proposes an exception handling mechanism for developing reliable object-oriented systems based on analyzing some problems encountered in the C++ programming language. The exceptions are organized into a knowledge sharing inheritance hierarchy and the handlers can be defined within exception classes. This enables the information to be hidden. The separation between the normal codes and the exception handling codes makes the program neat and maintainable. It supports both the termination and the retry model. Binding the exception to the object responsible for its raise can solve the issue of matching the handler relying on only the exception type.

Information exchanged between computer applications is difficult, thus the need for data exchange standards. The ISO STEP project defines data exchange standards using the EXPRESS language, which supports inheritance. Currently there are two algorithms used to evaluate an inheritance hierarchy: the Test and Generate algorithms. In this thesis, enhancements are made to both algorithms to support the Total Over Constraint, which is proposed for the third edition of EXPRESS. A formal algorithm is derived for the Test algorithm. The two enhanced algorithms are compared and shown to be result equivalent. However, it is shown that the Test algorithm is the more efficient of the two.

Subtyping test, i.e., determining whether one type is a subtype of another, are a frequent operation during the execution of object-oriented programs. The challenge is in encoding the hierarchy in a small space, while simulataneously making sure that subtyping tests have efficient implmentation. We present a new scheme for encoding multiple and single inheritance hierarchies, which, in the standardized hierarchies, reduces the footprint of all previsously published schemes. The scheme is called PQ-encoding after PQ-trees, a data structure previously used in graph theory for finding the orderings that satisfy a collection of constraints. In particular, we show that in the traditional object layout model, the extra memory requirement for single inheritance hierarchies is zero. In the PQ-encoding subtyping tests are constant time, and use only two comparisons. Other than PQ-trees, PQ-encoding uses several novel optimization techniques. These techniques are applicable also in improving the performance of otehr, previously published, encoding schemes.

An object-oriented database (OODB) has been becoming more important in recent years. It can deal with a large amount of complex objects and relationships that relational database (RDB) systems cannot handle well. However, the retrieval and update performance of an OODB depends on indexing techniques. In this paper, we study the indexing techniques on OODBs, based on an inheritance hierarchy and an aggregation hierarchy. Given the access probability and the size of each class, we propose a cost function to evaluate the gain of building an index on an inheritance hierarchy. For an aggregation hierarchy, we use a path-catenation technique to evaluate how to build index files on classes, Through some experiments, we found our methods have better retrieval performance than most ones proposed before. Software metrics serve as a significant issue to improve software quality. It is an important research of software engineering. In line with the methodologies of object-oriented analysis and design widely developed, many software metrics techniques have been proposed. However, not many focus on the metrics evaluation of an inheritance hierarchy. In this paper, we propose a novel concept named unit repeated inheritance (URI) in Z notation to realize object-oriented software metrics. The approach describes an inheritance level technique (ILT) method as a guide to measure the software complexity of an inheritance hierarchy. The measures of inheritance metrics are formed based on the proposed mechanism. Also, we use Lex and Ya;cc to construct a windowing tool which is used in conjunction with a conventional C++ programming environment to assist a programmer to analyze and measure his/her C++ programs.

Software metrics have been a key strategy for software engineers to assure software quality and measure software complexity for many years. However, the complexity metrics of object inheritance hierarchies have not yet been carefully studied. This paper proposes an inheritance level-based metric for measuring the object-oriented software complexity of an inheritance hierarchy. We introduce an algorithm which is proved to be complete and sound to decompose an inheritance hierarchy into a number of measured elements, namely, unit repeated inheritances (URIs). We use the Z specification to model the inheritance hierarchy and describe an inheritance level technique (ILT) based on URIs as a guide to measure the inheritance hierarchy. The proposed metric shows that inheritance has a close relation to object-oriented software complexity. The metric also reveals that overuse of repeated (multiple) inheritance will increase software complexity and thus is prone to implicit software errors. The measurement of inheritance metrics is formed based on the proposed mechanism. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
