Temperature control of polypropylene thermal cracking reactor by input/output linearization with two-degree-of-freedom structure

This work presents a model-based controller with a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) control structure for handling bed temperature of polypropylene cracking in a fluidized bed reactor. The control system is formulated based on a developed dynamic mathematical model of the reactor. The developed control system consists of an input/output (I/O) linearizing controller for tracking the desired output, a high-gain controller for disturbance rejection and an observer with linearizable error dynamics for compensated state variables from the measured outputs. The control performances of the method are evaluated through simulation under process uncertainties and model mismatch by comparing with a 1DOF input/output controller and a proportional-integral controller. The results show that the proposed controller based on 2DOF scheme can improve the control performances both process uncertainties and model mismatch. (C) 2015 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. This work presents a new method to control processes with unmeasured input disturbance and random noise parametric uncertainty. The developed method takes advantage of a two-degree-of-freedom control structure in which setpoint regulation and load disturbance rejection are integrated in the controller synthesis. input/output linearization is selected to provide the setpoint tracking ability. For disturbance rejection, the high-gain technique is used to compensate for the effect of the uncertainty. The control performance of the method is evaluated through numerical simulation of continuous stirred tank reactors with uncertainty. The simulation results show that both unmeasured disturbance and parametric uncertainty can be effectively compensated for by the proposed control method.

Separation of two immiscible liquids by a decanter is an important unit operation widely used in petrochemical processes. However, fluctuations in the feed stream create a difficulty in achieving the desired product by such a unit due to the limitations of interface detection and entrainment of heavy phase into a light phase. This research proposes techniques for estimating and controlling the interface position. The interface position is calculated by using information from an ultrasonic sensor and a pressure transducer. An input/output linearizing controller is applied to control the interface position and total liquid height by adjusting the outflows of each liquid phase. A real-time estimator predicts the feed fraction that cannot be measured directly. The proposed method is evaluated through servo and regulatory tests with a bench-scale palm-oil/water decanter. The experimental results show that the developed method forces outputs to desired setpoints effectively despite the presence of feed disturbances. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article provides a comparison of control strategies for an economically attractive vapor-recompressed batch distillation (VRBD) column. A VRBD column exhibits nonlinear dynamics with strong inter-stream interactions due to energy-integration, which can give rise to difficulties in controlling the operation using traditional linear controllers. In this paper, we propose and compare model-based control strategies such as linear quadratic regulator (LQR), linear model predictive control (LMPC) and Globally linearizing controller (GLC) for a VRBD column to achieve desired distillate purity with minimum energy consumption. The effectiveness of these control strategies is illustrated using a simulation case study of benzene/toluene separation in a VRBD column. This paper presents the modeling and control of two techniques for the induction machine "IM": a chattering-free Sliding Mode Controller based on Integrated Control (SMIC) and a PI based control technique. input/output linearization will be used to ensure a decoupled control of the different outputs as well as the stability of the system. The proposed approach is designed for improving the system stability, behaviour and performance. The SMIC yield more accuracy and reduces the chattering resulting from the high frequency control switching. The controller performance is demonstrated via result of simulation in which the proposed controller effectiveness is compared to conventional PI.

Multivariable control of the polymer molecular weight in emulsion polymerization processes

A multivariable control strategy is developed to control the polymer molecular weight in emulsion polymerization processes while maximizing the reaction rate by manipulating the jacket temperature and the monomer flowrate. In order to take into account the process nonlinearity, input-output linearizing control is considered. A cascade of two nonlinear observers is developed to estimate the heat of the reaction and the number of moles of radicals in the polymer particles. By introducing these estimations and the available measurements into the process model, the polymer molecular weight could be estimated online. The online estimation and control strategy was validated experimentally in seeded emulsion polymerization of styrene for which the model of the molecular weight is well known. It was also validated for the methyl methacrylate monomer where a simplified model was identified. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The linearization of an input/output controller has been designed for an input time delay nonlinear time discretized nonlinear system. The time discretized nonlinear model has been obtained based on Taylor-Lie series expansion method and zero order hold assumption. The resulting control algorithm enables the time delay nonlinear system control, while the continuous time controller cannot handle a time delay nonlinear system due to its infinite dimensionality. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated by using two different case studies: a Van Der Pol equation and a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) system that all exhibit nonlinear behavior and input time delay. For all the case studies, the results validate the proposed methods.

In most physical processes, the transfer function includes a time-delay, and in the general distributed control system using a computer network, an inherent time-delay exists due to the spatial separation between controllers and actuators. Under the circumstance where an input time-delay exits, the system response overshoots and tends to diverge. For this reasons described above, a controller design method is proposed for a discrete nonlinear system including input time-delay, which adopts the time-discretization using Taylor series. Controllers are synthesized using an input/output linearization method. Finally, several cases of the computer simulations were conducted, and the results validate the proposed methods.

Nonlinear adaptive co-ordinated control of multimachine power systems

This paper presents a novel nonlinear adaptive controller (NAC) for the co-ordinated control of generators and thyristor-controlled series compensators (TCSCs) in multimachine power systems. Discussions begin with power system de-coupling which is achieved by Lie differentiation. For each subsystem, the nonlinear adaptive control strategy is, at first, investigated based on the input/output feedback linearizing control. In this strategy, a fictitious state is defined to represent the combined effect of system nonlinearities, uncertainties and external disturbances and an extended-order sliding mode observer is employed to estimate the states and the fictitious state of the subsystem, which allows the NAC to be designed without requiring the knowledge of system nonlinearities and parameters. The NAC is then implemented locally, involving the external dynamics of the subsystem, which is estimated by the observer, for the co-ordinated control of generators and TCSCs in the multimachine power system. Simulation studies are undertaken based on a three-machine power system to evaluate the effectiveness of the NAC. The simulation results show that the locally installed NACs can coordinate each other to improve the power system stability.

This paper presents a new observer-based nonlinear controller (ONC) for excitation control of synchronous generators. The observer-based nonlinear control is basically an input/output feedback linearizing control of nonlinear systems but it employs output feedback and perturbation estimation. A sliding mode observer is used to estimate system states and a fictitious state which is introduced to represent the combinatorial effect of system uncertainties and nonlinearities. The successful estimation of states and perturbation allows the input/output linearization of the nonlinear system without requiring the accurate model. This constitutes a real-time: compensation mechanism against the perturbations. The new ONC has main advantages of simple structure and robust performance. Simulations studies based on a single-machine quasi-infinite bus power system are undertaken to evaluate the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the ONC can provide superior performance in comparison with that obtained using the conventional model based state feedback Linearizing controller.
