Reasonable sets of input parameters and output distributions for simulation of seismicity

This paper aims to establish a balance between the input parameters used in modeling seismic and aseismic events, and the data that are available in a mine. With regard to the input parameters, their minimal set is suggested. For output seismic parameters, we distinguish three groups of statistical distributions provided by field observations of various quality. The first group includes distributions of the event location. They serve for improving the data on geometrical features of a problem. The second group employs distributions of the event magnitude. They serve for evaluating the risk of strong events. The third group employs distributions of the geometrical parameters of the event source mechanism. They serve for connecting stresses and seismicity. The exposition is illustrated by considering an example of long-wall mining of a coal seam. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Investigating the effect of input parameters on tool wear in incremental sheet metal forming

Over the years incremental sheet metal forming (ISMF) has developed as a futuristic technique in which the metal sheets are transformed into the final product with the use of a solid metallic rod having a designed end, rather than a dedicated die. The production lead time is quite high in this process as compared to the conventional sheet forming methods. ISMF is most suitable for developing model for the purpose of research and development, manufacturing of the customized part and for low-volume production. Tool life is an important criterion for determining feasibility of any manufacturing process. The sliding of the forming tool over the clamped metal worksheet during the ISMF is another important aspect for understanding the tool-wearing behaviour. The present study has investigated the wearing of the 440C grade steel forming tool during the ISMF of aluminum grade AA3003-O. It has examined the process statistically to establish that the step downsize (P = 0.021) and sheet metal thickness (P = 0.005) significantly influence the wearing of 440C steel tool. The coefficient of performance, i.e., R2 has been reported as 92.0 % with an adjusted R2 of 81.9 %.

Dimensionless input parameters in discrete element modeling and assessment of scaling techniques

A set of dimensionless input parameters were defined for DEM using a characteristic time which is a function of density and elastic modulus of particles and an arbitrary characteristic length. Dimensionless strain rate and mass damping ratio are inversely proportional to the characteristic time, and stress is normalized by elastic modulus to give dimensionless stress. It was demonstrated that the response of a model in the dimensionless scale is invariant with the choice of density, elastic modulus and the characteristic length if dimensionless strain rate and mass damping ratio are kept constant. Small time step is a prohibitive aspect of DEM. Scaling techniques are widely employed to enlarge the time step. Using the dimensionless scheme, it was learned that density scaling is equivalent to the use of a higher strain rate, and stiffness scaling results in a higher strain rate and an elevated stress state in the dimensionless scale. Predicting the flow behavior of particles is important for the equipment design and optimization of processes and operations involving granular materials. Simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) have been used to gain insights about the granular flow, but the correct use of this technique requires knowledge about the input parameters. However, reliable measurements of these parameters remain a challenge. The purpose of this study was to test and validate experimental methodologies for determining important DEM parameters, including the coefficients of restitution and static and rolling friction, for the particle-particle and particle-wall interactions. The experimental tests were reproduced using DEM simulation to enable the identification of the best procedure for measuring each parameter. The influence of the thickness of the material on which the particles are colliding on the experimental measurement of the coefficient of restitution were quantified. It was also performed a deep statistical analysis of the simulations results using experimental design techniques to identify the significant input parameter in each measurement technique, using loose and grouped particles.

Derivation of optimal input parameters for minimizing execution time of matrix-based computations on a GPU

As GPUs are continually being utilized as coprocessors, the demand for optimally utilizing them for various computations continues to grow. The goal of this work is to derive input parameters which yield the minimum execution time for matrix-based computations executing on a GPU. input parameters are defined as the dimensions of the grid and blocks assigned for execution on the GPU. Since input parameters inadequately represent the executional behavior of the GPU, execution metrics are formulated as functions of the input parameters to represent the behavior. The execution metrics are architecture independent and are utilized to derive optimal input parameters, which are input parameters that yield the minimum execution time. Optimal input parameters are derived for the following matrix-based computations: matrix-vector multiplication (Mv), matrix-matrix multiplication (MM), and convolution. The derivation allows for selection of optimal input parameters without executing code. Results, for all matrix-based computations and sizes tested, show that utilizing the derived optimal input parameters often yields the minimum execution time, and, at worst, execution time within 13.6% of the minimum. Sensitivity analysis on the input parameters in probabilistic seismic hazard assessment

A project has been implemented in recent years for assessing seismic hazard in the Italian territory on probabilistic bases, to be used as scientific background for the revision of the current seismic zonation. A consolidated approach was considered for the purpose: seismic hazard was estimated in terms of peak ground acceleration and macroseismic intensity. As the computer code employed allows the user to make specific choices on some input data, some rather unorthodox decisions were taken regarding earthquake catalogue completeness, seismicity rates, boundaries of the seismogenic zones, definition of the maximum magnitude, attenuation relation, etc. The overwhelming amount of geological and seismological data for Italy (just consider, for example, that the earthquake catalogue collects events which occurred over the last ten centuries) permits the operator to make different choices, more or less cautiously. It is quite interesting, then, to evaluate the influence of the specific choices on the final hazard results as a comparison to traditional possibilities. The tests performed clearly indicate the critical choices and quantify their contribution. In particular, we consider thorough comprehension of the space geometry of the earthquake source boundaries and the adequacy of the attenuation relation in modelling the radiation pattern very important. Building energy assessment is essential to accomplish the sustainable energy targets of new and present buildings. Retrofitting of the existing buildings by assessing them through energy models is the most prominent method. Studies revealed that there is still blank information about the building stocks, and these affect the valuation of building energy efficiency policies. Literature also recommends that the existing energy models are too complex and unreliable to predict the energy use. Reliability of such energy models would improve through a better alignment of the input parameters and the model assumptions. The authors hypothesized that the reliability of models would be improved through identification of the most relevant energy use parameters for the building stocks in different regions and models. One of the most commonly accepted methods for detecting the most dominant input parameters is sensitivity analysis, though its shortcomings include the need for a large number of data samples and long computing time. In this research, the Energy, Carbon, and Cost Assessment for Buildings Stocks (ECCABS) model is adopted to identify the most important parameters of the presented model. The research team uses the model that has been validated by studies conducted for the UK building stock. Moreover, by assessing the feasibility study with the stepwise regression to identify the significant input parameters have been discussed. Results show that stepwise regression method could produce the same results compared to sensitivity analysis. This paper also indicates that stepwise regression is considerably faster and less computationally intensive compared to common sensitivity analysis methods.

Neural network is the universal approximator, but its precision highly depends on sufficient set of inputs. Cryptocurrencies have great volatility, due to absence of fundamentals to back up their price. In this paper we analyze approaches to obtain additional parameters for neural networks and explore their impact on its prediction accuracy. This study indicates significant improvement of neural network predictions due to inclusion of wider selection of relevant data points.

The ability to create a metrication equation of LPI performance based on input parameters is certainly feasible, as has been demonstrated here. The main obstacle to confront is the identification of what LPI is and the situational parameters in which it will be used, including system purpose and ESM receiver type. This study considers the following LPI waveformS: Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM), Sinusoidal Frequency Modulation (Sin FM), Poly-Phase Shift Keying (PPSK) techniques including Frank, P1, P2, P3, and P4 codes Costas code Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), and Costas-Barker Hybrid (FSK/PSK). This work represents the first attempt to be published in the open literature to quantify the LPI properties of transmitted radar waveforms. Secure waveform coding strategies to minimize the risk of divulging radar capabilities is known as low probability of exploitation (LPE) and is not considered here.

Weld surfacing helps to reap the benefits of superior quality of surfacing material with the low cost of base material. Weld surfacing is popular for manufacturing corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high temperature materials. Submerged Metal Arc Welding and Metal Inert Gas Welding are the most common methods used in weld surfacing. MIG welding is easy to use, fast, good weld quality and good penetration so it is most popular. Stainless steel and Nickel are the most popular surfacing materials. Results have shown considerable improvements in properties like wear resistance and corrosion resistance after weld surfacing. This project work aims to develop the mathematical model for the effect of Welding speed, feed rate and Voltage on the bead geometry and weld dilution. Statistical method using Central Composite rotatable factorial design was used to carry out the experiment with all the three factors at five levels. The analysis of result was done by Response Surface Methodology (RSM).
