Weld surfacing is an emerging field that can be used to combine the superior qualities of surfacing materials with the low cost of the base material. Weld surfacing can be used for corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high temperature applications. Submerged Metal Arc Welding and Metal Inert Gas Welding are the most common methods used in weld surfacing. MIG welding is used extensively as it is easy to use, fast, good weld quality and good penetration. Stainless steel and Nickel are the most widely used surfacing metals on the structural steel. Results found after performing various tests like Vickers hardness test have shown considerable improvements in properties like wear resistance and corrosion resistance after weld surfacing. This project work aims to develop the mathematical model for the effect of input parameters namely Welding speed, wire feed rate and Voltage on the weld bead geometry and weld dilution. Statistical method using Central Composite rotatable factorial design was used to carry out the experiment with all the three factors at five levels. The analysis of result was done by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). ANOVA analysis was done to check the adequacy of the models and parameters were also optimized for weld surfacing. Effect of some input parameters on 3D basin and petroleum systems modelling: A case study of the norwegian section of the northern North Sea

The objective of this study is to test the influence of some key input parameters in basin modelling and to evaluate the resultant effect of varying these parameters on the model. 3D basin modelling and petroleum system analysis of the northern North Sea has been carried out using the PETROMOD software. The model was calibrated using well 34/8-7 in the Visund field. Different input parameters such as heat flow, source rock properties, fault properties, paleo water depth, source rock kinetics, migration methods and different erosion scenarios have been varied and their effects on the model assessed. The effect of the various input parameters has been assessed in terms of hydrocarbon volumes in the Kvitebjørn and Visund fields, source rock maturity, transformation ratios, hydrocarbon saturations and the time hydrocarbon generation began in the Draupne and Heather Formation source rocks. Increase in heat flow increases source rock maturity, the start of hydrocarbon generation, transformation ratios and results in the generation of a lot more gas than oil. Hydrocarbon generation starts at shallower depths with higher heat flow. Increasing Total Organic Content (TOC) and Hydrogen Index (HI) generally results in increase in the volume of hydrocarbons generated. The increase in HI, however, results in the generation of a lot more oil than gas. High TOC and HI also increase the hydrocarbon saturations in the source rock. Increasing Paleo Water Depth (PWD) has a marginal effect on the model. It increases the volume of oil and decreases the volume of gas marginally. Varying the PWD has no significant effect on source rock maturity, transformation ratios and hydrocarbon saturations. Opening the fault planes resulted in an increase in the volume of hydrocarbons generated. The increase was more evident in the volume of oil than gas. The paper presents results and sensitivity analysis of the results of a real detailed study focused on changes in water consumption and its unevenness with changing pressure conditions in a particular observed office building. The dependence of water consumption on pressure is expressed using the FAVAD equation using the N3 coefficient. parameters for sensitivity analysis are number of workers in the building, pulse value from water meter and length of time step for expressing unevenness of water consumption during the day.

Rockfalls present a significant hazard to human activities;therefore, their identification and knowledge about potential spatial impacts are important in planning protection measures to reduce rockfall risk. Remote sensing with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has allowed for the accurate observation of slopes that are susceptible to rockfall activity via various methods and sensors with which it is possible to digitally collect information about the rockfall activity and spatial distributions. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of rock deposits (width, length, and height) and their volumes are addressed, and the results are used in a rockfall trajectory simulation. Due to the availability of different sensors on the UAV, the aim was also to observe the possible differences in the dimension estimations between photogrammetric and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) point clouds, besides the most traditional method where rock deposit dimensions are measured on the field using a measuring tape. The motivation for reconstructing rock dimensions and volumes was solely for obtaining input parameters into a rockfall model. In order to study the differences between rock-measuring methods, rock dimensions were used as input parameters in a rockfall model, and additionally, modeling results such as propagation probability, maximum kinetic energies, and maximum passing heights were compared. The results show that there are no statistically significant differences between the measurement method with respect to rock dimensions and volumes and when modeling the propagation probability and maximum passing heights. On the other hand, large differences are present with maximum kinetic energies where LiDAR point cloud measurements achieved statistically significantly different results from the other two measurements. The study of cellular structures and their properties represents big potential for their future applications in real practice. The article aims to study the effect of input parameters on the quality and manufacturability of cellular samples 3D-printed from Nylon 12 CF in synergy with testing their bending behavior. Three types of structures (Schwarz Diamond, Shoen Gyroid, and Schwarz Primitive) were selected for investigation that were made via the fused deposition modeling technique. As part of the research focused on the settings of input parameters in terms of the quality and manufacturability of the samples, input parameters such as volume fraction, temperature of the working space, filament feeding method and positioning of the sample on the printing pad were specified for the combination of the used material and 3D printer. During the experimental investigation of the bending properties of the samples, a three-point bending test was performed. The dependences of force on deflection were mathematically described and the amount of absorbed energy and ductility were evaluated. The results show that among the investigated structures, the Schwarz Diamond structure appears to be the most suitable for bending stress applications.

Deriving the functional relation of input parameters in single-point incremental forming through dimensional analysis

The system is designed with the basics of fundamental units termed dimensional analysis (DA). The fundamental units are modeled to figure out some quantitative measures without the knowledge of the system behavior. Subsequently, the dimension analysis-based modeling helps to develop the functional relation of input parameters for the set objectives. The generalized model is validated with the output of experiments with an agreement to adopt the model within a certain range of error. Single-point incremental forming (SPIF) is an innovative sheet metal forming technique in which the metal sheets are shaped as desired without using dedicated dies. The SPIF investigations and declared results are desperately waiting for its industrial acceptability, but the optimization of the process is absent. The current study is to develop the functional relation of input parameters of SPIF through dimensional analysis. The investigation included statistical, ANN, and DA results for R in SPIF. Statistically, the step-down size (delta z;p = 0.005), area of tool end (A;p = 0.048), and wall angle (theta;p = 0.014) are found significant. The modified R-values are lower than the true and ANN modeled R, and its mean error is noted as 6.136. The functional relation confirmed that the step-down size and area of tool end are prominent factors for surface roughness and its influences on output are 150% and 100%, respectively.

This work develops a combined control for a stand-alone permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) working with variable source and output demand. The power circuit consists of one PMSG, driven by uncontrolled prime mover supplying load through two voltage source converter (VSC) connected through a dc link capacitor. The main objective of the control is to supply load at constant voltage and frequency, even with variation in source speed and power, and also to accommodate the change in load transients. The generator side converter control is developed in rotor flux oriented synchronously rotating reference frame, to keep the dc link voltage, of the back to back VSC, constant. The load side converter control is also developed in the synchronously rotating reference frame to supply load at constant voltage and frequency. The developed combined control strategy is implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and found to be successful under all considered operating conditions. The theoretical findings are experimentally verified with a real-time prototype.

Harvesting Solar Energy: Prediction of Daily Global Horizontal Irradiance Using Artificial Neural Networks and Assessment of Electrical Energy of Photovoltaic at North Eastern Ethiopia

The difficulty and high price of measuring devices make the utilization of solar energy impractical, particularly in developing countries like Ethiopia. Because of its variability and nonlinear characteristics, it needs accurate prediction techniques in a specific location. Thus, the objectives of this article were: (i) assessing daily global horizontal irradiance using network types-activation functions of artificial neural network (ANN);and (ii) evaluating the daily energy delivered to and available on photovoltaic (PV) cells of GaAs at Kemissie, Woldiya, and Hayk, in the northeastern part of Ethiopia. Nine parameters were used in the input layer, and daily GHI was the output result. Feed forward back propagation (FFBP) and cascade forward back propagation (CFBP) with tansig, logsig, and purelin of ANNs were used. The best pairs were FFBP-logsig, CFBP-logsig, and CFBP-tangsig, with 0.8882 <= r <= 0.9833, respectively. The average values were (4.374 kWh/m2/day <= GHI <= 6.805 kWh/m2/day) at Kemissie, (4.246 kWh/m2/day <= GHI <= 7.116 kWh/m2/day) at Hayk, and (4.479 kWh/m2/day <= GHI <= 7.011 kWh/m2/day) at Woldiya. The energy delivered to and obtainable from PV cells varied between 0.1274 and 0.2135 kWh and 0.1101 and 0.1844 kWh, respectively, for all sites. This bears out the suitability of the site for the installation of a solar energy system.

Application of explainable machine learning for estimating direct and diffuse components of solar irradiance

The inclusion of diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) and direct normal irradiance (DNI) is crucial in the context of solar energy applications. However, most solar irradiance instruments primarily prioritize the measurement of global horizontal irradiance (GHI) due to the high cost associated with devices used to measure DNI and DHI. Hence, numerous prior works have investigated various solar decomposition models aimed at computing direct and diffuse irradiance from GHI. The present study introduces a novel separation approach for direct and diffuse irradiance, employing machine learning algorithms and utilizing data with a temporal resolution of 1 min. Three machine learning models utilizing the gradient boost technique are suggested and trained using data collected from 10 stations across the world with different climate conditions. The machine learning model called CatBoost outperforms all the solar decomposition models at every station. It achieves the lowest root mean squared error (RMSE) of 8.73% when calculating DNI. The concept of explainable machine learning is further explored through the utilization of shapley additive explanations (SHAP), which allows for the assessment of the significance and interaction of the input parameters. In summary, the results of this study reveal that humidity is an important parameter for the estimation of DNI and DHI.
