Enhancing value chains by applying industrial symbiosis concept to the Rubber City in Kedah, Malaysia

In the last decade, Malaysia has experienced exceptional growth, progressing from primarily agriculture based to a more developed manufacturing -based industrial economy. The natural rubber industry has been an important sector for Malaysia's economic development, contributing RM33.7 billion (USD101.1billion) or 4.69% of the country's Gross Domestic Profit (GDP) in 2013. This paper aims to apply the industrial symbiosis (IS) concept to the proposed Rubber City bilateral, industrial development in Kedah, Malaysia. The concept of IS can be considered a strategic tool to enhance environmental and socio-economic sustainability of rubber industry. This paper involves stakeholder analysis of IS to identify strategic priorities and opportunities for the Rubber City initiative. The IS framework focuses on three main natural rubber downstream products: natural rubber blocks, tyres, and gloves;and identifies synergies in resource cycles and waste management using Materials Flow Analysis (MFA) and the input output (10) data based on previous Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data for each of the three natural rubber products. Based on this case study, we identified ten principal synergies which include five potential IS industries integrated within the RC conceptual framework. Stakeholder surveys of natural rubber processors and other actors (such as government agencies) were conducted in Malaysia to identify barriers and enabling factors for IS implementation in the Rubber City. The outcomes of this study will be used as basis for integrated strategic development plan and implementation approach towards a sustainable Rubber City development in Malaysia. International R&D spillovers to the electric power industries

This article analyzes how productivity in the electric power industries (electricity, gas, steam and air condition supply) is affected through investments in R&D for OECD countries between 1995 and 2014. The accumulated R&D expenditures represent the current stock of knowledge or technology. Using a detailed input-output matrix for country-industry combinations allows us to distinguish between four types of spillovers: domestic own sector, foreign own sector as well as domestic and foreign other sector spillovers. The foreign spillovers we capture thus occur through the use of (imported) inputs from the electric power industries or from other sectors. Our estimates show that the productivity of the electric power industries is much more influenced by the transfer of embodied technology from other industries than by investments of these industries themselves. Countries with the highest stock of R&D are mainly responsible for these international technology spillovers. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article proposes a new methodology for the set of input-output of an open loop system data, the same that are used within a process of parametric identification using in and out of line recursive methods and its implementation in a FPGA Espartan 3E. This method is applicable to systems with relatively long stabilization time and which are operating at a high frequency, making it difficult to inject an excitation signal into the normal system operation.

Towards an improved gain scheduling predictive control strategy for a solar thermal power plant

This study improves a recently proposed gain scheduling predictive control strategy for the ACUREX solar collector field at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria, Spain. Measured disturbances are an integral part of the plant and while simple classical, series and parallel, feedforward approaches have been proposed and used extensively in the literature, the proposed approach incorporates a feedforward systematically into the predictive control strategy by including the effects of the measured disturbances into the predictions of future outputs. Models of the measured disturbances are estimated around a family of operating points directly from input-output data and using a subspace identification method while taking into account the frequency response of the plant. input-output data are obtained from a validated non-linear simulation model of the plant. The non-linear simulation model is validated against measured data obtained from the ACUREX plant and the effectiveness of the proposed control approach is evaluated in the same non-linear simulation environment. The study also considers related issues such as the significance of sufficient modelling of the measured disturbances and the impact of incorporating the expected future behaviour of a measured disturbance along a given prediction horizon, a theme which has received little attention in the literature.

The social footprint-a practical approach to comprehensive and consistent social LCA

The practicality of social footprinting is currently hampered by an excessive data requirement, a lack of focus on materiality of the impacts, and a lack of understanding of the main impact pathways (cause-effect relationships) for social and economic impacts. We propose a "streamlined" method to overcome these barriers without loss of comprehensiveness. The method combines a top-down approach using input-output data to focus the data collection effort on processes with high value added or a high number of work hours with a streamlined impact assessment that limits the inventory data requirement and the need for detailed impact pathway descriptions, by focusing on the macro-scale impacts of income redistribution and productivity impacts of missing governance, both of which can be classified as nonproduction-specific impacts, i.e., unrelated to enterprise-specific actions and choice of technology, and therefore quantifiable from national statistics without need to access detailed technology- or enterprise-specific data. The method is open for further refinement and detail in areas of specific interest for a particular product or project. We show that nonproduction-specific impacts constitute the vast majority of social and economic impacts and how important income inequality is for the impact assessment. We apply a novel way of combining impacts on productivity and impacts on human well-being and show that inequality implies that an intervention that changes the amount of QALY (quality-adjusted life years) for a population group will always give a larger change in well-being than an intervention of the same monetary value that only affects the level of consumption of the same population group. Throughout the article, we apply and illustrate the method with an example from the clothing industry. Non-iterative direct data-driven controller tuning for multivariable systems: theory and application

In this study, a data-driven technique is proposed to deal with multivariable fixed-order controller design. The method is based on the virtual reference feedback tuning (VRFT) philosophy and thus does not require any model of the plant. Unlike standard VRFT for SISO systems, extended instrumental variables and variance weighting are used to counteract the effect of noise and achieve consistent controller estimate with a single set of input-output data. The proposed strategy is numerically compared to other existing direct and indirect techniques on a benchmark simulation example. The effectiveness of the method is finally tested on the airpath control of a real diesel engine.

A method for the identification of an accurate system model and subsequent digital control of an electric arc furnace electrode position controller is presented. The identification procedure involves model reduction to derive a low-order model from a theoretically realised higher-order system model, together with parameter tuning in the low-order model using an extended Kalman filter applied to input-output data collected from a real controller perturbed by a pseudorandom binary sequence. Such tuning is necessary to correct for inaccuracies in the initial theoretical system modelling. The technique produces an accurate system model suitable for designing digital control algorithms but avoids the computational difficulties associated with other identification techniques which treat the system as a black box. The paper concludes with consideration of the forms of digital control suitable for the system.

Identification of discrete-time MIMO systems using a class of observable canonical-form

The paper present an identification algorithm for a discrete-time (D-T) multiinput multioutput (MIMO) deterministic system. The proposed identification algorithm which is based on calculating a matrix fraction description (MFD) from available input-output data can be considered as a version of the recently developed subspace model identification (SMI) schemes. The system to be identified is represented using a special class of observable canonical-forms which ha e the property that all its observability indices are equal. The used observable canonicalform is convenient in the sense that it makes the identification problem of the MIMO systems x cry similar to that of the single-input single-output (SISO) systems. The theoretical developments are verified through the use of the proposed algorithm to identify a minimal order state space model of a boiler used in the petroleum industry in Kuwait.

Inclusive modelling and parameter estimation of a steam power plant using an LMI-based unknown input reconstruction algorithm

A comprehensive dynamic model of a steam power plant, including turbine, governor, and boiler models, is proposed in this paper. The whole turbine-boiler control strategies inter alia turbine following, boiler following, coordinated control, and sliding pressure control modes are also taken into account in the modelling procedure, making the integrated model adaptable for all the steam units. A novel multi-stage algorithm is asserted in the other part of the paper to estimate the obtained model parameters using input-output data from operational tests. Regarding the fact that the mechanical power as the turbine output and one of the synchronous generator (SG) inputs cannot be measured directly, an efficacious unknown input reconstruction (UIR) method is employed in this paper to determine the mechanical power from SG measured signals. The UIR observer in this method is obtained by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI). Other parameters are identified by applying a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to the measurement data. Finally, the acquired model and parameters are validated by employing the recorded data from several tests, and the results are discussed.

Model-free adaptive control method for a class of unknown MIMO systems with measurement noise and application to quadrotor aircraft

In this work, a novel robust model-free adaptive control (Ro-MFAC) algorithm for a class of unknown multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with measurement noise is presented. The proposed algorithm, designing by a dynamic linearisation data model with the concept of the pseudo-Jacobian matrix and an adaptive decreasing factor, is a pure a data-driven control method, and only the input-output data are involved for the control system design. The introduction of the adaptive decreasing factor is to attenuate the noise effect on the performance for improving the robustness of the algorithm. The stability of the Ro-MFAC proposed algorithm is proven by rigorous mathematical theory, and the effectiveness of the Ro-MFAC is verified by a series of numerical simulations. Furthermore, the Ro-MFAC is applied to an attitude adjustment problem of a practical quadrotor aircraft for demonstrating the applicability of the proposed approach.
