Stability and performance analysis of linear positive systems with delays using input-output methods

It is known that input-output approaches based on scaled small-gain theorems with constant D-scalings and integral linear constraints are non-conservative for the analysis of some classes of linear positive systems interconnected with uncertain linear operators. This dramatically contrasts with the case of general linear systems with delays where input-output approaches provide, in general, sufficient conditions only. Using these results, we provide simple alternative proofs for many of the existing results on the stability of linear positive systems with discrete/distributed/neutral time-invariant/-varying delays and linear difference equations. In particular, we give a simple proof for the characterisation of diagonal Riccati stability for systems with discrete-delays and generalise this equation to other types of delay systems. The fact that all those results can be reproved in a very simple way demonstrates the importance and the efficiency of the input-output framework for the analysis of linear positive systems. The approach is also used to derive performance results evaluated in terms of the L-1-, L-2- and L-infinity-gains. It is also flexible enough to be used for design purposes.

The robustness of instability is investigated for feedback interconnections of rational transfer functions, motivated by the relevance of such in the study of oscillatory dynamics. An analysis is presented in terms of normalized coprime factorizations and the L-2-gap metric. The main result is a necessary and sufficient condition for feedback instability to persist across a particular uncertainty set for one open-loop component of the interconnection, with the other component fixed. This uncertainty set is a subset of an L-2-gap ball. It includes the associated nu-gap metric ball, and other winding-number based partitions that enable necessity to be established for sufficiently large ball radius.

In the context of global efforts to mitigate climate change, the precise mapping and management of industrial carbon emissions are paramount, particularly in China, the world's largest emitter. This study shifts the focus from traditional producer-centric carbon accounting to a demand-driven model, aiming to refine the representation of carbon responsibilities within China's expansive industrial sectors. Utilizing a complex network model, the analysis spans embodied carbon emissions across 28 sectors from 2002 to 2020, enabling a detailed understanding of sectoral interactions and dependencies. Findings reveal a growing disparity between economic activities and carbon emissions, with sectors such as electricity and construction emerging as major nodes of supply and receipt. The analysis also highlights a "Matthew effect," with dominant sectors increasingly centralizing influence over network interactions. The study concludes with the urgent need for sector-specific emission reduction strategies, advocating collaborative policies for high-emission sectors and technological upgrades in critical areas. These strategies are vital for optimizing carbon management and supporting China's goals of achieving carbon peak and neutrality, thereby contributing significantly to global climate change mitigation efforts.

An input-output approach to stability analysis is explored for networked systems with uncertain link dynamics. The main result consists of a collection of integral quadratic constraints, which together imply robust stability of the uncertain networked system, under the assumption that stability is achieved with ideal links. The conditions are decentralized inasmuch as each involves only agent and uncertainty model parameters that are local to a corresponding link. This makes the main result, which imposes no restriction on network structure, suitable for the study of large-scale systems.

Given one open-loop measured trajectory of a single-input single-output discrete-time linear time-invariant system, we present a framework for data-driven controller design for closed-loop finitehorizon dissipativity. First, we parametrize all closed-loop trajectories using the given data of the plant and a model of the controller. We then provide an approach to validate the controller by verifying closed-loop dissipativity in the standard feedback loop based on this parametrization. We use these conditions to design controllers leading to closed-loop dissipativity based on a quadratic matrix inequality feasibility problem. Finally, the results are illustrated with a simulation example.

Determining optimal input-output properties: A data-driven approach

Due to their relevance in systems analysis and (robust) controller design, we consider the problem of determining control-theoretic system properties of an a priori unknown system from data only. More specifically, we introduce a necessary and sufficient condition for a discrete-time linear time invariant system to satisfy a given integral quadratic constraint (IQC) over a finite time horizon using only one input-output trajectory of finite length. Furthermore, for certain classes of IQCs, we provide convex optimization problems in form of semidefinite programs (SDPs) to retrieve the optimal, i.e. the tightest, system property description that is satisfied by the unknown system. Finally, we provide bounds on the difference between finite and infinite horizon IQCs and illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in a variety of simulation studies including noisy measurements and a high dimensional system. For the analysis, simulation, and controller design of large-scale systems, a surrogate model with small complexity is mostly required. A standard approach to determine such a model is given by modelling the system and applying model-order-reduction techniques. Contrary, we propose a data-driven approach, where the surrogate model of the input-output behaviour of an LTI system is determined from data without modelling the system beforehand. Moreover, we provide a guaranteed bound on the maximal error between the system and the surrogate model in case of noise-free measurements. We analyse the stability and convergence of the presented schemes and apply them on a benchmark system from the model-order-reduction literature. Copyright (C) 2020 The Authors.
