Reliability analysis of semi-Markov systems with restriction on transition times

In this paper, a competing risk model with a restriction on transition times for semi-Markov multi-state repairable systems is proposed. The states of semi-Markov systems can be divided into three categories: a normal working subset, a defective working subset and a breakdown subset which contains an absorbing state where the system cannot escape once entering it. If the number of transitions between the normal and defective working subsets exceeds a given value, the system will be abandoned due to the high maintenance costs. The theory of aggregated stochastic process is employed to obtain the closed-form formulas of the probabilities of competing risks, distributions of survival times and point-wise availabilities. An integer nonlinear programming is presented which enables the system to satisfy the prescribed performance requirements and control its economic cost. A corresponding algorithm for solving the integer nonlinear programming is provided to find the optimal number of transition times. Two numerical examples including Markov process and semi-Markov process are conducted to illustrate the obtained results and proposed methods finally.

Optimal attribute sampling plans in closed-forms

Lot sampling inspection based on the number of defective units observed in selected random samples is widely used in reliability and quality control. An integer nonlinear programming problem is formulated to determine the most powerful binomial sampling plan for the disposition of large lots with limited producer and consumer risks. An appealing approximation of the optimal test plan is then explicitly deduced. The minimum number of units to be tested per lot in order to achieve the desired protections for manufacturers and customers, as well as the best decision rule for lot sentencing, is derived in closed-form. The procedure is simple, quick and accurate in most practical cases, and clearly improves the classical normal approximation. The suggested perspective allows the practitioners to greatly simplify the determination of the best attribute inspection scheme. In addition, it can be used to find the optimal reliability demonstration test plan based on the number of observed failures in a given time period. The developed methodology is applied to some examples in industrial manufacturing for illustrative and comparative purposes. A useful approximation of the optimal attribute sampling plan with given expected risks is also provided.

INLP-BPN approach for recommending hotels to a mobile traveler

Existing systems for recommending hotels to mobile travelers are subject to several problems. For example, a traveler might choose a dominated hotel that is inferior to another hotel in all aspects. This problem cannot be solved by simply changing the weights assigned to the attributes of a hotel. In addition, a nonlinear recommendation mechanism, instead of a linear one, may be more effective for tailoring the recommendation result to a traveler's choice. To address these concerns, this study applied two treatments. First, an artificial attribute is added to each hotel to model a traveler's unknown preference for that hotel. The value of a traveler's unknown preference is determined by solving an integer nonlinear programming problem. Subsequently, a backward propagation network is constructed to map the recommendation results to travelers' choices, to improve the successful recommendation rate. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was evaluated in a field study conducted in a small region of Seatwen District, Taichung City, Taiwan, and the experimental results supported its superiority over several existing methods in improving the successful recommendation rate.

Optimization-based prediction of fold bifurcations in nonlinear ODE models

A complex nonlinear system might exhibit a rich variety of dynamics. Detecting and classifying these dynamics is crucial to understand and ultimately control the system. Starting from an ODE model, this analysis can be done using standard bifurcation/continuation methods. However, when we start from measured data to infer the equations governing the dynamics (parameters and topology) we need tools to detect bifurcations in presence of parameter and even structural uncertainty. This is particularly the case in the field of systems biology, where we often deal with limited mechanistic knowledge (including potential conflicting hypotheses) and scarce experimental data. Here we present a method to efficiently predict the appearance of fold bifurcations in general systems of ordinary differential equations. The approach formulates the search of the bifurcation condition through a Mixed integer nonlinear programming optimization strategy. In this way, we can simultaneously explore parameter and topology spaces searching for the desired bifurcation behaviour. We illustrate the capabilities and efficiency of our method through an example of biological relevance, the transcriptional network controlling adipogenesis, finding the conditions for an irreversible switch that causes the conversion of preadipocytes into adipocytes responsible of lipid accumulation. © 2018

Industrial parks have the trend to be designed to operate as microgrids with renewable distributed generations and battery storage. In this paper, an energy management system is proposed for AC/DC microgrids. This paper introduces a mixed-integer nonlinear programming method to realize the multiple objectives of emergency energy management. Combined with the comprehensive consideration of the amount of load supply, the cost of power generation and the utilization of battery storage, as well as the number of the switch operation, this paper establishes a composite objective function by synthetically evaluating several criteria. Then, examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by considering the islanded mode with a generator fault. © 2018

This paper considers a decentralized detection system for a binary hypothesis testing problem. The sensor signals are marginally Gaussian distributed with theta-parameter Clayton copula joint distribution. Boolean functions of two variables and likelihood ratio test at the fusion center are considered to generate binary global decisions. The exhaustive search and the genetic algorithms are proposed to provide the local sensor decision rules in each scenario such that the probability of error at the fusion center is minimized. The main purpose of this paper is to study the probability of error behavior of the proposed detection systems in a correlated environment characterized by a joint Clayton copula distribution. The results show that in a correlated environment a sound detection system should be characterized by the likelihood ratio test at the fusion center and multiple-threshold decisions at the sensors.

Most common objectives in single-machine scheduling problems are minimize makespan, total completion time and total weighted completion time, respectively. In this paper, we consider single machine scheduling problems under position-dependent fuzzy learning effect with fuzzy processing times. Furthermore, we show that these three problems are polynomially solvable under position dependent fuzzy learning effect with fuzzy processing times. In order to model the uncertainty of fuzzy model parameters such as processing time and learning effect, we use an approach called as likelihood profile that dependent on the possibility and necessity measures of fuzzy parameters. For three objective functions, we build Fuzzy Mixed integer nonlinear programming (FMINP) models those are dependent chance constrained programming technique for the same predetermined confidence levels. A class of valid inequalities for multilinear 0-1 optimization problems

This paper investigates the polytope associated with the classical standard linearization technique for the unconstrained optimization of multilinear polynomials in 0-1 variables. A new class of valid inequalities, called 2-links, is introduced to strengthen the LP relaxation of the standard linearization. The addition of the 2-links to the standard linearization inequalities provides a complete description of the convex hull of integer solutions for the case of functions consisting of at most two nonlinear monomials. For the general case, various computational experiments show that the 2-links improve both the standard linearization bound and the computational performance of exact branch & cut methods. The improvements are especially significant for a class of instances inspired from the image restoration problem in computer vision. The magnitude of this effect is rather surprising in that the 2-links are in relatively small number (quadratic in the number of terms of the objective function). (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Economic lot sampling inspection from defect counts with minimum conditional value-at-risk

Expected cost functions are often minimized to determine optimal inspection schemes for lot acceptance purposes. However, minimum mean cost sampling plans usually have high probabilities of suffering great losses. A risk management perspective based on minimizing the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is proposed in order to avoid unacceptably large costs. In essence, the CVaR associated with an inspection scheme is the expected cost of a given proportion of the most costly cases. Optimal defects-per-unit acceptance sampling plans with controlled producer and consumer risks for screening lots of incoming materials and outgoing products are determined by minimizing the CVaR for a given risk aversion degree. The decision criterion is based on the uniformly most powerful test. The Poisson distribution is used to model the number of nonconformities per sampled unit and the natural prior uncertainty on the defect rate A is described by a truncated gamma distribution. A computational algorithm is suggested to solve the underlying integer nonlinear programming problem. Practitioners can assume a restricted range for the defect rate and prior knowledge on A may be updated using past performance of the inspection plan. The developed methodology is applied to the manufacturing of paper for illustrative purposes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Production and Delivery Batch Scheduling with Multiple Due Dates to Minimize Total Cost

This paper addresses an integrated production and delivery batch scheduling problem for a make-to-order environment over daily time period, where the holding costs of in-process and completed parts at a supplier location and of completed parts at a manufacturer location are distinguished. All orders of parts with different due dates from the manufacturer arrive at the same time. The parts are produced in production batches and subsequently the completed parts are delivered in delivery batches using a capacitated vehicle in order to be received at the respective due dates. This study was aimed at finding an integrated schedule of production and delivery batches so as to meet the due date at minimum total cost consisting of the corresponding holding cost and delivery cost. The holding cost is a derivation of the so-called actual flow time (AFT), while the delivery cost is assumed to be proportional to the number of deliveries. The problems can be formulated as an integer non-linear programming model, and the global optimal solution can be obtained using optimization software. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to cope with the computational time problem using software. The numerical experiences show that the proposed algorithm yields near global optimal solutions.
