Acquired and acquiring middle managers are in a central role in mergers and acquisitions (M&As), as they are responsible for the execution of the acquisition's strategy. However, the context of cross-border acquisitions considerably alters the strategy roles of the acquired middle managers. This paper explores the post-acquisition phase as a collection of integration projects. In so doing, the paper contributes to an emerging stream bridging the M&As and project management literatures. Using a mixed methods research design, our findings are based on an international sample of 52 interviews and 65 survey responses. We offer two contributions to extant theorizing. The first contribution is in revealing the role of integration projects as relational spaces wherein inter-firm interaction and post-acquisition strategy execution is undertaken. The second contribution demonstrates that the recovery of acquired middle managers strategic roles is not only linked to the existence of these relational spaces, but further depends on the project type. Our findings are a call for more research connecting the M&As and project management literatures.

Application integration has become the 'philosopher's stone' for many industrial companies. Many integration projects have succeeded in solving the problem they set themselves, but left the problem of integration unsolved. The integration of applications for a complex design environment is particularly rich in such projects. In the author's experience, a broader view of integration is needed, and several complementary models of integration are described, together with a list of 12 different design issues that integration projects need to resolve. It is not claimed that a project covering all these features will succeed, but rather an absence of a feature is an indication that the project will fail.

The evolution of learning in higher education is nowadays evident. Several discussions and studies have been performed about new methodologies that can disrupt the way the classes are taught in universities. In this context, Project-Based Learning (PBL) is the most emphasized. In the Mechanical Engineering course at the University of Minho (UM), the integration Project (IP) courses apply a PBL methodology, being these classes the differentiating element of the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering (IMME) compared with other Portuguese universities. However, even if the innovative aspect of this approach is recognized nationally, the opinions between students and Professors, about the structure and organization of this class, are still divided. In that sense, this work presents a new proposal for the IP courses in which the opinion of students and successful models implemented in international universities are considered. This study analyses the best PBL methodologies implemented in Engineering courses and presents a PBL model actually implemented at the IMME. This information is combined with the student's views obtained from a survey conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM), regarding the actual PBL model. Through this study, a new proposal for the IP courses is presented. This proposal intends to provide an effective answer to the necessity of the students, using successful tools and methodologies to improve the teaching and learning process in the IMME course. Through this proposal, it is expected to increase the learning process and motivation of the students making them better prepared for a productive profession.

Due to civil wars, violence and persecutions, between 2015 and 2016, more than 1.4 million people, from the Middle East and Africa, fled their counties and migrated to Europe. The vast majority of migrants, who have already experienced enormous level of stressors, are faced with dangerous, often lethal, migratory journeys. Thosewho survive are exposed to adaptation stressors such as different languages, isolation, lack of work opportunities, diminished social status and a sense of failure in the new countries of residence. These are stressors that go far beyond the usual adaptation stresses to new cultures and migrants experience permanent crises with an imminent risk of developing the "Ulysses syndrome". As a consequence, many individuals often develop symptoms such as irritability, nervousness, migraine, tension headache, insomnia, tiredness, fear, loss of appetite and generalized ill-defined discomfort. If left untreated these symptoms, originally described by Hofer in the 17th century, may degenerate into a severe psychosomatic disorder leading to reactive depression. Here we expand the concept of Ulysses' syndrome and illustrate new initiatives aimed at reducing the level of stressors in migrants and at promoting their successful integration in their new countries.
