Nowadays,recommender systems are widely implemented in E-commerce websites to assist customers in finding the items they need. A recommender system should also be able to provide users with useful information about the items that might interest them. The ability of promptly responding to changes in user's preference is a valuable asset for such systems. This paper presents an innovative recommender system for music data that combines two methodologies,the content-based filtering technique and the interactive genetic algorithm. The proposed system aims to effectively adapt and respond to immediate changes in users' preferences. The experiments conducted in an objective manner exhibit that our system is able to recommend items suitable with the subj ective favorite of each individual user.

We describe an intuitive computer graphics creation environment usable on tiny mobile devices. We adopted a 3D modeling method based on interactive genetic algorithm (iGA). It allows users to intuitively produce high quality graphics contents on site by evolving a set of 3D models. The proposed system enables the users to easily design 3D graphics contents by using a mobile device anywhere at any time without sacrificing visual quality. The computing power of the mobile devices is not enough for visualizing realistic 3D objects. We therefore employed client/server architecture for balancing computing loads between a server and a mobile client. The client plays a role for handling user interactions and 3D contents visualization whereas the server is responsible for all heavy computations such as 3D graphics modeling, rendering, and evolutionary processing by iGA. Providing good user interface is a crucial factor for mobile software design. We prototyped multiple GUI layouts and conducted a comparative experiment to figure out a good design approach for mobile 3D graphics system.

So as to create innovative car silhouettes, we propose in this paper a model based on an interactive genetic algorithm using an encoding of a design solution by a Fourier analysis approach. This model permits the designer to browse through generations of car profiles from an initial population of existing silhouettes. By qualitatively assessing each individual, the user converges towards solutions complying with his/her requirements and thus potentially creates novelty. We describe here tests for assessing the efficiency of this innovative design platform. These tests are based on a similarity matrix, a similarity measure being the perceived distance between two cars silhouettes. The results show a highly satisfactory behavior of the model and open perspectives thanks to its flexible and extensible aspects.

An interactive co-evolutionary CAD system for garment pattern design

Traditional CAD (Computer-Aided Design) methods in garment pattern design (GPD) fail to utilize the knowledge of experts for inexperienced designers. Moreover. the interactive and co-evolutionary features are not supported. We propose an interactive co-evolutionary CAD system for GPD (ICE-GCAD), The functionality model, modular architecture and data flow of the system are proposed. Then, the interactive co-evolutionary system whose core module is an immune-inspired co-evolutionary algorithm is studied. Finally, the flow of co-design in the system is proposed. As a case demonstration, we Study a design sample of a leisure shirt. The experimental studies show that our approach has promising performance and appealing effects. We believe ICE-GCAD is applicable to support the collaboration among garment designers and experts. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Retrieval of movie scenes by semantic matrix and automatic feature weight update

A new semantic-based video scene retrieval method is proposed in this paper. Twelve low-level features extracted from a video clip are represented in a genetic chromosome and target videos that user has in mind are retrieved by the interactive genetic algorithm through the feedback iteration. In this procedure, high-level semantic relevance between retrieved videos is accumulated with so-called semantic relevance matrix and semantic frequency matrix for each iteration, and they are combined with an automatic feature weight update scheme to retrieve more target videos at the next iteration. Experiments over 300 movie scene clips extracted from latest well-known movies, showed an user satisfaction of 0.71 at the fourth iteration for eight queries such as "gloominess", "happiness", "quietness", "action", "conversation", "explosion", "war", and "car chase". Objective: So far there is no ideal speckle reduction filtering technique that is capable of enhancing and reducing the level of noise in medical ultrasound (US) images, white efficiently responding to medical experts' validation criteria which quite often include a subjective component. This paper presents an interactive tool. called evolutionary speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion filter (EVOSRAD) that performs adaptive speckle filtering on ultrasound B-mode still images. The medical expert runs the algorithm interactively, having a permanent control over the output, and guiding the filtering process towards obtaining enhanced images that agree to his/her subjective quality criteria. Methods and material: We employ an interactive evolutionary algorithm (IGA) to adapt on-tine the parameters of a speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion (SRAD) filter. For a given input US image, the algorithm evolves the parameters of the SRAD filter according to subjective criteria of the medical expert who runs the interactive algorithm. The method and its validation are applied to a test bed comprising both real and simulated obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) ultrasound images. Results: The potential of the method is analyzed in comparison to other speckle reduction fitters: the original SRAD filter, the anisotropic diffusion, offset and median fitters. Results obtained show the good potential of the method on several classes of OB/GYN ultrasound images, as well as on a synthetic image simulating a real fetal US image. Quality criteria for the evaluation and validation of the method include subjective scoring given by the medical expert who runs the interactive method, as well as objective global and local quality criteria. Conclusions: The method presented allows the medical expert to design its own filters according to the degree of medical expertise as well as to particular and often subjective assessment criteria. A comparison of three fitness prediction strategies for interactive genetic algorithms

The human fatigue problem is one of the most significant problems encountered by interactive genetic algorithms (IGA). Different strategies have been proposed to address this problem, such as easing evaluation methods, accelerating IGA convergence via speedup algorithms, and fitness prediction. This paper studies the performance of fitness prediction strategies. Three prediction schemes, the neural network (NN), the Bayesian learning algorithm (BLA), and a novel prediction method based on algorithmic probability (ALP), are examined. Numerical simulations are performed in order to compare the performances of these three schemes.

Large Population Size IGAs with Individuals' Fitness Not Assigned by User

User fatigue problem in traditional interactive genetic algorithms restricts its population size. It is necessary to maintain a large population size to optimize complicated problems. We present a large population size interactive genetic algorithm with individuals' fitness not assigned by user in this paper. The algorithm divides the population into several clusters, and the maximum number of clusters is changeable with the evolution and distribution of the population. The user only evaluates a center individual in each cluster and others' fitness is estimated based on these ones. In addition, to assign a center individual's fitness, we record the time when the user evaluates it satisfactory or unsatisfactory according to his/her sensitiveness, and its fitness is automatically calculated based on the time. Finally, we apply the proposed algorithm to the one-max problem, and compare it with traditional interactive genetic algorithms. The experimental results validate its efficiency.
