Rolling of flat steel products is an industrial process in the field of metalworking where two or more pairs of rolls reduce the thickness of a steel strip to produce a uniform thickness material. Despite it has been studied for many years, there are still unpredictable problems that can affect the final quality of the product. One of them is the so-called chatter, that is a powerful self-excited vibration that appears suddenly and limits the productivity of the process. In this paper, a visual analytics approach is considered for exploratory analysis in order to discover and understand the factors and conditions under which chatter appears. An interactive web-based interface is presented here which allows the user to explore a map of dynamical conditions and visualize relevant details of each chatter onset. A validation case is performed using real data where normal/fault conditions have been identified automatically. By means of interactive exploration, the tool allows to refine an automatic chatter detection method. Moreover, it is shown to reveal correlations between variables, providing in some expected cases data based confirmation, but also revealing less obvious relationships. Finally, it provides context, allowing to carry out comparative analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, for different subsets of coils (e.g. different years) as well as for different working conditions. A key feature of interactive data visualization is the ability for users to choose the visualization formats and chart types. Some users may rely on their experience and gut feelings in selecting a visualization format while other users may evaluate the task characteristics and select a visualization format that fits better with task requirements. In this study, we examine the conditions under which users employ the experience or analytical strategies in selecting visualization format and the effects of the two strategies on decision accuracy and confidence. A laboratory study has been conducted to test the hypotheses. Our results show that more users employ the analytical strategy when confronted with incongruent cognitive style and task difficulty conditions and they were more confident about their decisions following the analytical strategy. The study helps us understand how interactive data visualizations can be utilized and identify areas for data visualization education and training.

Overcoming Resistance to Big data and Operational Changes Through interactive data visualization

Research has shown that the use of big data can modify operational processes in organizations. However, little research has been conducted on overcoming resistance to the process changes needed for adoption of big data technologies. In this article, we address this gap in the literature by investigating the impact of interactive data visualization on decision-making around operational process changes with big data. Our goal is to demonstrate how the choice of visualization of workflow and operational processes impacts decisions to embrace real-time, big data technology. To do so, we conduct a case study of patient/provider interactions in a large health care practice and compare the initial state with a revised workflow using a big data, real-time analytics platform. We then investigate the impact of the data visualization strategy on decision-making to implement operational changes caused by big data. The study demonstrates that interactive data visualization of operational processes can be an enabler in overcoming organizational resistance to big data technologies in a change-resistant organization. The concomitant benefit is that big data analytics is placed directly into the hands of primary decision makers.

As more and more interactive data visualization tools emerge, designers need a coincident evaluation method to give timely users' feedback. In this research, we propose a systematic approach to gauge the usability of such tools. Firstly, quantitative data including gaze and mouse movement are collected for statistical analysis. Secondly, user operation is encoded as a sequence for comparison. We describe the mechanism for data analysis on gaze and mouse tracking. Finally, we present understandability, discoverability, usage frequency, and efficiency as indicators to evaluate interactive data visualization tools.

With the rise of large-scale environmental models comes new challenges for how we best utilize this information in research, management and decision making. interactive data visualizations can make large and complex datasets easier to access and explore, which can lead to knowledge discovery, hypothesis formation and improved understanding. Here, we present a web-based interactive data visualization framework, the interactive Catchment Explorer (ICE), for exploring environmental datasets and model outputs. Using a client-based architecture, the ICE framework provides a highly interactive user experience for discovering spatial patterns, evaluating relationships between variables and identifying specific locations using multivariate criteria. Through a series of case studies, we demonstrate the application of the ICE framework to datasets and models associated with three separate research projects covering different regions in North America. From these case studies, we provide specific examples of the broader impacts that tools like these can have, including fostering discussion and collaboration among stakeholders and playing a central role in the iterative process of data collection, analysis and decision making. Overall, the ICE framework demonstrates the potential benefits and impacts of using web-based interactive data visualization tools to place environmental datasets and model outputs directly into the hands of stakeholders, managers, decision makers and other researchers.

interactive data visualization has become an important tool for business executives in monitoring key performance indicators, analyzing business process data, and managing individual and organizational performances. One of the key features in interactive data visualization is that users have direct control over how information is presented during the decision-making process. Few studies have examined how users choose visualization formats in such an environment. In this study, we investigate how cognitive style, spatial ability, and task difficulty affect the preference and choice of visualization formats and how the chosen visualization format in turn affects decision accuracy and confidence. Our results show that the choice of visualization format is affected by a user's cognitive style and task difficulty. While decision performances in accuracy and confidence are affected by task difficulty, spatial ability, and visualization format, they are largely not affected by the interactions between visualization format and cognitive style, spatial ability, and task difficulty.

Identifying the potential factors that contribute to an aircraft engine's durability is a big challenge. In this paper, we propose an interactive system to link the engine maintenance history data, flight route history data, and volcanic ash eruption data, and then visualize the relations among them. Several kinds of visualization forms are used to present the datasets. We implement the React-Redux framework to manage the visual components in the frontend, along with a backend to handle the database. This highly tailored system shows how datasets of different sources can be linked and visualized with interactivity. data analysts and developers can benefit from full-stack development process from data to intuition, meeting the requirements of customized visualization.

Visualizing data is an essential part of good statistical practice. Plots are useful for revealing structure in the data, checking model assumptions, detecting outliers and finding unanticipated patterns. Post-analysis visualization is commonly used to communicate the results of statistical analyses. The availability of good statistical visualization software is key in effectively performing data analysis and in exploring and developing new methods for data visualization. Compared to static visualization, interactive visualization adds natural and powerful ways to explore the data. With interactive visualization an analyst can dive into the data and quickly react to visual clues by, for example, re-focusing and creating interactive queries of the data. Further, linking visual attributes of the data points such as color and size allows the analyst to compare different visual representations of the data such as histograms and *** this thesis, we explore and develop new interactive data visualization and exploration tools for high-dimensional data. The original focus of our research was a software implementation of navigation graphs. Navigation graphs are navigational infrastructures for controlled exploration of high-dimensional data. As part of this thesis, we developed the first interactive implementation of these navigation graphs called RnavGraph. With RnavGraph we explored various features for enhancing the usability of navigation graphs. We concluded that a powerful interactive scatterplot display and methods to deal with large graphs were two areas that would add great value to the navigation graph ***''s scatterplot display proved to be particularly useful for data analysis and we continued our research with the design and implementation of a general-purpose interactive visualization toolkit called loon. A core issue during the planning of a maintenance intervention in a facility with ionizing radiation is the minimization of the integrated equivalent dose contracted by the maintenance workers during the intervention. In this work, we lay down the concepts for intervention planning in an irradiated environment and present a new software program for intervention planning, which provides interactive visualization of facilities and radiation levels, as well as tools for interactive trajectory planning.
