We present an interactive Tabu Search (ITS) algorithm to reduce the evaluation load of interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) users. Most previous IEC studies used an evaluation interface that required users to provide evaluation values for all candidate solutions. However, user's burden with such an evaluation interface is large. Therefore, we propose ITS where users choose the favorite candidate solution from the presented candidate solutions. Tabu Search (TS) is recognized as an optimization technique. ITS evaluation is simpler than interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) evaluation, in which users provide evaluation values for all candidate solutions. Therefore, ITS is effective for reducing user evaluation load. We evaluated the performance of our proposed ITS and a Normal IGA (NIGA), which is a conventional 10-stage evaluation, using a numerical simulation with an evaluation agent that imitates human preferences (Kansei). In addition, we implemented an ITS evaluation for a running-shoes-design system and examined its effectiveness through an experiment with real users. The simulation results showed that the evolution performance of ITS is better than that of NIGA. In addition, we conducted an evaluation experiment with 21 subjects in their 20s to assess the effectiveness of these methods. The results showed that the satisfaction levels for the candidates generated by ITS and NIGA were approximately equal. Moreover, it was easier for test subjects to evaluate candidate solutions with ITS than with NIGA.

In this paper, we survey the research on interactive evolutionary computation (IEC). The IEC is an EC that optimizes systems based on subjective human evaluation. The definition and features of the IEC are first described and then followed by an overview of the IEC research. The overview primarily consists of application research and interface research. In this survey, the IEC application fields include graphic arts and animation, three-dimensional CG lighting, music, editorial design, industrial design, facial image generation, speech processing and synthesis, hearing aid fitting, virtual reality, media database retrieval, data mining, image processing, control and robotics, food industry, geophysics, education, entertainment, social system, and so on. Also in this survey, the interface research to reduce human fatigue includes improving fitness input interfaces and displays based on fitness prediction, accelerating EC convergence especially in early EC generations, examining combinations of interactive and normal EC, and investigating active user intervention. Finally, we discuss the IEC from the point of the future research direction of computational intelligence. In order to show the status quo IEC research, this paper primarily features a survey of about 250 IEC research papers rather than a carefully selected representation of a few papers.

In practical system identification, process optimization and controller design, it is often desirable to simultaneously handle several objectives and constraints. In some cases, these objectives and constraints are non-commensurable and they are not explicitly/mathematically available. This paper proposes a new subjective optimization method based on interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) to handle these problems. IEC is an evolutionary algorithm whose fitness function is provided by human users. The whole approach has been implemented in MATLAB (EAsy-IEC Toolbox) and applied to two case-studies: tuning a Model Predictive Controller and temperature profile design of a batch beer fermenter. The results show that IEC is an efficient and comfortable method to incorporate the prior knowledge of the user into optimization problems. interactive evolutionary computation systems can be used to evolve advertisement texts. Google AdWords was used as the interface that users can use to see the advertisement texts, and have a chance of being persuaded by the text into clicking them. interactive evolutionary computation systems use humans to perform fitness evaluation in the evolutionary process, which can be applied on a genetic algorithm. This work presents a comparison between two variations of the genetic algorithm: one that uses a fuzzy inference system to dynamically adapt the mutation rate, and another that uses a fixed mutation rate. The results show that the dynamically adapted genetic algorithm in the interactive evolutionary computation system has the potential to have a better performance and lead to smaller costs in advertising campaigns.

Recently, we generally have meetings via the Internet. In this situation, we use background display to improve our impression of other members of the meetings. To improve the users' voice via the Internet, this study proposes an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) that adjusts the voice filter based on real-time pronunciations while keeping user's personality. The concrete system was constructed by employing a Genetic Algorithm and Koigoe, a software voice filter. The listening experiments were conducted to investigate the efficiencies of the proposed IEC from perspectives of increasing the fitness values and keeping the speaker's personality. The results showed that the proposed IEC has enough possibility to find a good parameter set of the voice filter;however, we need to improve its performance because the obtained best filter did not overcome the impression of the original voice without any filter. Furthermore, the proposed IEC could be considered to keep the user's personality based on the result of the evaluation experiment.

We (1) propose a method for accelerating the convergence of interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) by incorporating multiple evaluation models of previous IEC users, (2) evaluate the method's performance according to the similarity metric of users' evaluation characteristics, and (3) investigate its practical usefulness by measuring users' evaluation characteristics for real-world applications on the metric. Although conventional IEC with a function learning the current IEC user's evaluation characteristics cannot use the evaluation characteristics until the model is learned, the proposed IEC uses models learned from previous users until the current user's behavior is learned. The model from a previous IEC user whose evaluation values are most similar to those of the current IEC user is selected and used instead of the current IEC user's model till the current user's model is leaned. The viability of this method is evaluated on similarity distance of evaluation characteristics with simulation, and the simulation results are compared with the real IEC user's evaluation characteristics for four different types of real applications. Through this evaluation, we obtain a rating method for predicting the effectiveness of the proposed acceleration method for different types of IEC applications.

We investigate an interactive evolutionary computation using multiple users' gaze information when users partially participate in each design evaluation. In the previous study, we confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed system from a viewpoint of real system operation. However, the fluctuation of the users during solution candidate evaluation was not considered. In the actual operation of the proposed system, users may change during the process due to user interchange. Therefore, in this study, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed system when varying the users participating in each evaluation for each generation. In the experiment, we employ two types of situations as assumed real environments. The first situation changes the number of users evaluating the designs at each generation. The second situation employs various users from the predefined population to evaluate the designs at each generation. The experimental results show that, despite the change in the number of users during the solution candidate evaluation, the proposed system can generate coordination to satisfy many users.

interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) is known as an efficient method to create media contents suited with a user. However, user's fatigue in consecutive evaluation task, especially for time-sequential media contents, remains as a problem. Many previous studies have tried to solve this problem from algorithmic improvements. From different point of view, IEC methods using physiological information have been proposed. By mixing conventional IEC and IEC using physiological information, this paper proposes IEC method that utilizes both of user's subjective evaluation and physiological information to obtain evaluation value for a solution candidate. As a concrete system, IEC utilizing user's subjective relaxation feeling and heartbeat interval for composing relaxation musical piece suited with the user was constructed. To investigate the efficacy of the proposed method, comparing experiment with conventional IEC as control was performed. Created representative musical pieces in both methods afforded same level of relaxation feeling. The proposed method was effective for reducing a load in subjective selection, however, it increased fatigue by restricting body movement.

Design is a complicated and sophisticated process with numerous existing theories trying to describe it. To verify theories and quantitatively describe the design process, design experiment, and data analysis are crucial and inevitable. However, applying data analysis in the design experiment is tricky and design data is not fully utilized in many aspects. To explore the potential of design experiment data, this paper introduces data-driven research based on an interior design experiment, aiming to reveal the category and process of design by conducting data analysis, visualization, and recommendation. We introduce an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) design experiment that deals with a simplified interior design task and has already been tested on 230 subjects. Using the data gathered during the experiment, we conduct data analysis and visualization involving methods including Holistic color interval and K-means clustering to show categories and processes in design. Additionally, we train a content-based recommendation system with experiment data to capture user preference and make the IEC system more efficient and intelligent. The analysis and visualization show clear design categories and capture an evident trend towards the final design outcome. The application of the recommendation system brings a prominent improvement to the IEC system. This research shows the great potential of the various data-driven methods in design research.

A method based on interactive evolutionary computation and fuzzy logic for increasing the effectiveness of advertising campaigns

Optimization of advertising texts is aimed at increasing the number of users who take notice of the ad. The work presented in this paper proposes a method to optimize advertising texts through interactive evolutionary computation and fuzzy logic. This is done by utilizing user preferences for word combinations to build a fitness function. After several generations, the interactive evolutionary computation algorithm should produce a version of the advertising text that exhibits an increase in efficacy (as judged by the subjective evaluation function used for its evolution). To demonstrate the efficacy of the evolved texts, they are compared against word combinations chosen by experts in marketing and related fields. Recognition, recall, and persuasion tests were performed to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method. The obtained results show that interactive evolutionary computation can be used to increase the efficacy of an advertising text. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
