In this paper, we show that it is possible to use electroencephalography (EEG) and multi-brain computing with two humans to guide an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) system. We show that combining neural activity across two brains increases accuracy to guide evolutionary search more effectively. The IGA system involves a simple task of evolving a polygon shape to approximate the shape of a target polygon. Two candidates visually inspected the evolved polygons and mentally ranked them (independently from each other) from 1-10 based on their similarity to the target polygon. In parallel, the IGA system evaluated the fitness of evolved polygons using a standard fitness function. The IGA system was run for a few generations, before evolution was paused and EEG signals were collected from the two candidates. The collected EEG signals were used to train a regression model that received unseen EEG as input and mapped this into fitness values. The trained model was then used to guide the IGA solely by using the EEG signals. Off-line experimental results showed that it was possible to build better regression models that are trained using two EEG signals to capture participants evaluation of fitness. This paper demonstrates the possibility of a new domain of applications for interactive evolution where standard fitness calculations can be replaced with multiple EEG signals for guiding an optimisation process.

A consultation and simulation system for product color planning based on interactive genetic algorithms

In the early stage of a design process, it is important to create numerous and varied possible color plans for the target consumer group. These color plans help individual designers quickly find a few good color design schemes and give the design team ideas for brainstorming. The color plan of a product consists of the color combinations of its components and decorative patterns, which strongly influence the feelings of customers and thus their desire to purchase. However, very few studies have discussed these issues. In this study, a consultation and simulation system for product color planning that helps designers obtain the optimal color planning for components and decorative patterns of a product is proposed. This system includes two parts: one uses the interactive genetic algorithm to establish a creative evolutionary system that can interact with a designer to explore novel design schemes;the other extends the boundary extract algorithm to establish a color simulation system that can apply colors to the areas of product components and decorative patterns for color simulation. In this paper, the authors propose the user evaluation support methods for IGA (interactive genetic algorithm)-based 3D room layout generation. Although IGA is useful for applying the user preferences to the solution, IGA-based systems force users to evaluate a lot of individuals, causing the fatigue of operators. Therefore, we adopted the following methods in order to cope with the problem: (a) Prediction of user preferences with a conjoint analysis. (b) Individuals clustering with a self-organizing map. To make a 3D scene such as a furniture layout, the IGA-based 3D room layout system is very helpful because it requires easy 3D graphics and manipulation only. The authors have been developing a web-based system that optimizes 3D room layouts based on user preferences. Finally, we tested the usefulness of our system with the demonstration, and had positive outcomes.

This study presents a rapid design method of product modeling and structure condition selecting based on interactive genetic algorithm and 3D printing technology, which give a design pattern to satisfy the function needs. Aiming to products' shape and structure as the core, we used functional matrix to digitize and describe its demands as well as unify expressing the functional gene. Through 3D printing technology, we dematerialized the design and screened the products which meets the physical and feature requirements. Thus we established a genetic model for the evolution of the design and realization the design method by a tie clasp styling and innovative design.

One of the problems with human-robot interaction is how to design robot's appearances. It is said that robot's appearances can affect the emotions of people who communicate with the robot. The "uncanny valley" proposed by Mori is a famous phenomenon with regard to robot's appearances. It is necessary to avoid the "uncanny valley" when designing a robot. We propose adopting the concept of "moe" (a Japanese slang word expressing feelings such as goodwill, love, and excitement to the characters in comics or animated cartoons) as a design element to design a robot that most people will be acceptable. "Moe" is an ambiguous concept, and utilizing it for designing robot's appearances is not a simple task. Accordingly, a 3D design system for investigating and clarifying the meaning of "moe" was built. The system is based on an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). The system was used in experiments to compare "moe" with the English words "prettiness" and "coolness". In particular, the possibility that there is a difference between appearances of robots designed on the basis of whether people understand "moe" or not was investigated. In this paper, it appears that using "moe" and using "prettiness" as concepts for robot's appearances are equivalent under the condition that the robot's appearances was primitive.

Evolutionary and interactive sketching tool for innovative car shape design

So as to create innovative car silhouettes, we propose in this paper a model based on an interactive genetic algorithm using an encoding of a design solution by a Fourier analysis approach. This model permits the designer to browse through generations of car profiles from an initial population of existing silhouettes. By qualitatively assessing each individual, the designer converges towards solutions complying with his/her requirements and preferences, possibly creating novelty and generating surprise. We describe here tests for assessing the efficiency of this innovative design platform. These tests are mainly based on a similarity index, a similarity measure being the perceived distance between two cars silhouettes. The results highlight a good convergence toward a satisfactory solution. In addition, this design process turns out to be very flexible because of the local and intuitive modifications allowed on a given individual solution at any moment of the design process.

These days, customer not only selects a yukata from marketed yukata, but she also orders a custom-made yukata. When customer orders a yukata, it is necessary to show her favorite yukata to a designer. But if she has ambiguous image for her favorite yukata, it is bard to show her favorite design. We propose a yukata design system using an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). The proposed system is for designing a yukata to suit user's taste. From the assessment experiment of the system it was found that the proposed system proved to be effective in the designing of a yukata. In addition, we proposed additional functions that allow obi color mutation partially in search for the solution. And further experiments were carried out for the verification. The results indicated the effectiveness of the additional functions.

We present IGAP, a peer to peer interactive genetic algorithm which reflects the real world methodology followed in team design. We apply our methodology to floorplanning. Through collaboration users are able to visualize designs done by peers on the network, while using case injection to allow them to bias their populations and the fitness function to adapt to subjective preferences.

Using evolutionary design to interactively sketch car silhouettes and stimulate designer's creativity

An interactive genetic algorithm is proposed to progressively sketch the desired side-view of a car profile. It adopts a Fourier decomposition of a 2D profile as the genotype, and proposes a cross-over mechanism. In addition, a formula function of two genes' discrepancies is fitted to the perceived dissimilarity between two car profiles. This similarity index is intensively used, throughout a series of user tests, to highlight the added value of the IGA compared to a systematic car shape exploration, to prove its ability to create superior satisfactory designs and to stimulate designer's creativity. These tests have involved six designers with a design goal defined by a semantic attribute. The results reveal that if "friendly" is diversely interpreted in terms of car shapes, "sportive" denotes a very conventional representation which may be a limitation for shape renewal. We present an implementation of a framework for creative design based on collaborative interactive genetic algorithms. The hypothesis is that creative designs can be produced if the design search space can be continuously expanded not just by modifying the values of variables but also by adding new ones. The framework presented herein transforms well-formed 3D models by evolving vertex programs, and allows designers to collaborate with peers by injecting solutions from their peers into their own populations. 3D models were created individually and collaboratively, and an evaluation of the individually versus collaboratively evolved 3D models showed that the majority of the evaluation participants rated the collaboratively evolved models as more creative.
