Nowadays, wireless communications at frequencies of gigahertz have an increasing demand due to the ever-increasing number of electronic devices that uses this type of communication. They are implemented by Radio Frequency (RF) circuits. However, the design of RF circuits is difficult, time-consuming and based on designer knowledge and experience. This work proposes an interactive evolutionary approach using the genetic algorithm, which is implemented in the in-house iMTGSPICE optimization tool, to perform the optimization process of a robust (corner and Monte Carlo analyses) Ultra Low-Power Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) dedicated to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), which is implemented in a 130 nm Bulk CMOS technology. We performed two experimental studies to optimize the LNA. The first one used the interactive approach of iMTGSPICE, which was monitored and assisted by a beginner designer during the optimization process. The second one used the conventional approach of iMTGSPICE (non-interactive), which was not assisted by a designer during the optimization process. The obtained results demonstrated that the interactive approach of iMTGSPICE performed the optimization process of the robust LNA around 94% faster (in approximately 20 minutes only) than the non-interactive evolutionary approach (in approximately 6 hours).

The unequal area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) has been addressed by many approaches. Most of them only take quantitative aspects into consideration. In this paper, we will solve UA-FLP using a novel hybrid methodology that joins interactive evolutionary optimization and multi-criteria decision making. I particular, a combination of an interactive genetic algorithm and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), is proposed. By means of this new approach, it is possible to consider both quantitative and qualitative (using the expert knowledge) criteria in order to reach an acceptable design. Our approach allows the decision maker (DM) to interact with the algorithm, guiding the search process and ranking the criteria that are more relevant in each design solution. In this way, the algorithm is adjusted to the DM's preferences through his/her subjective evaluations of the representative solutions obtained by a clustering method, and also, to the quantitative criteria. A interesting real-world data set is analysed to empirically probe the robustness of this model. Relevant results are obtained, and interesting conclusions are drawn from the application of this novel intelligent framework.

This project involved the use of an interactive genetic algorithm (iGA) with an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based fitness function to create paintings in the style of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter who used geometric elements in his later paintings. Primary data for the prototype was gathered by analysis of twenty-seven existing Mondrian paintings. An EEG gaming headset was used to read EEG signals, which were transmitted by Bluetooth to an Arduino running an iGA. These values were used as the iGA fitness function. The data was sent to a PC running Processing to display the artwork. The resultant displayed artwork evolves to favour higher attention and meditation levels, which are considered to represent greater mindfulness. The process ends when the observer identifies a piece of art they would like to keep. However, convergence of the algorithm is difficult to test as many parameters can affect the process. A number of issues arising from the research are discussed and further work is proposed.

This paper describes a pioneering design and optimization methodology that provides a remarkable die area reduction of robust analog Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) Integrated Circuits (ICs) by using a computational tool based on artificial intelligence (iMTGSPICE) and the Diamond layout style for MOSFETs. The validation of this innovative optimization strategy for analog CMOS ICs was made for an Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTA) by using 180 nm CMOS ICs technology. The main finding of this work reports a remarkable reduction of the total die area of a robust OTA around 30%, regarding the use of Diamond MOSFETs with alfa angles of 45 degrees when compared to the one implemented with standard rectangular MOSFETs.

We can now access to large music databases. However, it is not easy to find favorite music pieces that the user does not know yet from those databases. Therefore, the demand for the music recommendation system is increasing. The purpose of this study is to construct a system to recommend music pieces that suit each user's preferences from their unknown music pieces. In the proposed method of this study, first, we create a melody for each user using interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). Next, we recommend music piece that contains parts similar to the created melody using the music recommendation system. In the recommendation, relative key is used. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted 2 listening experiments with 10 subjects. In the melody creation experiment, the average subjective fitness gradually increased, and significant differences between the first generation and some generations including the final generation was observed. On the other hand, in the music recommendation experiment, effectiveness could not be confirmed. The failure of the recommendation might be caused from shortage of the size of the music database: it contains only 100 pieces. Therefore, the music piece which was sufficiently similar to the created melody could not be recommended. From the above results, expansion of the music database is discussed as a future task.

This paper explores the use of an interactive genetic algorithm for creating a piece of visual art intended to assist in promoting the state of mindfulness. This is determined by a Bluetooth gaming electroencephalography (EEG) headset as the fitness function. The visual display consisted of an infinity mirror with over two hundred Neopixels with fade times and colour of zones controlled by two Arduinos running the software. Whilst we have observed some convergence of solutions, the results and user observations raised some interesting questions about how this strategy might be improved.

In this paper, we propose an office layout support system for polygonal space using interactive genetic algorithm. The proposed system has two phases;(1) generation of room arrangement plans and (2) generation of layout plans for workspace. In the proposed system, layout plans can be generated not only for a workspace whose shape is square but also for a workspace whose shape is polygonal. In this system, some conditions on rooms and furniture are given by a user, some room arrangement plans which satisfy the conditions are generated by interactive genetic algorithm. After one of the generated room arrangement plans is selected by a user, and then some layout plans for workspace which satisfy the conditions are generated by interactive genetic algorithm. We carried out a series of computer experiments and confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed system.

A method for product personalized design based on prospect theory improved with interval reference

How to rapidly and accurately response to customers' demands is the key in product personalized design, which could be perfectly achieved by interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) emphasizing on collaborative interaction and user participation through human computer interaction. However IGA widely adopted now neglects the impact of decision makers' psychological changes on decision-making behaviors. It's hard to capture customers' demands and grasp their preferences, generating slow convergence speed and heavy user fatigue. Thus an interactive genetic algorithm based on prospect theory improved with interval reference (IGA-PTIR) is proposed in the paper. In IGA-PTIR, an evolutionary individual's fitness value is represented by interval prospect value of prospect theory improved with interval reference instead of single reference in order to correct individual fitness deviation caused by ambiguity and uncertainty of user cognition. An interval number sorting strategy based on dominance degree is then adopted to rank individuals, which makes it possible to perform subsequent operations of selection, crossover and mutation. In the paper, IGA-PTIR is applied into automobile wheel hub design system and compared with traditional interactive genetic algorithms (TIGA). Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can increase convergence speed, ease user fatigue, and improve search performance to a large extent.

Endowing virtual agents with desired personality impression is one of the most important considerations when designers create agents. Color appearance of agents has been suggested to be able to convey personality impression but how to design the right color appearance to obtain the desired personality impression is still a challenge to unexperienced designers, since they have little information on how colors evoke personality impression;moreover, the design become more difficult when multiple design goals need to be considered simultaneously. To respond to the challenge, we propose an automated method for creating color appearance of agents using a multi-objective interactive genetic algorithm. The method can automatically generate the desired color appearance that can convey desired personality impression, has harmonious color combinations, and express designers' preference. The experimental results show that our method can lower the barrier for designers and speed up the design process.

Traditional user interface (UI) optimization design mainly depends on the designer's manual adjustment, however it is a complex and inefficient process, and always dose not match the end users' preference. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a new method that combines user's eye movement and electroencephalography (EEG) data to drive interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) and optimize UI design solutions automatically. We apply this method to optimize the UI of music player (panel of the software), and the pilot study proves that the method can evolve towards the user's preference and finally obtain the optimized aesthetic design solution that meets the user's preference.
